Start with the exact game’s system requirements, restart the PC, update Windows and graphics drivers from official sources, and close unnecessary apps and overlays. If the game is on Steam, verify its installed files. Then troubleshoot the symptom you actually have: stutter, a game-only crash, slow loading, or a whole-PC freeze can point to different causes. These checks are general PC guidance, not a diagnosis for every horror game; the game’s current support page and patch notes take precedence.
How do I fix game stuttering?
First establish what “stuttering” means in your case. Low frame rate is persistently choppy play; a hitch is a brief pause or uneven frame delivery. Note when it happens—at launch, during a particular scene, after a recent update, or only after playing for a while—and record the game version, launcher, Windows version, CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, storage type, graphics-driver version, and settings. This baseline helps you tell whether a change improved anything.

Check requirements and make a controlled test
Compare your PC with the requirements for the specific game. A PC below minimum requirements may not run reliably; if it meets minimum but not recommended specifications, try lowering demanding graphics settings or resolution. Restart before testing, and change one setting at a time so you can identify what matters. Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting guidance makes the same distinction between minimum and recommended requirements: Capcom: Troubleshooting for Steam games.
Reduce competing software and check heat
Close nonessential applications, recording software, and performance overlays while testing. They can use resources or affect stability. Check that the PC has clear ventilation and is not getting unusually hot; heat can contribute to performance problems. On a laptop, check the game publisher’s or GPU maker’s instructions for selecting the intended high-performance GPU.

Try lower resolution or graphics settings if performance is still uneven. Drive reads and available memory can also contribute to hitches, so note whether the game is installed on a slow drive and whether other applications are consuming memory. Steam lists slow drive reads and limited free memory among possible hardware-related contributors: Steam: Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Hardware. Deleting shader or cache files is not a universal fix; Capcom mentions game cache deletion only as a conditional step for some graphical issues, so follow the specific game’s instructions rather than removing files at random.
Why does my PC game keep crashing?
Work through the low-risk checks before making invasive changes. A crash only in the game differs from a full-system freeze, blue screen, or restart; if the whole PC becomes unstable, skip to the system-crash guidance below.

Update, restart, and verify game files
- Check the game’s current requirements and patch notes. A problem that began immediately after a game, Windows, or driver update may be related to that change.
- Install Windows updates and current graphics drivers using the instructions from Microsoft or the GPU manufacturer. Restart after installing drivers. Avoid third-party driver-removal tools unless a persistent problem and the official instructions justify that extra step.
- Close unnecessary background apps and overlays before relaunching, so they are not adding avoidable variables.
- If you use Steam, verify the installation: restart the PC, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. It can take several minutes. Steam may report a few files that were not verified because local configuration files are intentionally not replaced; that message alone does not necessarily mean the repair failed. Verification can also reacquire missing or corrupted files. See Steam: Verify Integrity of Game Files.
For a non-Steam install, use the launcher’s own repair or verification option if available. Do not assume Steam’s menu path applies to other launchers.
Use security exceptions only when the game’s support page calls for them
Some publisher instructions may describe targeted antivirus or firewall exceptions, but these are not general-purpose fixes. Follow the exact game-specific guidance, use the narrowest applicable exception, and do not permanently disable security protection. Capcom’s general Steam checklist includes publisher-specific troubleshooting steps, which should not be treated as universal directions for every title: Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting guide.

Capture the failure before escalating
Write down the exact error text, whether the crash occurs on launch or during play, where it happens, and whether restarting changes it. Keep any crash report the game creates. Steam notes that launch failures can arise from varied software and hardware configurations; if common checks do not help, contact the game’s developer or publisher rather than guessing at more disruptive fixes: Steam: Games do not run after ‘Preparing to Launch’.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why are game loading times so long?
Separate download or installation time from the time spent launching the game or loading a level. The remedies differ: a slow download is not evidence that the game’s storage reads are slow. For launch and level loads, check how much memory is available and which drive contains the game. Slow drive reads and memory constraints can matter, while software handling of game files can also affect loading; neither establishes the cause in every case. An SSD is a conditional option if the game is installed on a slow drive and your PC supports the SSD’s interface and form factor. Check compatibility before buying; an SSD will not resolve unrelated crashes or a game-engine problem. Before moving or reinstalling a game, check that your saves are backed up and understand the launcher’s cloud-save behavior.
What if the whole PC freezes, shows a blue screen, or restarts?
That is not merely a game crash. Steam Support cautions that system crashes can indicate a computer problem; overheating is especially plausible when performance slows before the crash. Stop repeatedly stress-testing an unstable PC. If freezes, blue screens, or restarts persist, seek PC support instead of continuing to treat the issue as a game-only fault. Steam’s general performance guide covers this distinction: Steam: Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Hardware.
What to send the game’s developer or publisher
If the basic checks do not resolve the problem, a concise, reproducible report is more useful than saying only that the game is broken. Include:
- Game name and version, launcher, and Windows version.
- CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, storage type, and graphics-driver version.
- The exact symptom and error text, where and when it occurs, and steps that reproduce it.
- Whether it started after an update or hardware/settings change, and whether a restart changes it.
- Graphics settings and crash-report files, if available.
- A DxDiag report or equivalent system details if requested by the publisher.
For example, Capcom’s Resident Evil Village Steam guide requests system information and details about the issue and explains collecting DxDiag information; those directions are specific to that game and platform, not a universal form: Capcom: Resident Evil Village – General Troubleshooting Guide – Steam.
