Green frames in an OBS-to-YouTube stream do not point to one universal fix. First find where the green appears; then check the encoder responsible for that output. If you use AMD AMF and see green blocks, the AMF FAQ’s specific advice is to set Coding Type to “Default.” That recommendation is for AMD AMF and for the green-block symptom it describes—not a general fix for every green-frame problem.
Find the first place the green appears
Compare the same section of your pre-recorded video at each stage. This is a practical way to isolate the problem, not an official green-frame diagnostic procedure.

- Check the OBS preview. Look at the media source or scene playing the video. If it is already green here, inspect the source file, media source, and playback path before changing stream settings.
- Make a short local OBS recording. If the preview looks clean but the recording is green, investigate the recording encoder, recording format, and playback application. A different player can help distinguish a playback issue from a damaged recording.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. If the OBS preview and local recording are clean but the YouTube preview is not, focus on the streaming encoder and stream configuration.
- Inspect the replay after the stream. Compare it with the preview. A clean preview but green replay points to an issue appearing later in the stream or replay path; it does not by itself identify the cause.
Before changing settings, note your OBS version, operating system, GPU, selected encoder, whether the output is SDR or HDR, and whether the issue affects recording, streaming, or both. Those details help keep a fix specific to the affected stage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

If you use AMD AMF
For green blocks, the AMD AMF Encoder project FAQ says: “Set Coding Type to ‘Default’.” Find Coding Type in the AMF encoder settings you are using, select Default, and test again. The FAQ’s wording is “green blocks,” so it may not describe every kind of green frame or artifact. Do not apply this setting to NVENC, Intel QSV, Apple VideoToolbox, or software encoding.

The FAQ also notes that AMF supports NV12 and that other color formats may need conversion, potentially causing poor performance or broken behavior. Treat that as a reason to check the format if relevant, not a license to copy historical driver or version instructions: the page is undated and includes legacy references. Confirm the available options in your current OBS and driver setup. Read the AMD AMF Encoder FAQ.
If you use another encoder
Do not change AMD-specific settings. OBS supports different hardware encoder families with different platform and hardware limits. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU load, while older-generation hardware encoders may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate; OBS advises current drivers for relevant GPU encoder families. These are compatibility and quality considerations, not evidence that a particular encoder causes green frames. Review OBS’s hardware-encoding guide.

Check general OBS settings and performance
OBS’s general quality and performance guidance can help rule out setup problems, but it does not establish these steps as green-frame cures.
- Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS describes it as a quick way to establish basic settings. Open Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard and follow the prompts. OBS Help Portal.
- For recording, check output mode and presets. OBS recommends Simple output mode and recording presets as general recording guidance. Review your recording encoder and format if the defect appears only in the local file.
- On Windows, try launching OBS as administrator if GPU overload is suspected. OBS says it can ask Windows to reserve GPU capacity for OBS, and recommends trying this before further GPU-overload troubleshooting. It is a performance check, not a confirmed green-frame repair. OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate only if resources are constrained. OBS says lowering output resolution can reduce encoder load and lowering frame rate reduces rendering and encoding work. Make one change at a time and retest so you can tell whether it affected the symptom.
Validate YouTube’s live-stream configuration
For YouTube RTMP or RTMPS streams, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, recommends CBR, recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, and says the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. For SDR, the specified color space is Rec. 709. These are configuration checks, not green-frame diagnoses; change them when your settings do not match the intended stream setup, not as arbitrary fixes.

Before the next event, test with representative audio and movement, then check YouTube’s stream health and messages. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
Keep HDR troubleshooting separate
Do not switch an SDR stream to HDR settings to try to fix unexplained green frames. YouTube’s HDR live workflow is conditional: it requires HEVC, 10-bit HDR, and a compatible HDR source and color configuration. OBS’s HDR setup guidance describes selecting hardware HEVC and the appropriate HDR profile and color settings. Use that workflow only when you intend to stream HDR and your source supports it. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Where to investigate first | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Green appears in the OBS preview | Media source, source file, scene, or playback path | Check the source and its playback before changing YouTube stream settings. |
| Preview is clean; local recording is green | Recording encoder, format, or playback application | Compare the file in another player and review the recording settings. |
| Preview and recording are clean; YouTube preview is green | Streaming encoder and stream configuration | Identify the selected encoder, then check applicable settings and YouTube’s stream health. |
| Only the replay is green | Stage between the live preview and replay | Compare the affected section and check YouTube’s messages; the replay alone does not establish the cause. |
| AMD AMF output has green blocks | AMF Coding Type | Set Coding Type to Default, then test again. The FAQ’s specific symptom is green blocks. |
| General stutter or overload accompanies the defect | OBS rendering and encoding load | Try the OBS performance checks above; they address load, not a confirmed green-frame cause. |
If the defect persists, capture the relevant OBS settings and a short sample, record which checkpoints show green, and seek help with those details. Avoid buying hardware based only on this symptom: the available guidance does not establish that a new GPU or other device is a general remedy.
