How Accurate Are Predicted Setlists, and How Often Do They Change?

Setlist predictions can reveal recurring songs, but no universal accuracy rate or change frequency is established. Learn how to evaluate a forecast for a specific show.

Predicted setlists are informed estimates, not promises. They are more useful when an artist repeats songs across recent shows and the latest performances are recorded; they are less dependable when the artist rotates songs or the available records are incomplete. There is no established universal accuracy percentage or reliable rate for how often setlists change. To judge a forecast, compare several recent shows from the same tour and check what the forecast means by “accurate.”

What a predicted setlist can—and cannot—tell you

A setlist prediction is a forecast built from previous performances. Its strength depends on the pattern in those performances and on whether the source records reflect what happened recently. If a song appears consistently in a tour’s recent shows, its recurrence is evidence that it may appear again. It is not a guarantee. A song that appears only sometimes is a less certain pick, even if it is included in a forecast.

That distinction matters because a prediction can be useful without being exact. It may identify likely songs while missing a rotation, a change in order, an encore, or one or more tracks. A displayed score may count only whether predicted songs were played; it may not assess the complete sequence or every part of the concert. Before treating a score as a measure of “how accurate” a setlist is, find out what it counts.

No source cited here establishes one accuracy figure that applies across artists, tours, or prediction services. Nor is there a representative figure for how often setlists change. A percentage without a defined sample and scoring method would conceal important differences: artists do not all perform with the same consistency, prediction tools may use different data, and “a correct prediction” can mean different things.

How setlist predictions are made

Song-frequency forecasts

ConcertPrep describes its percentages as how often a band played each song across shows on its current tour, with the most recent nights weighted more heavily. In other words, the percentage summarizes a pattern in past setlists; it is not a guarantee that the song will be performed at the next concert. ConcertPrep says its method examines up to the last 50 setlists on setlist.fm and identifies the current tour by looking backward from the latest show until it finds a gap of more than 42 days. Those are ConcertPrep’s stated selection rules on its undated methodology page, accessed in 2026—not standard rules used by every predictor, nor evidence of a particular accuracy rate.

The service describes the calculation this way: “Every percentage is how often the band has played that song across the nights of their current tour, counting the most recent nights most.” This is ConcertPrep’s account of its own method. A reader can use it to understand what its percentages represent, but it does not establish that those percentages are independently validated probabilities for the next show.

Pattern-ranking predictions

Nexet says it fetches recent setlists from setlist.fm and uses an AI model to identify patterns and rank likely songs. Its completed predictions display an accuracy score based on how many predicted songs were performed. Nexet also cautions that its score depends on artist consistency and up-to-date source data. The available description does not establish that this scoring method has been independently validated or that its score can be compared directly with another service’s.

These approaches illustrate why two forecasts can look different without either being demonstrably better: one may show recency-weighted song frequencies, while another ranks songs using a model and reports a score with its own definition. The underlying records, the treatment of recent shows, and the meaning of the score all affect what a reader can reasonably infer.

Why forecasts miss and why records can lag

Past repetition helps identify songs that appear reliably, while intermittent appearances suggest a song may rotate. Neither pattern fixes the next concert’s setlist. A forecast that extrapolates from previous shows can therefore be plausible and still miss what happens on a particular night. The sources describing these methods do not provide a representative change rate across artists or tours, so they cannot tell you that a setlist changes, for example, a particular fraction of the time.

There is a second uncertainty: the record may not yet be complete. Setlist.fm is a collaborative database of actual performances, and its entries can be edited when incomplete or incorrect. The site asks editors to provide a source. If a recent concert has not been entered or corrected, a prediction based on the database may not reflect the latest performance pattern. This is a data-freshness issue, not proof that the artist changed the setlist.

Setlist.fm’s editing guidelines also distinguish a record of a performance from a guess about one. They state: “Assumed setlists, e.g. based on other concerts of the same tour are not allowed either.” Entries should represent actual shows, and edits need a source. This policy is useful context: a blank or missing recent entry should not be treated as evidence that a predicted list is confirmed.

How to judge a forecast for an upcoming concert

  1. Match the artist and tour. Start with recent shows by the same artist on the current tour. Older performances or a general “typical setlist” may show historical habits, but they are not as direct a comparison for the upcoming date.
  2. Compare more than one recent show. Look for songs that recur across several performances and separate them from songs that appear intermittently. Repeated appearances are stronger evidence of a stable pattern; sporadic appearances indicate uncertainty. Neither category guarantees what will happen next.
  3. Check the dates and coverage of the records. Find the latest performances represented in the source. Consider whether a recent show is missing, incomplete, or subject to correction. Nexet specifically notes that missing recent data can affect its score.
  4. Read the tool’s definition of its output. Find out whether a percentage is a song’s frequency in prior shows, a ranking, or a score calculated after a concert. A score based on how many predicted songs were performed does not automatically mean that the service predicted the complete setlist, order, encore, or every song.
  5. Cross-check the reported performances. Setlist.fm’s guidelines favor sources such as complete concert recordings and official artist sources; credible concert reviews and photographs of paper setlists are also listed as acceptable evidence. A well-sourced record is a better basis for comparison than an unverified assumption.

For a specific upcoming show, the artist, tour, and date matter. Without them, there is no way to assess whether a particular forecast reflects the right run of performances or the latest available record.

Comparing two prediction tools fairly

Do not compare displayed percentages at face value unless the tools define and calculate them in comparable ways. A useful comparison focuses on the method rather than on which number looks higher.

What to compare What to look for Why it matters
Data coverage and freshness Which recent shows are included, and whether the latest performances are represented A forecast built on older or incomplete records may miss a newer pattern.
Weight given to recent shows Whether the service says newer performances count more heavily A recency-weighted method can respond differently to a recent change in the pattern than one that treats shows differently.
Meaning of the output Whether the figure is song frequency, a ranking, or a post-show accuracy score—and what the score counts Numbers with different definitions do not measure the same thing.
Evidence behind setlist entries Whether performances are recorded as actual shows and supported by credible sources Predictions and incomplete records should not be mistaken for confirmed performance data.

This comparison framework can help explain why forecasts differ. It does not establish that one service is more accurate, and the methods described here have not been independently benchmarked against a common sample.

What an accuracy score does not settle

A score needs a clear unit of evaluation. If a service counts how many predicted songs were performed, that says something about song inclusion. It does not, by itself, say whether the order was correct, whether every song in the actual setlist was predicted, or whether the forecast captured an encore. Those are different outcomes. A reader who cares about the likely songs may find an inclusion-oriented score useful; someone expecting a complete, ordered setlist needs evidence that the tool measures that fuller result.

Likewise, the frequency of a song in recent shows is descriptive: it tells you how often the song appeared in the setlists considered by that service. It should not be read as a promise about the next performance. ConcertPrep’s recency weighting and tour-selection cutoff describe its particular process, while Nexet describes a model-generated ranking and a score based on performed predicted songs. Neither description supplies a shared benchmark that would turn the two services’ outputs into directly comparable probabilities.

To establish an overall accuracy rate, a comparison would need, at minimum, a defined set of artists and concerts, a fixed point at which each forecast was recorded, a consistent definition of a correct prediction, and a way to handle missing or corrected setlist records. The sources discussed here do not provide such a benchmark. They also do not report a measured frequency at which setlists change. Treat any broad claim on those points cautiously unless it explains its sample and method.

Practical conclusion

Use a predicted setlist as a guide to likely songs, not as a promise of what the artist will play. Give more weight to recurring songs in several recent shows from the same tour, check whether the underlying records are current, and interpret each tool’s score according to its stated definition. A forecast may be informative even when the exact list remains uncertain; neither a high-looking percentage nor a familiar pattern establishes the next show’s setlist.
