If Google TV voice search stops responding, begin with the reversible checks: hold the remote’s Assistant/Mic button while speaking, replace or reseat the batteries, inspect the LED, and reboot the streaming device. If navigation still works but voice does not, use a phone as a temporary remote to forget and re-pair the physical remote. Reset the remote only with the procedure for its model—Google TV Streamer Voice Remote and Chromecast Voice Remote use different combinations. Leave a full streaming-device factory reset until every remote and pairing step has failed.
This procedure applies to Google TV Streamer (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV voice remotes, not every television that happens to use the Google TV interface.

Confirm what should happen when voice search is working
On both supported remote families, Google Assistant starts when you press and hold the Assistant/Mic button and speak. You do not need to say “Hey Google” first. Try a simple request such as “What should I watch?” or “Find funny movies.” Google describes this operation for the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote in its remote feature guide.
Keep holding the button while you say the request, then release it and wait for the result on screen. If the interface responds to navigation buttons but nothing happens after a correctly held microphone button, you have a voice-input problem rather than a completely dead remote. If no buttons control the interface, follow the power, Bluetooth and pairing path below instead of treating the microphone as an isolated failure.

Identify the device and remote generation first
The reset sequence depends on whether the remote is paired with a Google TV Streamer (4K) or with Chromecast with Google TV. Do not transfer the Chromecast button sequence to a Streamer remote, or vice versa. Use the device name shown during setup or in its system information, and use the instructions under that device in the sections below.
Quick symptom triage before changing anything
Spend a few seconds classifying the failure. If the home screen, menus and app selection all respond, the remote has power and a control connection; concentrate on the Assistant/Mic button, its LED state and the voice path. If navigation is intermittent or absent, treat the issue as a power, Bluetooth or pairing problem first. If only television volume or power fails, that is a separate control path: Google notes that those commands can use infrared (IR), while streaming-interface navigation uses Bluetooth. A television-control failure does not by itself show that the microphone is bad.
Also note the remote generation before you remove batteries or hold buttons. The Google TV Streamer Voice Remote and Chromecast Voice Remote can look similar enough to confuse the reset instructions, yet their factory-reset sequences are different. Write down whether the LED flashes, pulses or stays solid and whether the device displays any pairing prompt. These observations make it easier to repeat the right step instead of cycling through incompatible button combinations.

| Stage | What it checks | Disruption | When to move on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Batteries and LED | Power, battery contact and basic remote status | None; reversible | There is no expected LED response, or voice still fails after fresh batteries |
| Streaming-device reboot | Temporary software or Bluetooth state | Brief interruption; settings remain | The device restarts but the microphone still produces no response |
| Phone virtual remote | Access to pairing menus when the physical remote is unreliable | None to the device | You need to forget, reset or pair the physical remote |
| Remote reset | Corrupt pairing or remote state | Clears remote data and cannot be undone | Only after battery, reboot and pairing checks |
| Streaming-device factory reset | Persistent device-level failure | Highest impact; separate from remote reset | Last resort after Google’s remote procedure is complete |
This order matters. A battery change or reboot is easy to reverse, while forgetting a remote interrupts its Bluetooth relationship and a remote reset erases its stored data. A device factory reset affects the streamer or Chromecast itself, so it belongs at the end rather than as a first reaction to a silent microphone.
1. Check batteries, contacts and LED activity
Remove and reinstall the batteries, then watch the remote’s LED. Google’s general troubleshooting flow expects two quick flashes when batteries are inserted. If the LED does not flash, remove the batteries for five minutes and try again. If there is still no activity, replace them with the original type or two fresh 1.5-volt AAA batteries, as specified in Google’s voice-remote troubleshooting instructions.
After the battery check, press a navigation button and then hold the Assistant/Mic button while speaking. Fresh batteries restore power and contact; they are not a guaranteed microphone repair. A remote can light up and control menus while its microphone function or pairing state remains faulty.
Install both cells in the marked orientation and reseat them firmly. If the LED reacts only after you remove and reinstall a cell, suspect contact or battery condition before assuming the microphone hardware has failed. Do not buy a replacement remote solely because an old battery set produced no light; Google specifically includes fresh AAA cells in its troubleshooting path.

LED behavior indicates state, not whether speech recognition understood you. The official LED table identifies a solid light on the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote as “The microphone is on.” On a Chromecast Voice Remote, a solid LED can mean the microphone is on or that a firmware update is being applied; the microphone is not open during an update. A solid light therefore does not prove that your words reached Google Assistant. See Google’s complete LED-state table for the model-specific meanings.
Other patterns are useful only when matched to the correct generation. Google distinguishes two quick flashes after battery installation, a slow pulse for ready-to-pair status, a fast pulse during a Streamer-remote pairing attempt and two quick blinks after Streamer pairing succeeds. These signals help you decide whether the remote has power or is waiting for a connection; they are not a speech-recognition score. Never carry an LED interpretation from one remote family to the other without checking the table.
2. Reboot the Google TV device
Google places a reboot of Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer at the start of the “Voice Remote doesn’t work at all” procedure. Use the device’s on-screen restart command. If the physical remote cannot reach that command, set up the phone virtual remote described in the next section and use it to navigate.

Once the home screen returns, test voice search again with the Assistant/Mic button. A reboot can clear a temporary software or Bluetooth state without changing your accounts, apps or remote data. If navigation is available but voice remains silent after the restart, continue rather than repeatedly rebooting.

3. Use a phone as a temporary remote
A phone can provide enough control to reach pairing settings when the physical remote is unreliable. Follow Google’s instructions for setting up the phone as a virtual remote, then use this exact path:
- Open Settings on the Google TV device.
- Select Remotes & Accessories.
- Select the listed Voice Remote.
- Choose Forget and confirm.
Forgetting removes the current Bluetooth relationship so that you can perform a clean pairing. It is not the same as factory-resetting the streaming device. Keep the phone remote available until the physical remote has paired and successfully completes a voice search.
Do not discard the phone control after the first pairing screen appears. You may need it to choose Pair remote or accessory, confirm an on-screen code or retry the process if automatic pairing fails. The phone is a navigation backup, not a replacement microphone: use the physical remote for the final voice test.
4. Reset the physical remote with the correct model procedure
Google states that a remote factory reset returns the Chromecast or Google TV Streamer Voice Remote to its default factory settings. The reset clears the remote’s data and cannot be undone, so perform it only after the battery, reboot and forget steps. Use one of these two procedures, not a combination.

Google TV Streamer Voice Remote
- Press and hold Mute and the center Select button at the same time.
- Continue holding until the LED becomes solid white. Google says initiating this reset usually takes no more than 12 seconds.
- Release the buttons when the reset indication appears, then proceed to pairing.
This procedure is for the Voice Remote supplied for Google TV Streamer (4K). The same remote is also supported with Chromecast with Google TV, but the device shown on screen still determines which pairing instructions you should follow.
Chromecast Voice Remote
- Remove the batteries and wait five minutes.
- Reinsert the batteries while holding the Home button.
- Keep holding Home while the LED is solid.
- Release Home when the LED begins to pulse.
If the light does not reach the stated state, remove the batteries and repeat the sequence carefully. Do not substitute the Streamer remote’s Mute-and-Select combination for this procedure.
A reset is not a harmless microphone toggle. It clears remote data and cannot be undone, so expect to pair the remote again afterward. If you reset before confirming the device model, you can create an avoidable pairing problem while the original voice issue remains.
5. Pair the remote again
After a reset or a forgotten pairing, the remote may reconnect automatically. If it does not, hold Back and Home together. Google’s Google TV Streamer setup instructions specify holding these buttons until the light pulses when the screen displays “Start pairing.”

For a Chromecast Voice Remote, Google’s troubleshooting page describes a three-second Back-and-Home hold for re-pairing. If automatic pairing fails, use the phone remote to open Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Pair remote or accessory, then follow the on-screen instructions in Google’s troubleshooting guide.

LED patterns are generation-specific: the LED guide distinguishes a slow pulse for ready-to-pair, a fast pulse during a Streamer-remote pairing attempt, and two quick blinks when pairing succeeds. Do not assume that a pattern documented for one generation has the same meaning on the other. After the pairing confirmation, hold Assistant/Mic and repeat a voice search before putting the phone remote away.
If pairing succeeds but voice still fails, test navigation first, then repeat the held-button voice test. A successful Bluetooth pairing proves that the remote can communicate; it does not guarantee that the microphone path is functioning. Keep the exact LED behavior and device model noted if you need further support.
6. Reserve a streaming-device factory reset for last
Google’s troubleshooting flow places a Chromecast with Google TV factory reset after remote checks and pairing attempts. A streaming-device reset is a separate, higher-impact operation from resetting the remote: it changes the device itself, whereas the remote reset clears remote data. Do not start with the device reset merely because voice search failed. Complete the model-specific remote reset and re-pairing steps first, and use the phone remote to reach device controls if necessary.

Match the symptom to the likely fault
Navigation works, but voice search does not
This pattern narrows the problem to microphone activation, remote software, the Bluetooth voice path or the voice feature itself. Verify that you are holding Assistant/Mic rather than tapping it, and that you are speaking while the button is held. Check the LED state, reboot, forget the remote and perform the correct model reset before considering replacement. Google’s reviewed troubleshooting procedure does not provide a definitive microphone diagnostic or promise that any one of these steps will restore speech recognition.
No remote buttons control the Google TV interface
Treat this as a broader power, Bluetooth or pairing failure. Start with the battery and LED checks, reboot the device, use the phone remote to forget the listed Voice Remote, then reset and pair the physical remote. Testing the microphone before navigation has been restored can give a misleading result because the device may not be receiving any remote input.
Only the television’s power or volume buttons fail
If navigation still controls the streaming interface but TV power or volume does not, Google notes that the television commands may use infrared (IR), while navigation uses the remote’s Bluetooth connection. That points to an IR configuration or signal issue rather than proof that the remote microphone is defective. Continue to use the voice and navigation tests separately.
The LED is solid during a Chromecast update
On a Chromecast Voice Remote, a solid LED can indicate firmware installation. Google says the microphone is not open during that update. Wait for the update state to finish before judging voice search, then test the Assistant/Mic button again. A solid LED alone cannot distinguish update activity from an active microphone on this remote generation.
The microphone works once, then stops again
Repeat the test after a reboot and observe whether the LED and navigation remain consistent. Intermittent behavior still warrants the same ordered checks; do not jump directly to a device factory reset or assume that a single successful search proves the remote is healthy.

| Option | Use it when | Compatibility or limitation |

Replacing a remote without checking compatibility can leave you with working navigation but no supported microphone behavior. If a new set of batteries and a correctly paired, compatible remote still cannot activate voice search while the device is otherwise healthy, the remaining fault may be in the remote hardware or the streaming device’s voice software; Google does not publish a failure rate or a guaranteed repair outcome.
Verify the repair without creating a new variable
- Use the physical remote to move through the Google TV interface, confirming the Bluetooth connection is stable.
- Press and hold Assistant/Mic and say one short request, such as “What should I watch?” Do not add “Hey Google.”
- Release the button and watch for an on-screen response.
- Repeat once with a different request, such as “Find funny movies,” to distinguish a one-off recognition error from a persistent microphone problem.
- Only after both tests work should you remove the phone virtual remote or begin changing other device settings.
If the LED indicates microphone activity but neither request produces a result, record the remote generation, LED behavior and whether navigation works. Those details identify the correct support path more reliably than describing the remote as simply “dead.”
Key points to remember
- Voice input starts by holding Assistant/Mic; “Hey Google” is unnecessary through the remote.
- Battery checks, LED observation and a device reboot are free and reversible, so do them before any reset.
- Google TV Streamer and Chromecast Voice Remotes have different factory-reset procedures.
- A phone virtual remote can reach Settings > Remotes & Accessories when the physical remote cannot.
- Remote reset clears remote data; a streaming-device factory reset is a separate, later action.
- For replacement hardware, confirm compatibility with Google TV Streamer (4K) or Chromecast with Google TV before buying.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to say “Hey Google” before using the remote microphone?
No. Press and hold the Assistant/Mic button, speak your request, then release it. Google documents searches such as “What should I watch?” and “Find funny movies.”
What do two quick LED flashes mean?
Google’s LED guide uses two quick flashes after battery installation. LED meanings vary by remote generation, so use the model-specific table for pairing and microphone states.
Can I fix voice search with a phone?
A phone can act as a temporary virtual remote so you can open Settings > Remotes & Accessories, forget the Voice Remote and choose Pair remote or accessory. The physical remote is still needed for the final microphone test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs resetting the remote the same as resetting Chromecast?
No. A remote factory reset clears the remote’s data and cannot be undone. A streaming-device factory reset affects the Chromecast or Google TV Streamer and is a separate, higher-impact last resort.
Which reset buttons work on a Google TV Streamer Voice Remote?
Hold Mute and the center Select button together until the LED becomes solid white; Google says initiation usually takes no more than 12 seconds.
Which reset buttons work on a Chromecast Voice Remote?
Remove the batteries for five minutes, reinsert them while holding Home, keep holding while the LED is solid, and release when it begins to pulse.
Why does navigation work when voice search does not?
Navigation can remain functional while microphone activation, remote software, the Bluetooth voice path or the voice feature has a problem. Check the held-button operation, batteries, LED, reboot, forgetting and model-specific reset sequence.
What replacement remote is compatible?
Google lists the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote as compatible with Google TV Streamer (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV. Verify your exact device before purchasing.
The Bottom Line
Hold Assistant/Mic while speaking, then work from batteries and LED checks to a reboot, phone-assisted forgetting, the correct model-specific remote reset and re-pairing. Keep a streaming-device factory reset as the final step, and verify compatibility before buying a replacement.
