Why Website Screenshots Differ Between Headless and Headed Chrome

Different Chrome builds, screen properties, page states, and graphics setups can produce different screenshots. Here’s how to compare headless and headed captures fairly.

Headless and headed Chrome screenshots can differ when the two runs use different Chrome builds or headless implementations, screen settings, or capture timing. Start by matching the browser version, viewport, device scale factor, orientation, and page state; check graphics settings if the page relies on WebGL, WebGPU, canvas, or compositing. A remaining difference is not automatically a browser bug: there is no single documented cause that explains every mismatch.

What “headless” means matters

Current headless Chrome runs Chrome itself without a visible browser window. Chrome also documents a separate, older chrome-headless-shell binary. The shell is described as lighter, while current headless mode is described as more authentic for high-accuracy end-to-end testing. Those implementations are not interchangeable assumptions: record which one produced each screenshot and compare like with like. Chrome’s headless documentation explains the distinction.

Match the visual environment first

A screenshot captures the output of a particular browser and screen configuration. Differences in those inputs can alter what fits in the image or how page content is rendered.

Chrome version and implementation

Record the exact Chrome version for both runs, and note whether headless mode uses current Chrome or the old headless shell. Keep the version and implementation the same before attributing a difference to headed versus headless rendering.

Viewport, scale factor, and orientation

Use identical viewport dimensions and device scale factor. Match orientation and screen configuration where applicable. Chromium documents these as visual properties that affect output. Chrome 142 introduced documented virtual-screen configuration for headless, including screen size and scale factor; that availability statement applies to stable Chrome beginning with version 142. See Chrome’s headless documentation and Chrome’s Chrome 142 virtual-screen guidance.

For a command-line capture, Chrome documents --window-size with --screenshot:

chrome --headless --window-size=1440,900 --screenshot=https://example.com

Use the same dimensions in the headed run. A matching window size is not by itself proof that every screen-related property is identical, so also compare scale factor and orientation in the automation setup.

Page state and capture timing

JavaScript may change the page while it loads or after it becomes visible: fonts can swap, images can arrive, data can render, and animations or timers can advance. Capture each run at an equivalent point. Chrome’s command-line reference documents --timeout for capture timing and --virtual-time-budget for time-dependent code, but neither flag guarantees that an application’s own fonts, images, data, or UI are ready. Add page-specific readiness checks in the automation script when needed.

A reproducible comparison procedure

  1. Record browser details. Note the Chrome version and whether the headless run uses current --headless or chrome-headless-shell.
  2. Hold page inputs steady. Use the same URL, browser profile assumptions, page data, and application state for both captures.
  3. Set matching screen properties. Use identical viewport width and height, device scale factor, orientation, and screen configuration where applicable.
  4. Choose an explicit wait strategy. Set the same capture timeout or virtual-time budget where those flags apply, then add application-specific waits for required fonts, images, data, or UI state.
  5. Compare graphics settings if relevant. If the discrepancy concerns WebGL, WebGPU, canvas, or compositing, record GPU and graphics backend configuration and compare equivalent setups.
  6. Inspect the remaining delta. Only after the inputs above match should you treat the leftover difference as a likely rendering discrepancy; available Chrome guidance does not establish a universal cause or ranking for all screenshot differences.

When graphics settings are worth investigating

GPU configuration can matter for pages that depend on graphics APIs or GPU-backed rendering. Chrome’s guidance for a documented Linux WebGPU/WebGL setup says GPU is disabled by default there and lists settings to enable it. This is scoped guidance for that Linux configuration, not a general rule for every Chrome version, operating system, GPU, or ordinary webpage. See Chrome’s WebGPU troubleshooting guidance.

If the page is mostly text, images, and standard layout, first check version, headless implementation, dimensions, scale factor, and timing rather than assuming GPU settings are the explanation.
