An active navigation notice may remain until navigation ends; a recurring traffic alert or location-sharing update needs a different setting. Start with the matching control rather than disabling every Maps notification or changing location permissions indiscriminately.
Identify the notification before trying to remove it
Read the full notification and note when it appears. Does it show an active route, report traffic while Maps is closed, mention someone’s shared location, or prompt you about another Maps feature? That wording is the best clue to which control applies.

Also distinguish a notice that stays on screen from one that disappears and later returns. A notification connected to an ongoing task may not be dismissible until that task ends. A recurring alert, by contrast, may be generated again because its category or feature remains enabled. The same swipe-resistant appearance does not prove that the app is malfunctioning.
- Active route or navigation: check whether navigation is still running in Maps.
- Traffic update while Maps is not in use: check the specific traffic-notification setting and its prerequisites.
- Location-sharing update: decide whether you want to stop the alert or preserve location refreshes.
- Another unwanted Maps alert: look for its category in Maps’ notification settings.
- Notification with no apparent active task or matching category: try Android’s app-level notification controls, then general app troubleshooting if necessary.
A useful way to choose a fix is to ask two questions: is the notification reporting something currently happening, and do you want to stop only the alert or stop the underlying feature too? If navigation is in progress, ending the task is different from disabling a category. If an alert is unwanted but the feature is useful, turning off just its category may be a better fit than silencing all of Maps. For location sharing, turning off notifications has a separate consequence: the shared location may stop refreshing.

Dismiss a notification tied to active navigation
Android notes that some notifications can be cleared only when their associated task is finished. If the notification shows a route or active directions, open Maps and check whether that navigation task is still underway. If it is, end or complete the navigation in Maps, then check whether the notification clears.
- Tap the navigation notification or open Maps.
- Check whether Maps is still guiding you along an active route.
- If you no longer need that route, end the navigation in Maps. If you are still using it, let the task continue.
- After navigation has ended, check the notification again.
This is a first check for a navigation notice, not a universal diagnosis. If the notification does not indicate active navigation, or it remains after the task has ended, use the steps for its actual category instead.
Do not treat a notice as stuck just because a swipe does not remove it while a task is active. Android’s guidance is that some notifications clear only when the associated task is done; it gives a music player notice as an example. That rule makes an ongoing task worth checking, but it does not prove that every persistent Maps notification is a navigation notice. Read the text and open Maps to confirm what is actually running.
If you are still following directions, the right choice may be to leave the notification alone until you arrive or stop the route. If you have finished, end navigation in Maps rather than repeatedly swiping the notification or changing unrelated notification settings. If it remains after you have ended the route, move on to the matching category or Android controls below.
Turn off only the unwanted Maps notification category
For an alert you do not want to receive, Maps provides in-app notification controls. Google’s documented route is to open Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, select Settings, then Notifications, and turn off the category that matches the alert. The available categories and their labels can change, so match the setting to the notification text rather than looking for a category name that may not appear on your version.
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings, then Notifications.
- Find the category corresponding to the alert you want to stop and switch that category off.
Changing one category is preferable when you want to stop a particular kind of prompt but keep other Maps notifications. If you cannot find a matching category, Android’s notification settings may offer another way to manage the app or an individual category.
When checking the list, compare the notification’s wording and purpose with the category names available in your version of Maps. The categories and labels can change, so the exact name may not match an older set of instructions. Do not switch off a vaguely similar category just to test it if doing so could silence a kind of update you still want. If you cannot confidently identify a match, use the notification’s Android settings route or gather the exact wording and device details before making broader changes.
Turning off an in-app category is a choice about future alerts from that category, not a way to end a navigation task that is still running. Conversely, ending a route does not necessarily turn off a separate traffic or other alert category. Treat these as separate controls: finish an ongoing task when appropriate, and change a category only when you want to stop that type of notification.

Use Android settings when the Maps control is not enough
Android lets you manage notifications for an app and, on supported devices, individual notification categories. The exact menu names and path vary by phone, Android version, and manufacturer. One common route is to open the phone’s Settings, find Notifications or Apps, select Google Maps, and review its notification controls. Treat those labels as examples, not a guaranteed path on every device.
On supported phones, you can also touch and hold the notification and use the control that opens its notification settings. This can take you directly to the relevant app or category controls. From there, switch off only the category you do not want, if that option is available. Turning off all Maps notifications is broader: it can also hide notices you might want to keep.
If the Android settings page shows a category but Maps’ in-app settings do not, use the controls your device actually provides. Conversely, if the phone offers only an app-wide switch, consider whether you are willing to silence all Maps notifications before changing it.
Recommended Free Tools
These two levels of control serve different needs. Maps’ own notification page lets you choose among the categories Maps exposes there. Android’s app settings let you manage notifications for Maps at the device level and may expose individual categories as well. Neither menu has an identical path on every phone, so follow the labels visible on your device instead of assuming a particular menu sequence must be present.
To reach the relevant Android control quickly, touch and hold the alert if your phone supports that shortcut, then open its notification settings. Check whether the page offers a switch for the particular category or only one for the whole app. If it offers a category switch, that is the narrower option. If it offers only an app-wide switch, pause before using it: it may silence Maps notices beyond the one that prompted you to make the change.
Android’s controls can stop notifications from appearing, but they do not necessarily resolve why a task-related notice remains visible. If the alert says navigation is active, check the route in Maps first. If it is an unwanted recurring alert, change its matching category. The Android-level option is most useful when you know which app or category you want to silence but cannot manage it from Maps’ own settings.
Handle traffic updates that arrive when Maps is not in use
If the notice is specifically a traffic update while you are not using Maps, check the feature’s own control in Maps’ notification settings. Google identifies a setting called Traffic updates when not using Maps. The feature also depends on location permission and physical activity permission, and Google says it is available only in certain countries and regions.

- Look in Maps’ Settings > Notifications for Traffic updates when not using Maps.
- If you want the updates, check that the permissions Google lists for the feature—location and physical activity—are enabled as required on your device.
- If you do not want the updates, turn off the specific traffic-notification setting if it is available rather than changing unrelated permissions.
Do not turn off location access as a catch-all fix for an unspecified Maps notification. Permissions support particular features; changing them without identifying the alert can affect functionality without addressing its cause. Regional availability also means the feature or its controls may not be present for every user.
This creates a simple decision: if you want traffic updates when Maps is not in use, check the feature’s prerequisites; if you do not want those alerts, turn off that specific setting where it is offered. Changing location or physical activity permissions is relevant to this feature only when you are checking whether it can work as intended. It is not a general method for clearing any persistent Maps notice.
If you cannot find the traffic setting, do not assume that your phone is broken. Google says the feature is available only in certain countries and regions, and settings may also differ. Confirm first that the notification really is a traffic update received while Maps is not in use. If it is another type of alert, return to the category that matches its text rather than changing traffic permissions or settings.
Understand the effect of silencing location-sharing updates
If the notification is about Google Location Sharing, consider what the alert is connected to before switching it off. Google warns: “If you turn these notifications off, your shared location doesn’t refresh and can become inaccurate.” In other words, this change can affect the freshness of the shared location, not just whether an alert appears.
If maintaining an updated shared location matters, do not disable its notifications without considering that consequence. If you do not need the location to keep refreshing, you can decide whether the notification trade-off is acceptable. Avoid changing general location permission as a substitute for identifying and managing the specific location-sharing notification.
The choice here is not simply “notification on” versus “notification off.” Consider whether the people relying on your shared location need it to remain current. If they do, preserve the refresh behavior and look for a different way to manage unwanted alerts. If you are comfortable with the shared location no longer refreshing and potentially becoming inaccurate, you can weigh that trade-off before switching notifications off.
This warning is specific to Google Location Sharing notifications. It is not a reason to disable location access for all Maps activity, and it should not be applied to unrelated traffic or navigation notices. Match the control to the exact notification and consider the function that would change along with the alert.

Try general app troubleshooting only if the notification seems stuck
If the notice does not match an active task or a setting you can change, and ordinary notification controls do not resolve it, try Google’s general Android app-troubleshooting sequence. These steps are not a guaranteed fix for every Maps notification; they are reasonable checks when the app itself appears to be misbehaving.

- Restart the phone. Then check whether the same notification is still present or returns.
- Update Maps. If an update is available, install it and check the notification again.
- Force stop Maps. Android’s app settings commonly provide this option under the app’s information page, though the path and wording vary. Reopen Maps afterward and see whether the issue persists.
- Clear the app cache. Look for the storage controls on Maps’ app information page. Cache and storage labels differ across phones; choose the cache option rather than clearing app data if you are trying a lower-impact step.
- Consider clearing app data only as a later step. Google includes clearing data among general troubleshooting options, but this can erase app data. Check what may be removed and whether you are prepared for that consequence before proceeding.
Clearing data is not simply another notification toggle, and it should not be the first response to a single unwanted alert. If the alert is caused by an ongoing navigation task or an enabled notification category, address that cause rather than using storage controls.
Use these troubleshooting steps in order, checking the notification after each one rather than immediately moving to the most disruptive option. A restart and an update are initial checks; force stop and clearing the cache come later if the problem continues. Clearing app data is a further step because it can erase app data. Google’s guidance is general Android app troubleshooting, not a promise that any one step will clear every Maps notification.
Before clearing data, distinguish it from clearing the cache. The cache option is the lower-impact choice listed here; clearing data can remove app data, so it deserves a separate decision. Check what may be erased on your device and proceed only if you understand the consequence. If the notification is still explained by active navigation or a category that remains enabled, storage troubleshooting is unlikely to be the right first move.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAfter each troubleshooting step, check whether the original notice is gone, whether it returns, and whether its wording has changed. That observation helps separate a notification that is being generated again by an enabled feature from one that remains despite the task ending and settings being adjusted. Do not infer a cause from persistence alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the notification still will not go away
There is no single documented fix that covers every Google Maps notification. The right next step depends on the notification’s wording, the phone’s available controls, and whether a related task or feature remains active. Before trying more invasive changes, record the exact notification text, phone model, Android version, and whether navigation or location sharing is active. Those details help narrow down whether the issue is a task that has not ended, a category setting, or a device-specific app problem.
Keep the next attempt narrow: revisit the notification’s matching Maps category or Android category, and confirm that navigation has actually ended if the notice was route-related. If you cannot identify the category or your phone does not expose the expected control, the device’s notification menus may use different labels or organization. Avoid repeatedly changing unrelated permissions or clearing data without a clear reason.
When describing the issue to someone helping you troubleshoot, include what the notification says, whether it stays continuously or disappears and returns, and what you already tried. Add your phone model and Android version, and say whether navigation or location sharing is active. Those are the details that help distinguish a task notification from a category setting or an app problem; the visible symptom by itself is not enough to identify the cause.
If the alert is gone but later returns, focus on the feature or category that is generating it rather than treating it only as a dismissal problem. If it remains after you end the associated task and review its matching category, use the Android controls available on your phone and then the general troubleshooting steps. Because paths vary and there is no universal fix, avoid broad permission changes or clearing app data unless you have a specific reason and understand the effect.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I swipe away a Google Maps navigation notification?
It may be tied to an active task. Android says some notifications can be cleared only when their associated task is done. Open Maps, check whether navigation is still running, and end or complete it if appropriate. This is a useful first check, not proof that every persistent Maps alert is caused by navigation.
How do I stop just one type of Google Maps notification?
In Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, then go to Settings > Notifications and turn off the category that matches the alert. Category names can change. Android settings may also offer app-level or category-level controls, depending on your phone.
Should I turn off location permission to stop Maps notifications?
Not as a general fix. Location and physical activity permissions are prerequisites for the specific traffic-updates-when-not-using-Maps feature. For an unwanted alert, first identify its type and change the matching notification category or setting.

Google warns that the shared location will not refresh and can become inaccurate. Consider whether keeping the shared location current matters before turning those notifications off.
What should I do if the notification remains after I end navigation and change its category?
Check Android’s notification settings for Google Maps or the relevant category; paths and labels vary by phone. If the app seems to be malfunctioning, try restarting and updating, then force stopping or clearing the cache. Clear app data only later and with care, because it can erase app data.
Why can’t I find the traffic updates setting?
Google says traffic updates when Maps is not in use are available only in certain countries and regions, and notification labels can vary. First confirm that the alert is actually this type of traffic update; do not change unrelated permissions if it is another Maps notification.
The Bottom Line
Read the notification first, then match the fix to what it describes: end active navigation, turn off only an unwanted category, or review the specific traffic or location-sharing controls and their consequences. Android settings and labels vary by device. If the alert still appears, use general troubleshooting carefully—especially before clearing app data—and note its exact text, phone model, Android version, and whether navigation or location sharing is active.
