Start with a film-oriented preset, ideally Filmmaker Mode. Then check three things against your room and the shows you watch: local dimming, motion processing and perceived brightness. There is no single slider recipe that fits every Hisense Mini-LED, because menus, picture-mode names and defaults change by model, region and TV software. This guide gives you a sequence that works across sets, and it marks where a number applies to one tested model only.
Before you touch a setting: identify your exact TV
Guides online often disagree because they cover different models. A tip written for a U7N may not match a VIDAA-based set sold elsewhere. Note three details first:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The full model code, from the label on the TV or its About/System information screen.
- Your country or region, since menu wording and available options can differ by market.
- The operating system and software version. Hisense sells sets on different platforms, including VIDAA.
With those details, find the manual for your exact model. A VIDAA U9 manual, for example, documents local dimming and related picture controls for that model and platform, but its wording should not be assumed to match other sets.

For movies and TV shows, choose Filmmaker Mode if your set offers it. If not, look for a preset named Movie, Cinema or Theater. Hisense describes the mode on its U7N product page this way: “Filmmaker Mode adjusts your video to its original settings to see and hear details like the sound, aspect ratio, color, frame rate, and more as it was originally envisioned for the most authentic display.” That is a vendor statement, not an independent test. RTINGS also used Filmmaker Mode in its U7N HDR settings.

Compare it with the default mode using a scene you know well, in the room where you normally watch. Film-oriented presets can look dimmer or warmer than the vivid defaults. That is often the point, but you should judge it yourself. Brighter, more processed modes can look punchier, and some viewers prefer that in a bright room.
Step 2: Confirm which mode is actually active
Play the content you want to tune before you change anything. HDR and other signal types can trigger their own picture mode or their own set of adjustments, and model-specific guides split their advice by SDR, HDR, Dolby Vision and gaming. A change made while watching SDR may not carry over to an HDR stream, and a setting on one HDMI input may not apply to another. Check the active mode each time you test a new kind of content.

Step 3: Decide on local dimming
Local dimming dims or brightens zones of the backlight to deepen blacks and keep bright highlights. The trade-off is visible transitions: some viewers notice zones brightening or fading around subtitles, logos or bright objects on dark backgrounds.

- If transitions bother you: lower the setting one step and watch the same dark scene again.
- If blacks look grey in a dark room: try a higher level and check whether the trade-off is acceptable.
Option names and the number of levels differ between sets, so use your manual to confirm what each level does.

Step 4: Tame motion processing
Motion smoothing (often labelled motion enhancement, motion interpolation or a similar name) inserts extra frames. It can make panning shots look smoother, but it also changes the cadence of films and drama, which many viewers find artificial. Hisense’s German-language setup advice recommends reducing automatic processing for a more natural picture, and it advises starting from a film-oriented preset, reducing sharpness and turning down automatic contrast and noise filters. That is regional brand guidance, not a numerical calibration.
A fair way to decide:
- Pause on a film scene with a slow camera pan.
- Switch motion processing between off and a low level.
- Watch for a few minutes each, then repeat with live sport.
If you like the film look, turn it off or keep it low. If sports look juddery, a mild level for that content only is reasonable.

Step 5: Adjust brightness for your room
Brightness settings are where preference and accuracy part ways. A dark room usually suits a lower backlight level, while a sunlit room often needs more. The sources reviewed do not establish one brightness number for all Hisense Mini-LED TVs, so adjust to comfort: whites should not hurt your eyes at night, and shadow detail should stay visible in the daytime. Treat this as a viewing-comfort choice, not a measured calibration.
Step 6: Set up games separately
If you game, use your set’s own game mode and check your manual for its options. Do not copy movie-mode choices into it, because the evidence for carrying one over to the other is model-specific. Test with a game you know, and adjust local dimming and motion processing for it on their own terms.

Do you need calibration equipment?
No. The steps above need only your eyes and familiar content. Measurement tools matter only if you want a measured calibration, and they require your exact model, the signal type and sometimes professional-grade guidance. A model-specific guide such as RTINGS’ U7N settings page is a reasonable middle route, as long as it matches your model and you treat its numbers as that test’s recommendations.
