1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf a COROS watch records a broken GPS track, takes too long to find satellites, or shows implausible workout heart-rate data, start by checking the conditions around the sensor—not by assuming the watch is defective. For GPS, wait for acquisition, refresh satellite data if it may be stale, and choose a mode your model supports. For wrist heart rate, stabilize the fit, warm up, and make sure the sensor and skin are clean and dry. The steps below follow COROS support guidance and distinguish fixes you can try from cases where an external sensor or COROS support is the better next step.
First, identify which tracking problem you have
GPS and heart-rate readings come from different sensors and fail for different reasons. A track that starts late, cuts corners, or wanders near buildings points first to satellite acquisition or reception. A heart-rate trace that is missing, erratic, or rises and falls with your steps points first to wrist fit, sensor conditions, or the limits of optical sensing. If both are affected, work through the GPS and heart-rate checks separately; one symptom does not establish the cause of the other.

- GPS will not acquire before an activity: wait outdoors, check for a full or acquired signal, then consider satellite-data freshness and mode.
- GPS distance or route looks wrong: consider signal obstruction, reflections or refraction, and whether the route passed indoors.
- Workout heart rate is absent or jumps: stabilize the watch on your wrist, check for moisture or cold, and wait for the pre-workout reading to settle.
- Heart rate tracks running cadence: suspect movement-related interference, often called cadence lock or crossover, and improve fit stability.
These checks are based on COROS support instructions for GPS troubleshooting, possible causes of inaccurate heart-rate data, and getting more reliable heart-rate readings.

Fix GPS acquisition and poor tracks
Wait for a full signal before starting
- Go outdoors before starting the activity and give the watch a clear view of the sky where possible.
- On the activity screen, wait until the satellite indicator is solid or full, or the screen reports “Acquired.” A signal that is still searching is not a reliable cue to begin.
- After acquisition, stay in place for about another minute before starting. COROS recommends this additional settling time for the best results.
- If the watch does not acquire, remain outdoors and stationary while it continues searching. Starting while the signal is incomplete can leave the opening portion of the recorded route inaccurate or missing.
Tall buildings and heavy tree cover can block or weaken satellite reception. COROS also identifies refraction near large bodies of water as a potential source of discrepancies. A clear-sky acquisition in an open area is therefore a useful first check when a usual route produces an odd track, but a route through difficult surroundings may still record less accurately. See COROS’s GPS troubleshooting guidance.

Refresh satellite data after travel or a long gap
Satellite data gives the watch information about the satellites’ expected positions. COROS says the app transfers data covering the prior seven days when a paired device connects. After more than seven days without syncing, the watch may prompt for an update. If the watch has been unused or disconnected for an extended period—or acquisition has become unusually slow—sync it with the COROS app and check for a satellite-data update from the app’s Profile/device page. The exact labels or placement can change with app updates, so use the current device page rather than relying on an older screenshot or menu description.
COROS says stale or missing satellite data can make a position fix take two minutes or longer. Let the transfer and acquisition finish before starting the activity; moving away or beginning the workout while the watch is still searching can defeat the purpose of waiting. A long fix time after travel does not, on its own, prove a hardware fault.
Choose the satellite mode for the route and model
Available GPS modes depend on the COROS watch model. Check the settings actually offered on your watch; do not assume a menu path or mode listed for a different model applies. COROS’s mode guide recommends All Systems On for most scenarios on supported watches. It uses multiple satellite systems. For difficult reception—such as dense urban streets, deep canyons, or heavily forested terrain—Dual Frequency is an option on supported models, but it uses more battery power. Standard or single-system GPS is primarily a battery-saving choice and can be less accurate when signals are obstructed or refracted.

| Mode or choice | When it may make sense | Trade-off or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| All Systems On | COROS recommends it for most situations on models that support it. | Availability varies by model. See COROS’s GPS mode guide. |
| Dual Frequency | Consider it in challenging reception environments, including dense urban areas, deep canyons, or heavily forested terrain, when your watch offers it. | Uses more power; the sources do not establish a universal accuracy gain or battery-life figure for every model and route. |
| Standard or single-system GPS | Primarily a battery-saving choice where reception conditions are not difficult. | May be less accurate when signals are obstructed or refracted; available combinations vary by model. |
These are mode-selection recommendations, not a promise that changing modes will correct every track. If your watch lacks a mode named here, use the available settings and consult the model-aware COROS mode list.
Handle buildings and routes with difficult reception
If a run or ride enters a building, pause the activity while inside. COROS says that otherwise the watch continues searching for GPS, which may affect both distance and the recorded track. Resume after returning outdoors and allow the watch to reacquire if necessary. On a route that stays outside but passes among tall buildings, dense trees, or near a large body of water, keep in mind that the surroundings themselves can cause deviations; a setting change cannot ensure a perfect line in every environment.
What GPS accuracy claim means
COROS states: “Under normal conditions with a strong signal, wearable GPS devices are accurate within 3 meters (10 feet) of your actual location.” This is COROS’s stated figure, published on its GPS troubleshooting page updated September 28, 2026; it is conditional on normal conditions and a strong signal, not a guarantee for every watch, route, or recording. COROS specifically identifies heavy tree cover, tall buildings, and refraction near large bodies of water as conditions that can contribute to differences in distance, pace, or track shape. A track outside that stated condition cannot be judged against the figure as if reception were ideal.

Fix inaccurate or missing wrist heart-rate readings
Stabilize the fit and sensor contact
- Wear the watch snugly enough that it does not slide during movement, but not so tight that it is uncomfortable or restricts circulation.
- Try positioning it above the wrist bone, where the surface may be flatter. The right position can vary by wrist, so use stable contact rather than treating one exact gap as universal.
- Clean and dry both the optical sensor on the back of the watch and the skin beneath it. Sweat or water trapped between them can interfere with readings and may let the watch move.
- Before starting the workout, look at the activity start screen and wait for the heart symbol or displayed reading to stabilize.
Optical wrist heart rate is an estimate, not a direct measurement equivalent to every external sensor. Loose contact lets the watch shift; excessive tightness is not the solution. COROS’s advice on fit and reading stability is in its accurate-reading guide.
Account for cold, moisture, and individual differences
Cold hands and reduced blood flow can weaken the optical signal. Warm your hands and warm up before a cold-weather workout rather than expecting a cold-start reading to behave like one obtained after you are moving. If readings remain poor in ordinary conditions, check that the sensor and the skin are clean and dry and that the watch is not sliding.
Tattoos beneath the sensor can interfere; trying the other wrist is a practical test. Hair, skin characteristics, differences in blood vessels, and individual physiology may also affect a reading. COROS discusses variation in how optical signals are absorbed, but that does not support predicting an individual watch’s accuracy from skin tone alone. If changing wrist position or improving contact changes the result, that is useful troubleshooting evidence, not proof that the watch is faulty.

Recognize cadence lock and workout-specific delays
If the displayed heart rate rises and falls in step with running cadence rather than reflecting how the effort feels, the reading may be affected by cadence lock or crossover. Movement can make optical readings less reliable. Improve the watch’s stability with a snug fit; COROS notes that a nylon band may reduce movement. For interval sessions, COROS recommends using the interval mode’s more responsive heart-rate algorithm. Wait for the reading to settle before beginning the session, and avoid interpreting an unstable opening reading as a settled workout value.
No single fit adjustment or algorithm setting can eliminate every source of optical error. COROS lists movement, cold, sweat or water, tattoos or hair, and individual physiology among factors that may contribute to inaccurate readings. See COROS’s explanation of heart-rate inaccuracy.
Wrist optical sensing or an external heart-rate strap?
For everyday training, the wrist sensor avoids wearing another device. When accurate workout heart rate is important—especially for heart-rate-based training—COROS recommends considering an external chest strap or armband. Its guidance says chest straps usually provide better accuracy than wrist-based solutions, but it does not establish a universal, quantified performance difference across all watches, people, workouts, or straps.

| Option | Best fit | Limits to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Wrist optical sensor | Convenience and workouts where an estimate from the watch is sufficient. | Readings can be affected by fit, movement, cold, moisture, tattoos or hair, and individual physiology. |
| Compatible external chest strap or armband | Training where dependable heart-rate readings are important, including heart-rate-based training. | Check that the exact sensor’s connection protocol and the exact COROS watch are compatible. COROS guidance supports ANT+ or Bluetooth options but does not verify every model-and-sensor pairing. |
If you are choosing an external sensor, verify compatibility for your specific watch and the sensor before buying or relying on it. Do not infer compatibility merely because both products mention ANT+ or Bluetooth: the precise device pairing still needs to be supported. COROS’s recommendations are described in its heart-rate accuracy guidance and inaccuracy article.
Resolve an “AGPS verification failed” app error
If the COROS app reports “AGPS verification failed” while updating satellite data, COROS suggests checking the phone’s connection and VPN before resetting the watch:
- Disable any VPN on the phone temporarily and retry the satellite-data update.
- Switch the phone’s network from Wi-Fi to cellular, or from cellular to Wi-Fi, and try again.
- If you use an iPhone, clear Safari history and website data, then retry.
- If those steps do not work, restart the watch and app, then sync the watch with the app before considering a reset.
- As a later step, use the watch path System > More Settings > Reset > Reset All. COROS says this reset does not delete data saved in the COROS app/account.
A reset is more disruptive than changing the phone network or disabling a VPN, so reserve it for after the simpler checks and sync first. Menu labels can vary by model or software version. The error-specific steps come from the COROS GPS troubleshooting article.
When to contact COROS support
Escalate if GPS problems persist after allowing acquisition, syncing current satellite data, selecting an available appropriate mode, and accounting for the route environment. For continued heart-rate problems after checking fit, cleanliness, temperature, and movement, send feedback through the app’s support flow. Use the app path Profile > Customer Support > Contact Support to submit GPS details. Include the watch model, activity type, approximate location or route conditions, whether the watch acquired before starting, the selected GPS mode if known, and what troubleshooting steps you already tried. For a heart-rate issue, describe the conditions, fit position, whether the reading was missing or implausible, and whether it tracked cadence. Specific observations help support understand the failure without treating an environmental limitation as a confirmed hardware defect.
Quick Recap
Quick troubleshooting sequence
- Before a GPS activity: go outdoors, wait for a full or acquired signal, then give it another minute to settle.
- If acquisition is unusually slow: sync with the COROS app and check for an update to satellite data, especially after travel or more than seven days without syncing.
- If the route is difficult: use All Systems On for most supported situations; consider Dual Frequency only if your model supports it and the reception environment is challenging, accounting for its higher power use.
- For a distorted route: consider buildings, tree cover, water-related refraction, and pause while indoors.
- For heart rate: keep the watch stable above the wrist bone, clean and dry, warm up in cold conditions, and wait for the start-screen reading to settle.
- If wrist readings are critical for training: verify compatibility and consider an external ANT+ or Bluetooth chest strap or armband.
- If the issue remains: submit details through the in-app COROS support flow.
