If IDT High Definition Audio CODEC shows a yellow warning icon, reports Code 10, or your speakers stopped working after an upgrade, first switch the device to Windows’ built-in High Definition Audio Device driver. In Device Manager, open Sound, video and game controllers, select the IDT entry, choose Update driver → Browse my computer for drivers → Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer, select High Definition Audio Device, accept the warning, and restart. If that does not restore sound, uninstall the IDT device, restart, and install the audio package made for your exact computer model from its manufacturer.
What IDT High Definition Audio CODEC is
IDT High Definition Audio CODEC is a Windows Device Manager entry representing an audio device and its driver. You normally find it under Sound, video and game controllers. The driver translates Windows audio into signals your laptop’s speakers, headphone jack and microphone hardware can use.

The entry is not present on every computer. Microsoft specifically notes: “Not all systems will have an IDT High Definition Audio CODEC.” Do not install an IDT package merely because a guide mentions it; identify the hardware and model first. Newer systems may use a different audio manufacturer or a Microsoft-provided driver.
Typical symptoms and what they mean
- Yellow exclamation mark: Windows detected a problem with the device or its driver. The device may appear but produce no audio.
- Code 10 (“This device cannot start”): Windows could not start the installed driver. A mismatched or damaged package is a common possibility, but Code 10 does not identify one universal cause.
- No sound after a Windows upgrade: Dell documents this on some notebooks after an upgrade to Windows 10. Windows Update may also show error
0x8007001fwhile trying to install the audio driver. - Missing IDT entry: The computer may never have used IDT hardware, or the device may currently be hidden, disabled or represented by another driver.
- Sound works but laptop controls are missing: The generic Microsoft driver can restore basic playback while omitting manufacturer-specific controls such as jack detection or special audio effects.
Before changing the driver
Confirm the device and operating system
- Press
Windows+Xand open Device Manager. - Expand Sound, video and game controllers. Look for IDT High Definition Audio CODEC, a warning icon, or an unknown audio device.
- Open Settings → System → About and note the Windows edition and version. Also record the computer manufacturer and exact model number.
Do not download a driver until the model and Windows version match. IDT packages in Microsoft’s Update Catalog include “Tempo driver update for IDT High Definition Audio CODEC” entries for Windows 10 and later dated 2015, as well as older Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 packages. Their age and model-specific design make an apparently similar download unsafe to assume compatible.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Check simple audio conditions
- Click the speaker icon on the taskbar and verify that the correct output device is selected and not muted.
- Disconnect headphones, docks and USB audio devices temporarily, then test the built-in speakers.
- Restart Windows once. A pending update or service restart can leave an otherwise valid driver unavailable.
- In Device Manager, open the IDT device’s Properties and read the Device status message. Record any code before uninstalling anything.
Fix 1: Select Windows’ generic High Definition Audio Device driver
This is Microsoft’s documented first repair and the safest manual change because it uses a driver already included with Windows. It often restores playback when an IDT package is incompatible with the current Windows build.
- Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click IDT High Definition Audio CODEC and choose Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers.
- Choose Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
- Select High Definition Audio Device from the list. If more than one entry appears, use the one identified as a Microsoft or Windows generic audio device rather than an IDT package.
- Windows may warn that the driver is not specifically designed for the device. Confirm the change only if the list entry is the built-in High Definition Audio Device.
- Wait for installation to finish. Restart Windows even if no restart prompt appears.
- Test the speakers, headphone jack and microphone. In Settings → System → Sound, select the intended output and input devices.
If Device Manager does not show the IDT entry, choose View → Show hidden devices and check again. Do not force the generic driver onto an unrelated device simply to make a warning disappear.
Generic Windows driver versus an OEM IDT package
The two driver choices solve different problems. Use the generic driver to test basic Windows audio; use the manufacturer’s package when you need the notebook’s complete feature set or the generic driver does not work.

| Consideration | High Definition Audio Device (generic) | IDT package from the computer manufacturer |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Provides a Windows-supported baseline for standard audio playback and recording. | Matches the audio hardware and firmware design of a particular computer model. |
| Chance of restoring basic sound | Often useful when the existing IDT driver is broken or incompatible; actual results depend on the hardware. | Best choice when the model-specific package is available and correctly matched. |
| Exact Windows-version compatibility | Maintained through Windows’ own driver set. | Must be verified on the manufacturer’s support page for the model and Windows edition. |
| Laptop-specific controls | May not provide special jack detection, microphone processing or vendor audio controls. | More likely to retain features designed by the laptop manufacturer. |
| Installation source | Already available through Device Manager on a functioning Windows installation. | Official manufacturer support page, normally in the Audio or Sound category. |
Fix 2: Uninstall IDT, restart, and reinstall the OEM driver
Use this route if the generic driver does not restore sound, if Code 10 remains, or if you need the manufacturer’s audio controls. Dell documents this sequence for supported notebooks; on another brand, use that brand’s equivalent support page.
- Download the correct audio package before removing the current driver. Go to your computer manufacturer’s official support site, enter the exact model or service tag, open the driver downloads, and locate the Audio section. Confirm that the package supports your Windows version.
- Save the installer locally. If the manufacturer provides a release date, version and readme, compare those details with your model and operating system.
- In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click IDT High Definition Audio CODEC and select Uninstall device. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver software, select it only when you have already downloaded the verified OEM installer.
- Confirm the uninstall and restart Windows. Windows may temporarily use a generic audio driver or show no working output until the next step.
- Run the manufacturer’s audio installer as an administrator if required. Follow its prompts and restart when requested.
- Return to Device Manager and open the device’s Properties. Check the Driver tab for the installed provider, date and version, then test speakers, microphone and headphone detection.
Dell’s guidance identifies the supported notebook driver as the package that enables IDT High-Definition Audio on supported models. That guidance was current on 3 May 2026; other manufacturers may publish different packages or discontinue older operating-system support.
Fix 3: Install a package from Microsoft Update Catalog only when it matches
Microsoft Update Catalog contains historical IDT packages, including Tempo driver updates. It can help when the OEM download is unavailable, but it is not a universal IDT repository. Check the hardware model, Windows version, architecture and package date before installing.

- Prefer the computer manufacturer’s package whenever it is available for your exact model.
- Use the Catalog listing’s operating-system description and architecture to reject packages for another Windows release.
- Download only a package whose hardware and operating-system compatibility you can verify.
- If the download is a compressed archive rather than an installer, extract it to a clearly named folder and remember its location.
A Microsoft Q&A case describes extracting a driver package and browsing to its folder from Device Manager after a Code 10 failure. That is a case-specific procedure, not a guarantee for every IDT device. Apply it only after verifying the package against the laptop model and Windows version.
Recommended Free Tools
Manually point Device Manager to an extracted driver folder
Use this procedure only with a verified package that contains the driver files (including an appropriate .inf file).
- Extract the downloaded archive to a local folder; do not browse to the compressed file itself.
- Open Device Manager, right-click the affected audio device and choose Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers, use Browse to select the extracted folder, and leave Include subfolders enabled if the package stores files in subdirectories.
- Choose Next and let Windows inspect the folder. If Windows reports that no compatible driver was found, stop and verify the package rather than forcing an unrelated driver.
- Restart Windows and test all audio outputs and inputs.
What to do when the repair still fails
Code 10 returns immediately
Read the exact Device status text, then undo the last driver change and install the verified OEM package. A recurring Code 10 after both a generic and OEM attempt can indicate a package mismatch, corrupted Windows components, firmware limitations or failing hardware. Do not keep cycling through random IDT downloads.

Windows Update shows 0x8007001f
Use Device Manager’s manual driver selection rather than repeatedly retrying Windows Update. If sound remains unavailable, uninstall the IDT entry, restart, and run the model-specific package as described above.
Playback returns but jack detection or controls disappear
This usually reflects the difference between a baseline Microsoft driver and an OEM package. Keep the generic driver if reliable playback is your priority; otherwise install the manufacturer package that supports your model and Windows release.
The IDT device is missing entirely
- Enable View → Show hidden devices in Device Manager.
- Check Other devices for an unknown multimedia or audio controller.
- Install pending Windows updates, restart, and check Device Manager again.
- Use the manufacturer’s model-specific support page. If no compatible audio device appears after a correct installation, seek the manufacturer’s hardware diagnostics; the computer may not use IDT audio at all.
The installer refuses to run
Confirm that the download is for the exact model and Windows architecture. Extracted packages can sometimes be installed through Device Manager, but only when their files are intended for that hardware. Do not disable Windows security features or use an unsigned package simply to bypass an installer error.

Sound is distorted or limited after installation
Test with the OEM package if you were using the generic driver, and test the generic driver if the OEM package introduced the problem. Compare speaker, headphone and microphone behavior separately; one endpoint can work while another remains misconfigured.
Safe driver-download and rollback practices
- Download from Microsoft or the computer manufacturer’s official support site, not an unverified driver mirror.
- Create a restore point before replacing a working driver when System Protection is enabled.
- Keep the previous installer so you can return to a known-good package.
- In Device Manager’s Driver tab, use Roll Back Driver when Windows offers it and the problem began immediately after an update.
- Never choose a driver solely because its name contains “IDT.” Model, operating system and hardware identifiers matter.
- Do not buy a physical audio product to solve this software entry; the documented fixes concern driver selection and installation, and no particular hardware purchase is established by these repairs.
When to suspect hardware rather than the driver
If neither the generic Windows driver nor the verified OEM package produces an audio endpoint, and Device Manager continues to report a start failure, software may not be the only issue. Test with headphones and the built-in speakers, check whether the microphone is detected, and run the computer maker’s hardware diagnostics. A failed speaker, jack, amplifier or motherboard component requires manufacturer service; changing driver packages cannot repair a physical fault.

Start with Windows’ built-in High Definition Audio Device through Device Manager. If that does not work, uninstall the IDT entry, restart, and install the audio driver published for your exact computer model. Treat Microsoft Update Catalog packages and extracted-driver instructions as compatibility-sensitive alternatives, not universal fixes. Some computers do not contain IDT audio hardware, and persistent Code 10 errors after matched driver installations may require the manufacturer’s diagnostics or hardware service.
