Then verify radiator fans and airflow, and confirm the radiator sits higher than the pump. Compare temperatures with the exact processor’s thermal limit and the workload; there is no single safe temperature for every CPU.
First, work out when the temperature is high
Check whether the temperature is abnormal in BIOS with minimal activity, during a sustained workload, or only during short boost spikes. A high reading under heavy work is not directly comparable to a brief idle reading, and CPU models have different thermal limits.

- Record the CPU model, the temperature, and what the computer was doing when you saw it.
- Look for signs of thermal throttling, unexpected shutdowns, or unusual pump noise. These are more concerning than a brief temperature spike by itself.
- Use the processor’s published thermal limit as a reference, not as a target idle temperature. NZXT’s 2026 guidance, citing AMD and Intel product-page data current as of November 11, 2025, lists TJMAXX values of 95°C for the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D, Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and Ryzen 7 9700X; 105°C for the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K and Core Ultra 7 265K; and 100°C for the Intel Core i5-14400F. These examples do not establish limits for other CPUs. NZXT’s overheating guide explains the distinction.
NZXT notes that 70°C or higher at startup idle can be a potential overheating sign in its guidance, but it is not a universal CPU limit. Treat it as a reason to investigate, not a diagnosis by itself.

A mounting or contact problem is a sensible first check when temperatures rise immediately after installation. Intel’s overheating guidance and NZXT’s Kraken troubleshooting both point to compatibility, correct mounting, and thermal interface material as factors to verify.

- Simple, High-Performance All-in-One CPU Cooling: Renowned CORSAIR engineering delivers strong, low-noise cooling that helps your CPU reach its full potential
- Efficient, Low-Noise Pump: Keeps your coolant circulating at a high flow rate while generating a whisper-quiet 20 dBA
- Convex Cold Plate with Pre-Applied Thermal Paste: The slightly convex shape ensures maximum contact with your CPU’s integrated heat spreader, with thermal paste applied in an optimised pattern to speed up installation
- RS120 ARGB Fans: RS ARGB fans create strong airflow and high static pressure, with easy ARGB control via a compatible motherboard. CORSAIR AirGuide technology and Magnetic Dome bearings ensure great cooling performance and low noise
- Easy Daisy-Chained Connections: Reduce the wiring in your system by daisy-chaining your RS ARGB fans and connecting them to just one 4-pin PWM fan header and one +5V ARGB header
- Shut down the PC, switch off and unplug the power supply, and let the system cool before touching the cooler.
- Confirm the AIO supports your CPU socket and that you used the correct socket-specific bracket, backplate, and standoffs. NZXT notes that the wrong backplate or standoffs can prevent proper CPU contact.
- Check that the protective film was removed from the cold plate before installation.
- Make sure the block sits evenly on the CPU and its fasteners are secured as directed in the cooler’s installation manual. Do not overtighten or improvise mounting hardware.
- If the fit or paste application is suspect, remove the block, clean both contact surfaces, and apply fresh thermal paste as the cooler maker instructs. Reinstall the block evenly. Intel’s processor-overheating guide also advises checking cooler compatibility, installation, and thermal interface material.
Verify pump power, RPM, and control settings
An AIO’s wiring varies by model. A pump may have separate power, tachometer/sense, USB, and motherboard connections, so follow the cooler’s diagram and motherboard manual rather than assuming every pump belongs on the same header.
- With the PC off, trace each cooler cable and confirm it is connected to the location specified in the AIO manual. Check that any required SATA or other power lead, motherboard header, and USB connection are secure.
- Start the system and check pump RPM in BIOS or the cooler’s control software. Confirm that any pump-control or header setting matches the manufacturer’s instructions.
- If the reading is 0 RPM or N/A, recheck the connections and settings first. A missing RPM reading can indicate a power or sensing issue, but does not by itself prove the pump has failed.
Use the AIO’s own wiring instructions for the exact connection and control mode. Corsair’s overheating troubleshooting, Intel’s guide, and NZXT’s Kraken installation and troubleshooting guide all direct owners to check cooler connections or operation.

- CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
- ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
- NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
- INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
- INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard
Check radiator fans and case airflow
Confirm that the radiator fans spin under normal operation and that their cables are connected correctly. Remove dust or debris from the radiator fins, and make sure case intake and exhaust openings are not blocked. A working pump cannot compensate for fans that are stopped or airflow that is restricted.
NZXT’s Kraken troubleshooting guide recommends checking fan operation and clearing radiator dust; Intel likewise recommends checking the cooling solution and airflow when diagnosing overheating.

Check radiator position and trapped air
Mount the radiator so its highest point is above the pump, keeping trapped air away from the pump. A top-mounted radiator is a common solution when the case supports it; a front-mounted radiator can also work if its position keeps the radiator’s high point above the pump. Confirm the correct arrangement and tube orientation in the manual for your particular AIO and case rather than applying a universal tube-position rule.
See Corsair’s radiator-mounting guidance and NZXT’s Kraken installation guidance for model- and layout-specific advice.

Know when to stop troubleshooting
Contact the cooler manufacturer if the pump remains at 0 RPM or N/A after you have verified the model-specific wiring and settings, temperatures remain abnormal, or noise and shutdowns suggest a pump or blockage problem. Check warranty terms before removing or replacing the unit.

Do not open a sealed AIO to drain, refill, or repair it. Corsair warns that opening or modifying its cooler can void the warranty; NZXT says Kraken closed-loop systems are not intended to be drained or refilled. Use the manufacturer’s support or warranty process for a suspected internal failure.
Decide whether you need a remount, service, or a different cooler
The evidence points to different next steps: suspect contact if the problem began after installation and the block, film, bracket, or paste needs correction; suspect a fan or airflow issue if the radiator fans are stopped or obstructed; suspect pump or blockage failure if operation remains abnormal after wiring and control checks. Replacement is not automatic: check the CPU’s requirements against the cooler’s capacity, verify socket and case/radiator compatibility, and consider warranty status before buying another unit.
