Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhen a self-hosted Ghost blog will not accept an image, diagnose the upload as a request moving through four layers: the browser and Ghost Admin, the reverse proxy, the Ghost process, and the image-storage destination. Reproduce the failure with a small JPEG or PNG, note the HTTP status and exact error, then inspect the matching layer. A 413 points to request-size limits; a redirect loop points to forwarded-HTTPS handling; a Ghost 500 containing a write error usually points to permissions, disk access, or the configured storage adapter.

Record your Ghost version, deployment method (Ghost-CLI, Docker, or a custom installation), operating system, proxy, active storage adapter, endpoint, and the time of the failed attempt. Those details let you match one browser symptom to one server-side log entry instead of changing several settings at once.

Understand the path an image upload takes
Ghost Admin sends the image request to your public URL. If NGINX or another reverse proxy terminates TLS, that proxy receives the request first and may reject it before Ghost runs. A Ghost process then authenticates the request and passes the file to the configured storage layer. With the default local adapter, the file is written below the installation’s content path; with an external adapter, it is sent to a remote service.
Browser and Admin
The browser is the starting point, not necessarily the source of the failure. Open the browser’s developer tools and capture the failed request’s status, URL, and response text. Repeating the test with a very small JPEG or PNG separates a general upload failure from a size-dependent one.

Reverse proxy
NGINX can reject an oversized request, fail to create its temporary upload file, or send Ghost the wrong scheme information. A rejection at this layer never reaches Ghost’s application logs as a normal upload.
Ghost process
Ghost must be running under an account that can traverse the parent directories and write to the target location. Its configuration must also point to the storage adapter you believe is active.

Ghost’s default local-file-store writes uploaded images to the configured content path’s images directory. An S3, Cloudinary, Google Cloud Storage, Backblaze B2, BunnyCDN, or another supported adapter changes the destination and introduces credentials, network reachability, and adapter-maintenance requirements.
Start with a controlled failure and the logs
- Export or back up the publication before changing ownership, permissions, proxy settings, or storage configuration.
- In Ghost Admin, upload a small JPEG or PNG and note the exact time. Do not begin with the largest file that previously failed.
- Record the browser status and message, the request endpoint, Ghost version, deployment type, proxy, operating system, and active storage adapter.
- At that same timestamp, capture the relevant NGINX access and error entries and the Ghost log line. Ghost-CLI sites keep application logs in the installation’s
content/logsdirectory. - Classify the result before making a change. Apply one narrow fix, restart only the affected service, and repeat the same test.

A community report describes temporary-file permission errors and different responses for proxy write failures versus Ghost filesystem failures. Treat that report as an example of how the layers can differ, not as a rule that applies to every operating system or NGINX package.

client_max_body_size 50m;
Set the value in the server or location block that handles the Ghost site. If you intentionally allow larger images, replace 50m with a limit your server can handle and keep the setting consistent through every proxy or load-balancer hop. Raising a limit without accounting for memory, temporary-disk capacity, bandwidth, and request timeouts can turn one large upload into resource pressure for the whole publication.

Apply and reload the change
- Open the NGINX configuration for the affected Ghost virtual host, not an unrelated default site.
- Add or edit
client_max_body_sizein the applicableserverblock. Check included configuration files if more than one layer fronts the site. - Validate the configuration with your normal NGINX syntax test.
- Restart NGINX after saving:
sudo service nginx restart. - Retry the same file and compare the new access-log status with the earlier failure.
Prevent HTTPS redirect loops
When TLS terminates at NGINX, Ghost needs to know that the original request was HTTPS. Pass the forwarded scheme as HTTPS in the proxy configuration, using the equivalent of:
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto https;
An incorrect forwarded value can make Ghost redirect an already secure request back to HTTPS repeatedly. Confirm the header in the virtual host that actually receives public traffic; changing an unused configuration file will not affect the request.
Repair Ghost and filesystem permissions safely
Ghost-CLI creates a system user and group named ghost for the Ghost process. For a normal non-root Ghost-CLI installation, its documented defaults are mode 775 for directories and mode 664 for files. The process must be able to traverse every parent directory and write the image destination, not merely read the top-level content directory.
Find the effective path and account
The usual local image directory is /var/www/ghost/content/images, but the configured content path can differ. Confirm the production configuration and the service definition before changing anything. Inspect each parent directory and the target directory with tools such as namei -l and ls -ld; check which account owns the running Ghost process.

Do not recursively change ownership or permissions until you have a current backup and have identified the affected content path. A recursive command aimed at the wrong directory can damage unrelated sites or remove deliberately restricted permissions.
Use Ghost’s own repair mechanisms first
Ghost-CLI documents ghost doctor hooks for enforcing expected Linux permissions. Run the diagnostic from the correct Ghost installation and review what it proposes before accepting a repair. If you have confirmed that the installation’s content tree should belong to Ghost, the manual-backup guidance uses:
sudo chown -R ghost:ghost content
Run that command from the Ghost installation directory only after verifying the path and preserving your backup. Avoid setting everything to mode 777: it grants write access far beyond the Ghost service account and hides the real ownership problem.
Check disk and parent-directory access
- Verify that the filesystem containing
content/imageshas free space and inodes. - Confirm that each parent directory permits traversal by the Ghost account.
- Confirm that the target directory is writable by that account.
- Check whether a read-only mount, filesystem policy, or container bind mount blocks writes.
A permissions failure normally produces a Ghost-side error, whereas a request-size rejection is returned by the proxy before Ghost attempts a write. Use the timestamped logs to keep those cases separate.
Verify the configured storage adapter
Ghost’s configuration layer handles images uploaded from Admin, the API, and importer ZIP files. By default, Ghost stores uploaded images on the local filesystem. Production configuration can instead name an external adapter, so the directory you are inspecting may not be involved at all.

For local storage
- Read the active production configuration and identify the content path.
- Resolve that path on the host where Ghost actually runs.
- Check that the
imagesdirectory exists, is reachable through its parents, and is writable by the Ghost service account. - Confirm free space and verify that a newly uploaded test file remains after the request completes.
For external storage
- Confirm that the adapter named in production is installed and loaded by this Ghost version.
- Check access keys, bucket or account identifiers, region or endpoint settings, and any required public-delivery configuration.
- Verify network reachability from the Ghost host or container, including DNS and outbound firewall policy.
- Check the destination’s write policy and available quota.
External storage can improve durability and make multi-server deployments easier, but it adds credentials, network, provider-policy, and adapter-maintenance dependencies. A local adapter is simpler when one host owns the content and its backup process is reliable.

Ghost-CLI on a host
Use the installation’s real content path, the ghost service account, and the site-specific NGINX virtual host. After an ownership or Ghost-configuration repair, restart Ghost with ghost restart; after an NGINX edit, restart NGINX instead. Restarting the wrong service can make a correct fix appear ineffective.
Docker
Container paths do not automatically match Ghost-CLI paths. Identify the container’s active configuration and the volume mount that backs the content directory. Check permissions both inside the container and on the host-side mount. Changing ownership of /var/www/ghost/content/images on the host is meaningless if the container writes to a different mount or uses a different numeric user ID.
Inspect the proxy in front of the container separately. A 413 can be generated by host NGINX, an ingress controller, or another load balancer before the request reaches the Ghost container.
Custom process managers and multiple sites
With systemd, a process supervisor, or several Ghost sites, determine which service definition starts the failing site and which account it uses. Apply a filesystem change only to that site’s content tree. A proxy directive in a shared configuration can affect every virtual host, so prefer the narrowest block that serves the publication.
Best Value
Follow a safe repair and verification sequence
- Back up first. Archive the publication’s
images/,files/, andmedia/directories and retain a restorable copy of the database and configuration. - Reproduce with a small file. A successful small upload proves that the basic Admin-to-storage path works and focuses attention on size or resource limits for larger files.
- Match the status to a layer. Fix the effective proxy limit for a 413, forwarded-HTTPS handling for a loop, or service-account/storage access for a Ghost write error.
- Change one setting. Do not combine a proxy edit, recursive ownership change, and adapter migration in one attempt.
- Restart only the affected service. Use
sudo service nginx restartafter NGINX edits andghost restartafter Ghost configuration or ownership repairs. - Repeat the identical upload. Compare the new browser response and both server logs with the original timestamp.
- Verify persistence. Confirm that the image appears in the editor, its public URL retrieves the file, and the file is still present after opening a new browser session or restarting the relevant service.
The final checks are operational safeguards rather than a universal Ghost test script: they confirm that the request succeeded, the storage destination retained the object, and public delivery works independently of the original Admin session.
Troubleshoot by failure pattern
Every image fails, including a tiny JPEG
Start with the Ghost log and the configured content path. Check the running service account, parent-directory traversal, target-directory write access, free disk space, read-only mounts, and adapter credentials. If the log shows a proxy temporary-file error, inspect NGINX’s temporary directory and account instead of changing Ghost ownership.
Only large images fail
Inspect the effective client_max_body_size at every proxy layer and compare it with the file size. Check for a second ingress, CDN, or load balancer with its own request cap. Once the limit is raised, ensure temporary storage and request timeouts can accommodate the new maximum.
The upload spins or redirects indefinitely
Capture the request chain in the browser and inspect response headers. A scheme mismatch between TLS-terminating NGINX and Ghost commonly creates an HTTPS redirect loop; correct the forwarded-protocol setting in the active virtual host.
The editor shows the image, but the public URL fails
Separate upload from delivery. Confirm that the object exists in the local images directory or external destination, then inspect proxy routing, URL configuration, and external-storage public access. A successful write does not prove that the public path can retrieve the object.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The fix works until a restart
Look for an edit made in a temporary or unused configuration file, a container volume that is not persistent, or an ownership change that was applied to the wrong path. Recheck the active service definition and production configuration after restarting.
Quick Recap
Prevent repeat upload failures
- Keep a documented map of the public proxy, Ghost service, content path, container mounts, and active storage adapter.
- Set a deliberate upload ceiling rather than raising the proxy limit indefinitely. Align it with disk, memory, temporary-file, timeout, and backup capacity.
- Keep Ghost-CLI’s expected ownership and modes, and use its diagnostic hooks instead of blanket permission changes.
- Back up
images/,files/, andmedia/before maintenance and test that the archive can be restored. - Retain NGINX and Ghost logs long enough to correlate a browser failure with the server event.
- For external storage, document credentials, endpoint settings, quotas, network requirements, and the adapter version alongside the Ghost configuration.
- After upgrades, verify one small upload, one representative large upload, public retrieval, and persistence after a service restart.
