To update a Lenovo audio driver in Windows 10, first install pending updates in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, restart, then use Device Manager. For the most accurate package, identify the exact Lenovo model and install the audio driver from Lenovo Support or Lenovo Vantage. If sound stopped immediately after an update, try Roll Back Driver before reinstalling anything.

This guide covers the manual paths, recovery options and the Windows 10 support limitation that applies today.

What a Lenovo audio driver does

A driver is the software layer that lets Windows communicate with the laptop’s audio hardware. Lenovo systems may use a Realtek, Intel or another audio component, and the correct package depends on the exact computer model, Windows edition and hardware configuration. A driver made for a different Lenovo model can fail to install, remove enhancements or leave the speakers and microphone unavailable.

Updating is most useful when sound disappeared after Windows Update, the microphone is not detected, headphones are not recognized, or Device Manager shows an error on the audio device. Microsoft states that updating an audio driver can restore sound after an update. The safest approach is to work from broad, official channels first and then move to the model-specific Lenovo package.

Before you update: identify the Lenovo computer

Have the model name or serial number ready before downloading a package. You can find it on the case label, in the original documentation, or in Windows:

  1. Press Windows key + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter.
  2. In System Information, note System Manufacturer, System Model and, where shown, the serial number.
  3. Keep the model information beside you when using Lenovo Support or Lenovo Vantage. Do not select a driver merely because its name contains “Realtek” or “Intel.”

Save open work and connect the laptop to power. If the machine has no sound at all, keep a second device available so you can read Lenovo’s instructions while the affected computer restarts.

Method 1: install pending Windows 10 updates first

Windows Update can deliver a compatible audio driver and is the recommended first check when a sound problem began after an operating-system update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates. Install every available update that Windows offers.
  3. Choose Restart now when prompted, or restart manually after installation completes.
  4. Test the speakers, headphone jack and microphone after Windows starts again.

A restart matters because Windows may not load a newly installed driver until the audio services and device stack are reinitialized. If Windows Update reports that the computer is up to date but the problem remains, continue with Device Manager.

Method 2: update the installed device in Device Manager

Device Manager can search for a driver for the audio device already registered in Windows. This route is useful when Windows Update did not offer a fix.

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click the Lenovo audio device. Its name may include Realtek, Intel or another hardware description.
  4. Select Update driver, then choose the option that lets Windows search automatically.
  5. Follow the prompts. Restart Windows even if the wizard does not explicitly require it.

If the audio device is missing from that category, check Other devices for an entry with a warning icon. In Device Manager, use View > Show hidden devices and scan again. A warning symbol or an “Unknown device” entry indicates that Windows is not loading a usable driver; record the device name before changing it.

Method 3: use Lenovo Vantage for a model-specific update

Lenovo Vantage is Lenovo’s Windows utility for detecting updates for a particular computer. It is the more automated Lenovo route and avoids guessing which package belongs to your model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Lenovo Vantage from the Start menu. If it is already open, allow it to finish checking the computer.
  2. Open its update or system-update area and scan for available driver updates.
  3. Select the audio or chipset-related package that Lenovo identifies for your model, then let the installation finish.
  4. Restart Windows and test audio playback and recording.

Vantage may offer several updates at once. Install the audio package first when sound is the immediate problem, or follow Lenovo’s displayed order if it identifies a prerequisite. After installing a Lenovo package, return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check again; Lenovo’s Windows 10 guidance recommends keeping the operating system updated through official channels.

Method 4: download the exact package from Lenovo Support

Use Lenovo Support when Vantage is unavailable, cannot complete an installation, or you need to choose a package manually. This is the highest model-specific route.

  1. Open Lenovo Support and enter the exact product name, machine type or serial number.
  2. Choose the Windows 10 operating system when the site asks for an operating-system version.
  3. Open the Audio category and read the package description, version and release information.
  4. Download the package that Lenovo lists for that exact model. Do not substitute a package from a similar-looking model.
  5. Close other programs, run the downloaded installer, accept the prompts and restart Windows.
  6. Run Windows Update once more after the Lenovo installation, then test the speakers, headphones and microphone.

If Lenovo lists both Realtek and Intel audio components, use the package that matches the component shown for your model and Device Manager. If you cannot determine which one applies, stop before installing and recheck the serial number or model page rather than trying packages at random.

Which update route should you choose?

Route Source authority and model specificity Automation Recovery value
Windows Update Microsoft; broad Windows compatibility rather than a manually selected Lenovo model package Automatic checking and installation Useful first step when a Windows update caused the problem
Device Manager Microsoft; works with the audio device currently registered in Windows Guided update from the device’s context menu Provides update, rollback and reinstall controls
Lenovo Vantage Lenovo; detects packages for the specific computer Automated Lenovo scan and installation Can apply the manufacturer’s recommended package
Lenovo Support Lenovo; exact model or serial number required Manual download and installation Best option when Vantage is unavailable or an installer must be re-run
Generic Windows audio driver Microsoft; model-agnostic fallback Selected manually in Device Manager Useful when the Lenovo driver will not load or is causing the failure

If sound stopped immediately after an update

Roll back the driver

Rollback is the most direct recovery when audio worked before a driver or Windows update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  2. Right-click the affected audio device and choose Properties.
  3. Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver.
  4. Choose a reason if Windows asks, confirm the rollback and restart.

Microsoft notes that Roll Back Driver appears only when a previous driver version exists. If the button is unavailable, there is no stored version for Windows to restore; use reinstall or the generic-driver fallback instead.

Uninstall and let Windows reinstall the device

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the audio device and select Uninstall device.
  2. Confirm the removal, then restart Windows.
  3. After the restart, Windows will attempt to detect the hardware and load an available driver. Check Device Manager again and run Windows Update.

If the uninstall dialog offers an option to remove the driver package, leave it cleared on the first attempt. Removing the package makes a later reinstall depend on another source, such as Lenovo Support.

Select the generic Windows audio driver

When the Lenovo package is damaged or incompatible, Device Manager can use Microsoft’s generic audio driver as a fallback.

  1. Right-click the audio device in Device Manager and choose Update driver.
  2. Select Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  3. Choose the generic High Definition Audio Device entry if it is listed, continue through the warning and restart.

The generic driver may restore basic playback and recording but can omit Lenovo-specific enhancements, jack detection or control-panel features. If it restores sound, keep it as a stable fallback or later replace it with the exact Lenovo package.

Restart the Windows audio services

A correct driver cannot produce sound if the audio services failed to start.

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Audio. Right-click it and choose Restart; choose Start if it is stopped.
  3. Find Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and restart or start it as well.
  4. Close the Services window and test audio again.

If a service immediately stops, restart Windows and check Device Manager for a warning icon before repeating the driver installation.

Verify that the update worked

  • In Device Manager, the audio device appears under Sound, video and game controllers without a warning icon.
  • In Settings > System > Sound, the intended speakers, headphones and microphone are available for selection.
  • A short playback test works through the built-in speakers and, if applicable, headphones.
  • The microphone records input in an application that has permission to use it.
  • After one more restart, the device remains available rather than disappearing.

If only one application is silent, check that app’s selected output device and volume before changing the driver again. If every application is silent and the device repeatedly disappears, repeat the model-specific Lenovo installation or use Lenovo Support’s hardware diagnostics for the exact computer.

Windows 10 support status in 2026

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. The procedures above still describe the Windows 10 menus and driver controls, but an installation that remains on Windows 10 should be treated as an unsupported platform. Check Lenovo’s current operating-system compatibility information before moving to a newer Windows release, and back up important files before a major upgrade.

As an optional shortcut, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices, identify outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; the 2-day free trial requires no credit card and is followed by a subscription. Results vary, so it is a convenience rather than a guarantee that every audio failure will be repaired.
