Carrier phone credits are usually monthly discounts, not an upfront waiver of the phone’s price. You may still owe installments under a separate device payment agreement. If you cancel service, pay off the phone early, change plans, or upgrade, future credits can stop—and an unpaid device balance may become due. The result depends on the carrier, the specific offer, and whether you cancel one line or the whole account.
What a phone bill credit actually pays for
Keep three parts of the deal separate: the phone’s financing, the promotional credit, and your service plan. A carrier may charge an installment each month and apply a separate credit to your bill. While the promotion’s conditions are met, the credit reduces what you pay overall; it does not necessarily erase the installment obligation or make the phone free at purchase. When credits appear—and what to check if one is missing
Credits may not show on the first bill after you enroll. Verizon says they usually appear within one or two billing periods; AT&T says a credit usually appears on the next bill but can take up to two bill periods, depending on the offer; T-Mobile says some credits take up to two full bill cycles. What can happen if you leave before the credits end
Canceling service can stop future credits
Canceling a line commonly ends that line’s promotional credits. AT&T says cancellation can stop offer credits, and T-Mobile says canceling service generally ends monthly device credits. Verizon also lists cancellation among the reasons credits can stop. The exact rule is offer-specific, so verify it before canceling or transferring your number. AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon
The remaining device balance may become due
Stopping service and paying off the phone are separate issues. AT&T says the unpaid installment balance for a canceled linked line is due immediately and appears on the final bill. Verizon says cancellation can result in the remaining device balance being charged. The final amount depends on your remaining installments and agreement; do not calculate it from the promotion’s advertised value alone. AT&T, Verizon

Canceling one line can differ from closing the account
T-Mobile’s stated treatment distinguishes between canceling a line and canceling the full account: if other account lines remain, device payments tied to the canceled line may continue monthly; if the whole account is canceled, remaining device balances become due on the final bill. Check the applicable agreement rather than assuming this rule applies to another carrier or offer. T-Mobile

Some Verizon materials describe a possible chargeback of certain monthly service discounts if a customer leaves before the stated commitment term. Verizon’s FAQ describes a rolling maximum of six months of received discounts. Does paying off the phone early stop bill credits?
Not consistently. Verizon says promotional credits stop when the device is paid off, and AT&T says early payoff may stop discounts. T-Mobile says some eligible offers can continue their remaining credits as account-level credits after an early payoff. Other changes that can end a promotion
Cancellation is not the only risk. Carrier materials identify early upgrade, moving to an ineligible plan, and failing other offer conditions as possible reasons credits may stop. A multi-line or buy-one-get-one offer may also depend on a particular line or account staying active. Questions to answer before you cancel, switch, or pay off
- What is the unpaid installment balance today?
- How many promotional credits remain, and what amount is each one?
- Do credits stop if you pay off early, upgrade, change plans, transfer your number, or cancel a line?
- If you cancel one line but keep others, can its device installments continue?
- When will the final bill arrive, and could a separate service-discount chargeback apply?
- For a multi-line or buy-one-get-one promotion, which lines or account conditions must remain active?
Compare offers on more than the headline discount. Check total device installments, the total credits and how many billing periods they span, qualifying plan and line requirements, payoff and cancellation rules, whether credits transfer, and any separate repayment terms for a service commitment. Carrier offer pages explain general rules, but they cannot establish your account-specific payoff or remaining credits; use your signed agreement and account details.
