If GTA Online is operational, troubleshoot your own connection next: check other online services, compare your speed with Rockstar’s guidance, try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi, then use the official network steps for your PC or console. These checks can help narrow down a problem, but none guarantees a fix.
First, check whether GTA Online is down
Open Rockstar Games Service Status and check GTA Online for your platform. The page lists PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. If Rockstar reports an outage or scheduled maintenance, wait and check again before changing router settings.

A status of “Up” does not prove your own connection is working properly. Rockstar notes that connection types can conflict between players and that problems may also stem from a player’s network setup. The status page is a useful first check, not a diagnosis of every failed connection.

Check your internet connection
See whether other websites or online services work, then run a speed test. Rockstar’s PC and console connection guides give these troubleshooting targets:
- Download: 7.5 Mbps, described by Rockstar as a good minimum target.
- Upload: 1 Mbps recommended; 0.5 Mbps is the stated minimum.
These are Rockstar’s guidance figures, not a guarantee against disconnects. Meeting them does not rule out latency, packet loss, wireless interference, or problems joining a particular session.

Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If you play over Wi-Fi, try connecting the console or PC to the router with an Ethernet cable, if practical. If the result improves, the wireless connection or local wireless path may be contributing. This comparison does not prove Wi-Fi is always the cause, or rule out an intermittent service issue.

Rockstar’s instructions differ by platform. Follow the guide that matches the system you use; avoid opening unrelated ports or changing router settings you cannot restore.

PC
Use Rockstar’s PC connection troubleshooting guide for the platform-specific steps. It lists GTA Online UDP ports 6672, 61455, 61457, 61456, and 61458, and also covers DNS and restarting the router. Do not assume these are the only ports a full platform setup may require; use Rockstar’s instructions rather than adding ports indiscriminately.
Xbox Series X|S
Follow Rockstar’s Xbox Series X|S connection troubleshooting guide. It covers clearing the console cache and alternate MAC address, checking NAT type, network ports, DNS, and restarting the router. Rockstar says a more open NAT has fewer conflicts, but changing NAT is not a guaranteed solution for every connection problem.

PlayStation 5
Use Rockstar’s PS5 connection troubleshooting guide for its system-cache procedure, NAT and port checks, DNS, and router guidance.
PlayStation 4
See Rockstar’s PS4 connection troubleshooting guide for NAT, ports, DNS, and router restart steps. It also recommends checking with your ISP for connection issues or temporary outages and verifying router firmware with the ISP.

Port forwarding or other router changes can affect NAT configuration. Make changes only as directed by the platform-specific guide, and contact your ISP if you are unsure how to restore a setting.

If the exact message is “Files required to play GTA Online could not be downloaded,” use Rockstar’s guidance for that PC error. Rockstar attributes it to a communication issue between Rockstar Games Services and the connection’s IP address. Its suggested checks include service status, the local connection, restarting the router, and changing DNS.
This explanation applies to that named error. It does not establish why every loading screen hangs or why every player loses a session.

When the problem remains
The official guides do not establish that an in-game event causes connection failures, and they do not give one comprehensive procedure for every indefinitely stuck loading screen. If status is up and the platform steps do not resolve your issue, contact Rockstar Support through the relevant guide. For a possible ISP or router issue, ask your ISP to check for an outage or connection problem and confirm router firmware guidance.
