If the game or SteamVR crashes, use Steam’s general SteamVR recovery steps—but Valve’s published guidance does not provide a specific, guaranteed fix for Alyx crashes.
First identify what is going wrong
“Stuttering” can describe missed frames, unstable headset tracking, or a freeze; those symptoms do not establish one cause on their own. Before changing settings, note whether the problem is continuous or intermittent, whether it happens only in Alyx or in other VR apps too, and whether the game closes, SteamVR fails, or Windows stops responding.

Keep your GPU and CPU models, installed RAM, headset and connection, SteamVR status, and any crash or error text handy. This information helps distinguish a game-specific issue from a broader VR setup or system problem.

Valve’s Alyx-specific advice begins with basic resource and tracking checks:
#1 Best Overall
- Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver recommended by NVIDIA or AMD for your graphics card. Valve notes that both vendors have released game-optimized drivers, but its guidance does not specify a driver version.
- Free space on the primary drive. Valve recommends making sure the drive has available space.
- Close background programs. Pay particular attention to applications using dedicated GPU memory. In Windows Task Manager, open the Details tab, right-click a column header, choose Select columns, and enable Dedicated GPU memory to check usage.
- Check headset tracking. Poor tracking can feel like low frame rate or judder. Consult the documentation for your headset and tracking system if movement looks unstable.
Use SteamVR’s frame-timing display while playing
SteamVR’s frame-timing graph can show when timing spikes occur, but it does not identify the component or process responsible by itself. Open SteamVR Settings > Performance > Display Frame Timing, then run Alyx or another demanding VR game and watch for spikes while the problem is happening. Steam Support recommends using a process-heavy VR game for this check.
Test in a representative gameplay area rather than relying on the main menu: Valve says the menu is not the best way to judge performance. If other VR apps also show trouble, that points toward investigating SteamVR, tracking, drivers, or the PC setup rather than assuming Alyx alone is responsible.

Reduce rendering load one setting at a time
Make one change, then compare the same gameplay area before making another. This makes it easier to tell which adjustment helped.
Try SteamVR render resolution
In SteamVR Settings > Video > Render Resolution, try Auto if it is not selected. If performance improves, lower the resolution further as needed. Reducing render resolution can ease rendering load, with image clarity as the trade-off.
Rank #3
Lower refresh rate on Valve Index if GPU load appears high
If you use a Valve Index and suspect GPU-related frame lag, open SteamVR Settings > General > Refresh Rate and try 90 Hz instead of a higher rate. This is Valve’s suggested test for Index; it is not a requirement and does not apply as a setting recommendation for every headset.
Adjust Alyx fidelity and texture quality
In Alyx, open Settings > Performance and try Low Fidelity. If that improves the problem, raise fidelity gradually until you find a workable balance. You can also lower Texture Quality separately, rather than changing every visual setting at once. Alyx allows performance settings to be adjusted in game.

Know what the minimum requirements do—and do not—tell you
Steam’s current store listing gives these minimum requirements for Alyx. They are a baseline for running the game, not a guarantee of smooth performance at a particular resolution or refresh rate.
| Requirement | Steam-listed minimum |
|---|---|
| Processor and operating system | 64-bit processor and operating system; Windows 10 |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-7500 / AMD Ryzen 5 1600 |
| Memory | 12 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GTX 1060 / AMD RX 580 with 6 GB VRAM |
| VR | SteamVR; a VR headset is required |
On first launch, or after a hardware change, Alyx runs an automatic CPU/GPU benchmark, checks available system memory, and selects settings it considers appropriate. Valve says every PC differs and that users can fine-tune the experience. It also describes complex gameplay workloads that can keep an 8-core CPU and a 12 GB GPU busy at up to 144 Hz; that is an example of demanding VR use, not a minimum specification or a claim that every player needs that hardware.

If SteamVR itself is unstable
Steam Support’s general SteamVR troubleshooting steps are runtime-level recovery measures, not an Alyx-specific crash procedure. Try them if SteamVR—not just the game—is unstable:
- Verify the SteamVR tool files through Steam.
- Check that your graphics drivers are current.
- Restart SteamVR.
- Rerun Room Setup.
- Restart Windows.
- If the issue continues, try SteamVR safe mode. Steam Support advises contacting Steam Support if safe mode does not resolve it.
The Valve pages cited here do not describe a Half-Life: Alyx-specific crash-log workflow, launch option, or universal crash remedy. For a persistent crash, retain the exact error text and SteamVR system information and take them to official support rather than assuming a particular setting will fix every failure.
