You may be able to use Alipay or Weixin Pay at shops in mainland China and still be unable to use that wallet to buy items in a particular Chinese game. Everyday merchant payments and game top-ups are separate checkout systems. Whether a payment works depends on the game’s edition, publisher, account region, device platform or storefront, identity checks, and the methods shown at checkout.
Why a wallet that works in China may not work in a game
Visitor payment guidance covers purchases from participating merchants—often by scanning or presenting a QR code. An in-game purchase is processed through the game operator or a platform storefront, which may accept a different set of payment methods. A wallet’s general ability to make QR payments does not establish that a specific game accepts it.

The distinction matters especially when a game has separate mainland China and international editions. Similar names do not necessarily mean the editions share an account, server, currency, or billing system. A payment option available in one version may not appear in the other.

What international visitors can use for everyday payments
Visitor-facing options in mainland China include mobile wallets and QR payments, UnionPay services, cash, and—in pilot areas—e-CNY. A Tianhe District Government payment guide published March 30, 2026 says visitors can register Alipay or Weixin Pay with an international or local phone number or email, complete passport identity verification, link supported international cards, and pay by scanning or presenting a QR code. The guide also describes a UnionPay app route, Tour Card for everyday consumption, cash exchange and withdrawals, and e-CNY in pilot areas. These are visitor payment routes, not assurances about game checkout.

The State Council’s April 11, 2024 guide for overseas visitors says eligible users can link some international cards, including Visa and Mastercard, to Alipay and WeChat Pay. For overseas visitors using the mobile payment platforms described in that guide, it gives a $5,000 single-transaction cap and a $50,000 annual cumulative cap. Those figures should not be treated as universal limits for every card, wallet, transaction, or game purchase.
The State Council’s 2025 Guide to Working and Living in China notes that overseas bank cards require issuer verification and that card brands, limits, and fees vary by payment product. It also lists e-wallets from multiple markets for direct QR payments in China. Check the live prompts in the payment app and your card issuer’s terms rather than assuming every product has the same acceptance or fees.

How game checkout can differ by edition and platform
Game billing is title-specific. Identify the exact edition and server you use, then check where its purchases are processed: through the game itself, a mobile app store, a console or PC storefront, or another publisher-designated channel. The payment methods, currency, account-region rules, and refund route can differ across those paths.

A 2019 issuer filing described Alipay, WeChat Pay, and UnionPay among payment channels used in that company’s PRC game operations, and Apple’s App Store and Google Play among its overseas channels. This is one company’s historical disclosure, not a current map of all Chinese games. For a specific title, rely on its current official checkout instructions.

Identity checks and operator requirements
A Ministry of Culture notice issued December 1, 2016, and effective May 1, 2017, sets out requirements for online game operators. It says operators must require valid identity documents for real-name registration and may not provide in-game recharge or consumption to guest-mode users. It also directs operators to set single-recharge limits and show a confirmation identifying the amount and the virtual items or services being purchased. In specified circumstances, operators must prominently disclose virtual-item names, functions, prices, exchange ratios, and duration; for random draws, the notice requires disclosure of possible items and probabilities, as well as another way to obtain items or services with equivalent performance. These are the notice’s stated operator duties, not a guarantee that every game presents or implements them identically. Read the requirements in the government-hosted notice.
Check these details before topping up
- Confirm the edition and server. Check whether you are playing the mainland China or international version and which account and server are active.
- Identify the billing route. Note your device platform and the storefront or publisher checkout used for this purchase.
- Read the game’s own payment information. Check its official help page and checkout screen for accepted methods, currency, region restrictions, identity verification, top-up limits, and refund rules.
- Verify your wallet and card for that transaction. If using a visitor wallet, confirm that the card brand and issuer are supported, then check the displayed limit and fee. General QR acceptance at merchants does not prove acceptance by a game store.
- Keep the purchase record. Review the confirmation for the amount and the items or services being bought, and retain the receipt or transaction details in case you need support.
If a payment fails
Ask the game publisher or storefront support whether the problem is an account-region mismatch, an incomplete real-name check, a restriction on the payment product, or a decline from your card issuer. Check for a pending charge before trying again; repeated attempts can make it harder to distinguish a declined payment from one that is still processing.

Do not give passwords, one-time codes, or identity documents to an unofficial recharge seller. Without a named game and its official instructions, a third-party seller’s claim that it can top up the account cannot be verified.
