To fix high ping or lag in an MMO, first check the game’s server status and region, then compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet and use the game’s own diagnostics to locate the problem. This order helps distinguish server distance or an outage from a home-network issue, an ISP route problem, or non-network stutter.
Identify what kind of lag you are experiencing
Look at the MMO’s network indicator or diagnostic graph, if it has one. Note whether ping is consistently high or jumps in spikes, and whether the issue affects only this game. Rubber-banding, delayed actions, or skills that do not fire promptly can point to a latency problem. A game that stutters while its network indicator remains stable may have a different cause; the network guidance here does not establish that as a connection problem.

Check the game server and region
- Check the game publisher’s server-status page or official channels for an outage or maintenance.
- If the game lets you choose a server or region, check which one you are using. Select a nearby region when practical; distance can contribute to high ping, but a nearby region does not rule out other routing issues.
- Compare the game’s network indicator before and after any change, rather than relying only on how the game feels.
Server problems and the distance to a game server can contribute to high ping and lag, as EA’s high-ping troubleshooting guidance explains. Its game-specific menu instructions apply to Battlefield 6, not MMOs generally.

Test the connection between your PC and router
If you are using Wi-Fi
Try Ethernet if you can. Wireless interference can cause lag spikes or packet loss, so a wired test helps determine whether Wi-Fi is a factor. It will not necessarily lower ping if the cause is server distance or a route beyond your home.

If Ethernet is not practical, test closer to the router, check that the signal is strong, and reduce competing network activity—for example, pause large downloads or streaming while you compare. A crowded Wi-Fi network or poor signal can contribute to connection problems. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking for processes that consume substantial network bandwidth. You can ask your ISP about wireless-channel congestion if local interference appears likely.
If you are already using Ethernet
- Check that the cable is seated securely at both the PC and router, and connected to the intended router port.
- Try another Ethernet cable if you have one. If your PC has no Ethernet port, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter is an optional way to test a wired connection.
These checks follow Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance. They can help isolate a faulty cable or Wi-Fi connection, but do not guarantee lower latency.

Restart equipment and compare devices
If the connection still seems to be local, restart the modem and router according to their manufacturer’s instructions. This briefly disconnects everyone using that Wi-Fi, so choose a time when that interruption is acceptable.

Use diagnostics to locate a route problem
When basic checks do not explain the issue, use the diagnostic method recommended by the game’s support team. A traceroute can help show whether a problem appears near your computer or router, within the ISP network, or closer to the game server. It is evidence for troubleshooting, not a guaranteed diagnosis on its own.
Guild Wars 2 Support’s connectivity and lag guide recommends traceroute and asks players with continuing high ping or disconnections to provide a WinMTR file. For another MMO, follow that publisher’s own instructions instead. Riot’s PC connection troubleshooting guide directs players who still have connection problems to collect logs and submit a support ticket.

Reserve advanced network changes for specific symptoms
VPNs and proxies
Do not treat a VPN as a routine ping fix. Riot recommends disabling VPNs or proxies during ordinary connection troubleshooting; it suggests testing a VPN for routing only in specific cases when technical support advises it.
DNS, firewall, drivers, and ports
DNS changes may help with particular connection or DNS-gateway problems, but the cited game-support guidance does not establish DNS as a universal remedy for high in-game latency. Driver updates, firewall rules, and port configuration matter when a specific connection problem points to them. Follow the MMO’s official instructions and your router documentation; do not broadly disable the firewall or make arbitrary port changes.

Windows network reset
Keep Windows network reset as a later troubleshooting step, not the first response to lag in one MMO. Microsoft notes that a reset removes and reinstalls network adapters and resets their settings; VPN or virtual-switch software may need to be set up again afterward. What to send support
If the problem persists, contact the game’s support team or your ISP with observations rather than just saying the game feels laggy. Include the game and region, when the problem occurs, whether it is constant or spiky, what happened during the Ethernet and device comparisons, and the diagnostic file or logs requested by the relevant support team. These details make it easier to investigate whether the issue is local, on the ISP route, or near the game service.
