Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If your website screenshots change between runs, first check whether the browser and operating system changed; then make the page’s data, readiness condition, assets, and animation state deterministic. A screenshot is the rendered result of both your application and its capture environment, so updating a baseline without identifying the cause can hide a real regression.
Why do website screenshots look different every time?
A screenshot can vary even when you did not intentionally change the application. Playwright identifies the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as possible sources of rendering differences. Dynamic page content, incomplete loads, and animation can also change what appears at capture time.

For visual comparisons, keep the rendering environment fixed and make the page state repeatable. Playwright’s visual comparisons guidance and best practices recommend stable environments and controlled responses. Cypress likewise recommends fixtures and network stubbing in its visual testing guidance.
How to diagnose and fix flaky screenshots
1. Record and stabilize the capture environment
For each run, record the browser and version, operating system or container image, headed or headless mode, viewport, device scale setting, and material browser settings. Keep the operating system and browser version the same when comparing screenshots. If a capture passes locally but fails in CI, compare those details before changing a baseline.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Pinning the environment does not eliminate application-state problems, but it narrows the cause. Treat browser upgrades and operating-system image changes as deliberate changes to the visual-test environment, not as invisible implementation details.
2. Make the page data repeatable
Use fixed fixtures for test data and stub or otherwise control responses the page needs. Uncontrolled backend data, timestamps, rotating promotions, and third-party widgets can produce genuine pixel differences even when the interface code has not changed. Cypress recommends fixtures and network stubbing; Playwright recommends controlling required responses through its Network API.

Control only the responses relevant to the test. If the purpose is to test a live integration, keep that as a separate test with expectations suited to changing external data rather than making a visual baseline depend on an unpredictable response.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Wait for a meaningful ready state and complete assets
Capture after the application signals that the relevant view is ready—not merely after navigation begins or a guessed number of milliseconds. Wait for the component or application state that matters to the assertion, then verify that required fonts, stylesheets, images, and other assets have loaded.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Percy’s troubleshooting guidance identifies network-idle timeouts, missing fonts or CSS, and unloaded lazy assets as issues to investigate. If content loads on scroll, scroll through the relevant page before capture so lazy-loaded content has an opportunity to load. Inspect failed and timed-out requests rather than assuming a longer sleep will fix them.
Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() captures repeatedly until two consecutive screenshots match, then compares the last one with the expectation. This can help with short-lived image instability, but it does not make external data deterministic or fix a different browser environment or missing assets.

- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
4. Handle animation and other changing regions intentionally
Animation makes the capture moment matter. Percy documents that it disables animation by default. Cypress’s waitForAnimations and animationDistanceThreshold settings apply to action commands; do not assume they stabilize screenshot capture. Check the screenshot tool’s capture-specific behavior. Where suitable, use its documented screenshot controls or a test-only style adjustment to freeze motion. Keep a separate test for animation behavior if the animation itself is what you need to verify.

Mask or exclude a region only if it is genuinely outside the test’s purpose; masking meaningful content or layout can conceal a regression.
5. Classify the difference before updating a baseline
When a comparison fails, review the run context, fixtures and responses, failed requests, font and stylesheet availability, lazy-loaded content, and animation state. If the same difference reproduces with a pinned environment, controlled data, and complete assets, investigate it as a likely product change. Accept a new baseline only after reviewing the diff and confirming that the changed appearance is intended.

Common troubleshooting cases
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Local screenshots pass but CI differs | Different browser version, operating system, headless mode, viewport, or device scale | Compare recorded capture metadata and align the local and CI rendering environment before reviewing the baseline. |
| Text wraps differently or icons are missing | Font or stylesheet did not load, or the asset differs between runs | Inspect requests and asset availability; wait for the required fonts and styles before capture. |
| Only page content or numbers change | Uncontrolled API data, timestamps, or third-party content | Use fixed fixtures or controlled responses for the visual test. |
| Lower sections are blank or incomplete | Lazy-loaded content was not requested before capture | Scroll the relevant content into view and verify the resulting asset requests complete. |
| Differences appear sporadically around moving elements | Animation or changing content captured at different moments | Use documented capture-specific animation handling or deterministic content; do not rely on action-command animation settings alone. |
| Waiting longer does not make the test reliable | A blind delay is standing in for a missing readiness condition or failed request | Wait for the application’s real ready signal and inspect timeouts and asset failures instead. |
Capture a screenshot without setting up a browser
For local visual regression tests, controlling the browser and test data gives you the most direct way to diagnose and reproduce differences. For a one-off capture or a workflow that does not need a locally managed browser, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. Its capture options include waits, custom headers and cookies, user agents, viewport and device presets, and full-page capture; these can help match a capture to your use case, but they do not replace deterministic fixtures in a visual regression test.
Or skip the browser setup
One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, save a WebP screenshot of a page with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and output options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with supported consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright automatically make every screenshot deterministic?
No. Its repeated captures can filter short-lived image instability, but you still need a stable rendering environment, repeatable data, and loaded assets.
Should I mask every part of the page that changes?
No. Mask only regions intentionally outside the test’s purpose; otherwise you can hide meaningful content or layout regressions.
