It is normally not an npm-designed error. Confirm that diagnosis in the kernel or cgroup logs, then recover in order: create headroom, add permitted swap, set a sensible Node heap limit, reduce build pressure, and finally move the build or resize the server if its hard memory ceiling is too low.

What a bare Killed message means
A shell prints Killed when the process it was waiting for disappears after receiving SIGKILL. Linux uses an out-of-memory (OOM) killer when it cannot satisfy memory allocations. On a VPS using cgroup v2, an OOM inside a cgroup can be confined to that cgroup instead of taking down the whole host. The kernel chooses a task to terminate using signals such as its oom_score and oom_score_adj; the selected task may be Node, npm, a build tool, or another process competing for the same limit.

npm can be the visible victim even when the largest allocation comes from a child process. Installation and build work can overlap dependency resolution, archive extraction, lifecycle scripts, compilers, bundlers, and native-module builds. Existing services on a small VPS consume part of the same budget, so a command that succeeds on a workstation can cross the server’s peak-memory limit.
This is different from a V8-managed heap failure. A V8 failure normally prints a diagnostic beginning with FATAL ERROR: ... JavaScript heap out of memory. A plain Killed accompanied by an OOM record points to an OS or cgroup decision. Node’s JavaScript heap limit is only one part of a process’s memory footprint: the operating system still needs space for native allocations, npm itself, child processes, shared libraries, and every other service.

Prove the cause before changing flags
Do the checks below immediately after reproducing the failure. A log entry naming Node or npm, or a rising cgroup OOM counter, is stronger evidence than guessing from the command alone.
1. Record the software and server limits
Capture the versions and the distribution from the same account and environment that runs the failing command:
node -v
npm -v
cat /etc/os-release
free -h
swapon --show
Also check the VPS control panel or container documentation for a memory quota. A machine can show physical RAM while a service, container, or user slice has a smaller cgroup limit. npm’s installation guidance recommends checking Node and npm versions and using a supported installation method; an obsolete runtime is worth correcting, but a version update cannot create memory that the VPS does not have.
2. Watch the peak, not just the idle total
Run the command while observing memory in another session:
watch -n 1 free -h
top
If installed, htop makes it easier to see several Node and compiler processes at once. Look for available memory collapsing, swap filling, or a short-lived child process that coincides with termination. Idle usage after npm exits is not useful evidence; the relevant value is the highest resident set (RSS) reached during the failing phase.
Node can report its own view of the process:
node -e 'console.log(process.memoryUsage()); console.log(process.constrainedMemory ? process.constrainedMemory() : undefined)'
process.memoryUsage() reports RSS and other memory fields. In Node versions that support it, process.constrainedMemory() reports a detected limit when one is imposed. Treat that limit as a ceiling signal, not as a promise that the entire value is available to JavaScript; native code and the operating system still require headroom.

sudo dmesg -T | grep -i -E 'out of memory|killed process|oom'
sudo journalctl -k -b
If npm runs under a systemd service, inspect that unit as well:
sudo journalctl -u your-service -b
An OOM record that names node or npm, reports an out-of-memory condition, or identifies a killed process confirms an OS-level kill. Some managed VPS products restrict access to dmesg; in that case, use the provider’s event log and the service journal.
4. Check cgroup v2 counters
When the process is inside a cgroup, read the memory.events file for that cgroup:
cat /sys/fs/cgroup/memory.events
The counters include oom and oom_kill. An increment in oom_kill after the npm run is direct evidence that the cgroup killed a task. If your host has free RAM but this counter rises, the problem is probably a service or container quota rather than host-wide exhaustion. The exact cgroup path can be seen with:
cat /proc/$$/cgroup
On systems with a delegated hierarchy, read memory.events in the corresponding directory instead of assuming the root path above.
5. Separate heap exhaustion from an external SIGKILL
- V8 heap failure: Node prints a
FATAL ERRORmessage referring to JavaScript heap space or the old generation. The remedy may involve changing the V8 limit or reducing JavaScript allocation. - OS or cgroup kill: the shell prints only
Killed, and kernel or cgroup evidence records an OOM kill. Changing a JavaScript flag without fixing the surrounding memory pressure will not solve the underlying limit. - No memory evidence: check the service journal, provider events, and the command’s wrapper. A supervisor can send SIGKILL for a timeout or administrative action, and those cases require a different fix.
Fix the failure in the least disruptive order
1. Free memory and avoid overlapping peaks
Stop services that are not needed during installation or a build, and schedule the build when databases, backup jobs, and other compilers are quiet. Do not run an npm build, a database migration, and a package compilation concurrently on a 1 GB host unless you have measured enough headroom for all of them.
Inspect processes before stopping anything:
ps aux --sort=-%mem | head -n 15
Then stop only workloads you understand, using their normal service manager commands. npm’s troubleshooting guidance notes that practical concurrency can expose resource races and related errors; reducing simultaneous work is safer than repeatedly retrying the same peak.

Install from a committed lockfile where possible. npm ci performs a clean, lockfile-based installation and avoids changing dependency resolution during deployment:
npm ci
For a runtime image that does not need development tooling, omit development dependencies after confirming that the application does not require them:
npm ci --omit=dev
Omitting packages reduces installation work and disk use, but it does not make a development build possible under a hard memory cap. Build tools must still be present wherever the build itself runs.
2. Add swap when the VPS permits it
Swap can absorb a short allocation spike when physical RAM is momentarily full. It is storage-backed and slower than RAM, so a build may become noticeably slower while swapping. It also cannot defeat a provider-enforced cgroup limit: if the cgroup’s memory ceiling is reached, the kernel can kill a process even when the host has unused swap or RAM.
For a traditional Linux VPS where you have root access, a swap file can be created as follows. Replace the example size with a value your provider allows:
sudo fallocate -l 1G /swapfile
sudo chmod 600 /swapfile
sudo mkswap /swapfile
sudo swapon /swapfile
swapon --show
free -h
To make the file available after reboot, add one entry to /etc/fstab:
echo '/swapfile none swap sw 0 0' | sudo tee -a /etc/fstab
Use the VPS provider’s documented method if it supplies managed swap or disallows local swap files. Verify with swapon --show after configuration and again after a reboot. Linux’s vm.swappiness setting influences how readily the kernel moves pages to swap, but changing it is a tuning choice, not a substitute for adequate memory.

3. Cap the Node heap only when the evidence supports it
Node exposes V8’s old-generation limit through --max-old-space-size=SIZE, where SIZE is in megabytes. For a one-off build, set it through NODE_OPTIONS:
export NODE_OPTIONS=--max-old-space-size=512
npm run build
The 512 MB value is an example for a very small host, not a universal setting. Choose it from observed peak usage and leave room for npm, native modules, child processes, the kernel, and other services. A cap set below the build’s real JavaScript requirement simply changes an external kill into a V8 heap error.
Node’s command-line documentation gives this rule of thumb: “On a machine with 2 GiB of memory, consider setting this to 1536 (1.5 GiB) to leave some memory for other uses and avoid swapping.” That figure describes a 2 GiB machine and a particular allocation decision; it is not a recommendation to assign all available memory to Node, nor does it account for a database or other resident services.
Keep the setting local to the build unless you have validated it for every Node process. A global shell profile or service environment can unintentionally constrain unrelated commands.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Reduce dependency and build pressure
- Commit and validate
package-lock.json, then usenpm ciin deployment so dependency versions and the resolution graph are reproducible. - Separate dependency installation from the runtime image. Copy only the built artifact and production dependencies to the small VPS when your application supports that deployment model.
- Move compilation, bundling, and native-module builds to continuous integration or a temporary larger machine. Upload the resulting artifact rather than making the production server perform the peak-memory phase.
- Remove unnecessary build plugins and packages after measuring their effect; do not delete a dependency that the application requires at runtime.
These changes lower the peak or move it elsewhere. They do not override a provider’s hard memory limit, and a build performed on another machine must still target the production platform’s operating system and CPU requirements.
5. Resize the VPS or use a temporary builder
If kernel logs or memory.events show a hard cgroup limit, and the workload still exceeds that limit after concurrency and dependency changes, a larger instance is the durable fix. A temporary high-memory builder can keep the always-on production VPS small while making builds predictable. Resizing costs more than a heap flag or local swap, but it removes the repeated trial-and-error around an insufficient peak budget.
Do not judge the required size from the server’s idle memory. Size for the maximum simultaneous workload: npm, every child process, resident services, filesystem cache, and a safety margin.
Best Value
How the remedies differ
| Remedy | Effect on peak memory | Swap and speed | Reproducibility | Cost and scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stop unused services and serialize jobs | Removes competing consumers and overlapping peaks | Works with or without swap; usually avoids swap-related slowdown | Depends on the deployment process | Little direct cost; affects host-wide scheduling |
| Swap | Absorbs short spikes when the host can use it | Slower than RAM; unavailable when the provider forbids it | Persistent after configuration, but behavior depends on workload | Inexpensive; cannot bypass a cgroup or provider ceiling |
| Node heap cap | Limits V8 old-generation growth and leaves planned headroom | Does not require swap; too-low values make V8 fail | Repeatable when set in the build environment | Cheap; applies to the Node process and does not limit all native memory |
| CI or temporary larger builder | Moves the highest peak away from the production VPS | Build speed is governed by the builder, not production swap | Strong when the lockfile and artifact process are fixed | Additional infrastructure cost; production host remains small |
| Larger permanent VPS | Raises the available peak budget for all resident workloads | Less dependence on swap | Stable once sized for the workload | Higher recurring instance cost; solves a host-wide shortage |
The key decision is whether the limit is host-wide or cgroup-specific. Free RAM alongside an increasing cgroup oom_kill counter calls for a quota change or a different placement. Low host memory with no usable swap calls for reducing resident services, adding permitted swap, or adding RAM.

Practical playbooks for 1 GB and 2 GB servers
1 GB VPS
- Record versions, limits, and current swap before changing the workload.
- Stop nonessential services and run one npm operation at a time.
- Add provider-approved swap and verify it with
swapon --show. - Watch
free -hand the kernel log while runningnpm cior the build. - If JavaScript heap growth is the measured problem, test a conservative
NODE_OPTIONSvalue such as the 512 MB example, leaving room for everything outside V8. - If the cgroup still records
oom_kill, build on a temporary larger machine or resize rather than lowering the heap indefinitely.
A 1 GB label does not guarantee that 1 GB is available to Node. The operating system, SSH session, service manager, database, and cgroup accounting consume part of it before npm starts.
2 GB VPS
- Measure the build’s RSS peak with the same services enabled in production.
- Use the Node documentation’s 1.5 GiB example only as a starting point for a machine with 2 GiB, and reserve the remainder for the OS and other processes.
- Keep swap available for brief spikes, while checking that sustained swapping is not masking an undersized build environment.
- Use a lockfile and a repeatable build command so that a successful run does not depend on a different dependency graph.
- Move the build or increase the instance if the measured peak plus resident services exceeds the available budget.
On either size, a provider’s container quota takes precedence over the advertised RAM. A 2 GB host with a smaller service cgroup can fail sooner than an unconstrained 1 GB host running a lighter workload.
Troubleshooting branches after the first attempt
The log names node and shows an OOM kill
Treat this as confirmed memory pressure. Check whether the kill occurred in the host or a cgroup, then apply the least disruptive available remedy: free headroom, serialize work, add allowed swap, and move or resize the build. Do not start by increasing the heap; that can make the process compete for the same constrained memory more aggressively.
The command reports a V8 fatal heap error
This is a different failure path. Measure the JavaScript workload and raise --max-old-space-size only if the host has room, or reduce the build’s allocation. A larger V8 limit cannot exceed a cgroup ceiling and may turn a recoverable run into an OS-level kill if native and non-Node memory are ignored.
oom_kill does not increase, but the shell still says Killed
Check the unit journal and provider events for an administrative kill, timeout, or supervisor policy. Confirm that the command is not wrapped by a deployment tool with its own limits. Also verify that you are reading the cgroup containing the failing process rather than the host’s root cgroup.
Swap is enabled but the process still dies
Confirm that the swap device or file is actually active, then inspect the cgroup limit. Swap can cushion a host-wide spike, but it does not enlarge a provider-enforced memory maximum. If the cgroup reaches its ceiling, only reducing the peak, changing the quota, or moving the workload resolves the kill.
The build succeeds once and fails on a retry
Compare the concurrent services, dependency state, and available memory at each run. A one-time success can occur when cache, database, or background-job usage is lower. Use a lockfile, a clean npm ci run, and a scheduled or isolated build to remove those variables; do not treat one successful retry as proof that the server has adequate headroom.
A reliable deployment pattern
For a small production VPS, keep the memory-intensive phase off the always-on machine whenever practical:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Run tests and the production build in CI or on a temporary machine with enough peak memory.
- Use the committed lockfile and the same Node major version intended for production.
- Publish the generated artifact and install only the runtime dependencies on the VPS.
- Monitor the VPS with
free -h, process RSS, kernel OOM messages, and cgroupmemory.events. - If the runtime itself reaches the limit, reduce resident services or resize; do not assume that moving only the build fixes a runtime memory leak.
This arrangement separates build capacity from runtime capacity. It also makes failures easier to classify: a build failure belongs to the builder’s peak budget, while a runtime OOM belongs to the production service’s steady-state and request-time usage.
Quick Recap
What to remember
Killedis commonly an OS or cgroup SIGKILL caused by memory exhaustion, not an npm-specific diagnostic.- Kernel logs and cgroup
memory.eventsshould confirm the mechanism before you tune Node flags. - V8 heap size is distinct from total process memory; RSS, native modules, child processes, and other services need their own allowance.
- Swap can prevent a short host-wide spike but cannot defeat a provider memory ceiling and is slower than RAM.
- When the measured peak genuinely exceeds the VPS, build elsewhere, use a temporary larger builder, or resize the instance.
