First, test Google Maps on your phone while parked. If it also fails there, focus on Maps, location, GPS or internet access. If it works on the phone but not in the car, check the Android Auto connection and car display. The right fix depends on whether Maps will not open, your position is wrong or frozen, the screen is blank, or map details will not load.
Make changes and enter destinations only while parked. Google says you cannot type a destination on the car display until the vehicle is in Park; follow local driving laws and stay attentive to road conditions.
Start by identifying what is failing
While parked, open Google Maps on your phone and check whether it can show your location and load a map. Then connect to Android Auto and compare what happens on the car display. This is a practical way to narrow the problem to the phone app or location, the Android Auto connection, or network-dependent map information; it is not a diagnostic sequence prescribed by Google.
- Maps also fails on the phone: check location permissions, GPS reception and internet access according to the symptom.
- Maps works on the phone but Android Auto will not launch or connect: check compatibility and the wired or wireless setup.
- Maps opens but the position is wrong or frozen: check location access and GPS conditions.
- The map appears but traffic, search results or other details do not load: check internet access, or use a downloaded offline map for a covered driving route.
- Only the car display is blank or Maps crashes there: confirm Android Auto has launched and check the vehicle display guidance. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal fix for a Maps-only blank screen or crash.
If Android Auto will not connect or launch
Check that both your phone and vehicle support Android Auto, then follow Google’s setup instructions for your connection type. The available setup and prompts can vary by vehicle and phone.

Wired connection
- Connect the phone to the vehicle’s USB port.
- Follow the prompts on the phone and car display to complete setup.
- If it remains unreliable, check the vehicle’s Android Auto compatibility and connection guidance, and contact the vehicle manufacturer if needed.
A cable issue is one possible cause of a wired connection problem, but Google’s setup guidance does not say that replacing a cable will solve every failure. If you consider another cable, it needs to support data, and compatibility and port specifications vary by phone and vehicle. A cable will not resolve a GPS or Maps software problem.
Wireless connection
- Complete Bluetooth pairing between the phone and vehicle.
- Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services turned on during setup.
- If Android Auto still does not connect, check device and vehicle compatibility and follow the connection guidance for your vehicle.
See Google’s Android Auto setup instructions for the connection steps.

If your location is wrong or frozen
Check the phone’s location access before changing Android Auto settings. On the phone, make sure Location is on and Google Maps has permission to use it. On Android 12 and later, check whether Maps has precise-location access, if that option is available.
Precise-location permission and Android’s Location Accuracy setting are separate checks. Location Accuracy can use wireless signals, GPS and device sensors to improve location estimates. Find the setting and permission names in Google’s Location Accuracy guidance; exact menus can vary by Android version and device maker.

If Google Maps says “GPS Signal Lost”
GPS reception can be limited indoors or underground. Test the phone outside, under a clear sky, with the battery charged. Also check whether app permissions restrict location, battery saver is active, or metallic-base window film sits between the phone and the sky.
If the phone still cannot acquire GPS in those test conditions, Google Maps Help says it may need repair: “If your device cannot acquire a GPS signal when fully charged and outside with a clear sky, it may need to be repaired.” Follow the steps in Google’s GPS Signal Lost troubleshooting guide.

If routes or map details will not load
GPS positioning and internet-dependent features are different. A phone may know where it is while lacking the connection needed for online search or live traffic. If those map details are missing, check that the phone has internet access.
As a fallback, download the relevant map area while online and make sure the entire driving route falls within the downloaded area. Google Maps offline driving guidance does not include traffic information or alternate routes. Offline transit, cycling and walking directions are unavailable. See Google’s instructions to download map areas and navigate offline.
If only the car display is affected
Confirm Android Auto has launched, then open Maps from the Android Auto interface. If the phone’s Maps app works but the car display remains blank or Maps crashes there, consult the vehicle display or manufacturer guidance. The official support guidance cited in this article does not give a universal fix for this specific display symptom, so avoid assuming that clearing cache, reinstalling Maps or a particular update will resolve it.
For navigation controls and supported driving features, consult Google’s guides to turn-by-turn navigation in Android Auto and driving with Google Maps.
