If Google Maps won’t share your location, first check the Google Account, phone, and internet connection being used to send it. If someone else can’t see you, confirm the share is still active and refresh their view. A share that stops after 24 hours, an account restriction, and “GPS Signal Lost” during navigation each need different checks.
This guide separates setup failures from stale recipient views and navigation-only GPS errors. Work through the section matching what you see instead of changing every setting at once. Location Sharing is tied to the account and device in use, so a correctly configured second phone does not automatically fix the phone that is sending the location.

Identify what is going wrong
“Google Maps location sharing not working” can describe several different problems. Start with the symptom rather than changing settings at random:
Recommended Free Tools
- You can’t start a share: check the signed-in account, device location, internet access, recipient details, and account eligibility.
- The other person can’t see you or sees an old location: check that you are online and the share is still active, then have the recipient refresh your profile.
- Sharing stops after a day: check the sharing method and duration. Link shares last up to 24 hours, and users under 18 may be unable to share for longer.
- Maps says “GPS Signal Lost” while navigating: investigate GPS reception and navigation permissions. This is a separate issue from whether Location Sharing is set up correctly.
- A notification never arrives: distinguish a notification problem from a location-viewing problem. Offline status, an old Maps version, age restrictions, or opening a link without signing in can affect notifications.
Location Sharing depends on both the Google Account and the device used to share. If you are signed in on more than one phone or tablet, troubleshoot the device that is actually sending your location. A recipient’s phone cannot correct a disabled location setting on the sender’s device, and a navigation GPS error does not prove that the sharing account is misconfigured.

Check the account, device, and connection first
On the phone or tablet you are sharing from, verify that the intended Google Account is signed in, device location is enabled, and the device has an active internet connection. Google’s Android Location Sharing guidance lists a Google Account, a mobile device, an internet connection, and the device’s “Use location” setting among the requirements.
- Open Google Maps and check the profile picture or initial to confirm which Google Account is active. If several accounts are available, do not assume Maps is using the one you intended.
- Make sure the device’s location setting is on. The system setting is separate from the Location Sharing screen in Maps; having a share listed in Maps does not override a device-wide location switch that is off.
- Check that the device can reach the internet. Location Sharing needs an active connection to send updates; a recipient may see an old location if the sharer is offline. A Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection that works for some apps can still be worth checking if Maps cannot update.
- If you use multiple devices, check the account and location setting on the device you are sharing from. A setting enabled on another device does not establish that the sharing device is ready.
- Return to Maps after correcting a prerequisite and look at Location sharing again. This confirms whether the account now permits a share before you troubleshoot the recipient’s phone.
If these basics are correct but you still cannot create a share, consider account restrictions before repeatedly toggling location settings. Google notes that availability can be affected by country or region, age restrictions, and restrictions on some Google Workspace accounts. A parent or guardian may manage a supervised account through Family Link. These limitations can block Location Sharing even when the phone’s location control is enabled.
Confirm the share and recipient in Google Maps
Open Google Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, then tap Location sharing. Check whether the intended person appears and whether sharing is still active. An expired share or one that has been stopped cannot provide a current location.
Check the recipient identity carefully. Selecting a similarly named contact, an outdated address, or the wrong phone entry can make the feature appear broken when the location was sent to somebody else. Contact access is optional for choosing people from your address book; allow it only if you want Maps to use those contacts.
Create a new direct share
- In Google Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, then Location sharing.
- Tap New share.
- Choose how long to share, then select the recipient and tap Share. Allow Maps to access your contacts if it asks and you want to select someone from them.
- After sending, remain in Location sharing long enough to confirm that the person is listed. If the person is absent, review the account and recipient details rather than expecting the old share to update itself.
Google’s instructions say direct sharing requires the recipient to have a Gmail account. If the person does not have a Google Account, a shareable link is an alternative; link sharing lasts up to 24 hours. Check the recipient’s address or contact details before sending, especially if several people have similar names.
| Sharing option | Recipient requirement | Duration detail |
|---|---|---|
| Direct share to a person | Recipient must have a Gmail account, according to Google Maps Help. | Choose a duration when creating the share. For a share that should continue, select “Until you turn this off” if that option is available. |
| Share by link | Useful for someone without a Google Account. | Up to 24 hours. |
A link is not equivalent to an indefinite direct share. If the recipient is relying on a link and access ends after a day, create a new share using the appropriate method rather than assuming the phone has lost GPS. Link viewing can also behave differently from a signed-in Maps recipient, particularly for notifications.

Fix sharing that stops or fails after 24 hours
For a problem lasting more than 24 hours, Google’s documented troubleshooting path begins with age verification. Google also says users under 18 may be unable to share for more than 24 hours, so a longer duration may not be available for every account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Verify your age if Google asks you to do so or if the share is limited to 24 hours. Complete the account prompt rather than repeatedly resending the same link.
- If verifying age does not resolve the problem, create a new share and choose Until you turn this off.
- In the recipient suggestions, swipe across and tap More. The person you need may not appear in the first suggested row.
- Search for the person by name, phone number, or email, then select that person and share.
- Ask the recipient to open the new share, not an older link that has already reached its limit.
This is a specific fix for a share-duration problem; it will not remove every eligibility restriction. If the option is unavailable or the account is managed, check the account’s age, supervision, Workspace restrictions, and regional availability. A supervised account may require a parent or guardian’s action through Family Link, and a Workspace administrator’s policy can limit availability.
Check Android location settings
On Android, confirm both the device-wide location control and Google Maps’ permission to use location. The exact Settings labels and paths vary by Android version and phone manufacturer, so look for the Location control in the device’s Settings and review Maps under app permissions rather than relying on one universal menu path.
- Device location: make sure it is on. Google’s requirements refer to the device’s “Use location” setting.
- Maps permission: check that Google Maps is allowed to access the device’s location. A denied permission can prevent a useful position even when the system Location switch is enabled.
- Location Accuracy: Android’s Location Accuracy setting can improve how the device determines its position. It may help with location precision, but it does not fix an incorrect account, expired share, missing internet connection, or recipient problem.
- Battery controls: if the issue is specifically navigation GPS loss, review whether battery saver is restricting location or device performance. Do not treat battery settings as a cure for an account or duration restriction.
Change one relevant setting at a time and then check the share again. If Maps is not permitted to use location, correcting that permission is more relevant than adjusting Location Accuracy. If the share itself is absent or expired, recreate it in Maps. Android menu wording can differ between manufacturers, so use the labels shown on the device rather than following a path intended for a different version.
Check location permission on iPhone or iPad
Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions cover the Maps sharing flow and eligibility, but the documented material here does not establish one current iOS Settings path for location permission or background app refresh. Menu wording can also change between iOS versions. Open the device’s Settings, find Google Maps in the app settings, and check that its location access is not denied; consult the current iOS controls on your device for the available permission choices.

If you are helping an iPhone user from an Android phone, troubleshoot the sender’s iPhone settings first. The recipient’s platform does not change the sender’s account eligibility, duration limit, or device location control. Conversely, an iPhone recipient should still refresh the shared profile in Maps after the Android sender confirms the share is active.
Refresh a recipient’s old or missing location
If the recipient sees a stale location, the sharer may be offline, the share may have expired or been stopped, or the recipient may need to refresh the person’s profile. Check the sender side first, then refresh on the recipient’s device:
- Ask the sharer to confirm their device is online and that the recipient is still listed under Google Maps Location sharing.
- On the recipient’s device, open the person’s profile in Maps.
- Tap More, then Refresh.
- Compare the displayed time or position after refreshing. If it remains old, return to the sender-side checks instead of refreshing repeatedly.
A refreshed screen cannot make an offline phone send a new location or revive a share that has ended. If the person is not listed or the duration has run out, the sharer needs to create a new share. If the sender has multiple devices, confirm that the device with the active internet connection is the one associated with the share.

Not receiving a notification is not the same as being unable to share a location. Google’s notification troubleshooting lists several possible causes: the sharer is offline, an app version is old, age restrictions apply, or someone is viewing a location-sharing link without signing in. Check those conditions separately from whether the recipient can open the shared location in Maps.
An old app version can therefore affect alerts even when the underlying share exists. A recipient who opens a link while signed out may also have a different experience from a person receiving a direct share in a Google Account. Resolve the specific notification condition rather than deleting a working share solely because an alert did not appear.
When “GPS Signal Lost” appears during navigation
A navigation error reading GPS Signal Lost points to a reception or device-location problem, not necessarily a Location Sharing problem. GPS may be unavailable indoors or underground. Google also identifies restricted location permissions, low battery or battery saver, and some metallic car-window films as possible causes.

- Move to a clear-sky outdoor location and check whether the phone can acquire GPS there. This test helps distinguish poor reception from an account or recipient issue.
- Review location permissions and turn off battery saver if it is limiting location access or device performance.
- If the error happens in a car, consider whether metallic-base glare-reducing window film could be obstructing GPS reception.
- Keep the phone charged while testing. If the phone still cannot acquire GPS while fully charged in a clear-sky outdoor setting, Google says it may need repair.
Treat possible repair as a conditional device diagnosis, not a conclusion about every Maps sharing failure. GPS reception affects how accurately a device can determine its position. Account eligibility, share duration, and recipient selection are separate checks; improving GPS reception will not correct those setup issues.
Choose the next check by symptom
| What you see | Check first | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Maps will not start a share | Signed-in account, device location, internet, recipient details, and account eligibility. | Use Profile picture or initial > Location sharing > New share; choose a duration and recipient. |
| Recipient sees an old location | Whether the sharer is online and whether sharing is still active. | Recipient opens the person’s profile and taps More > Refresh; recreate the share if it ended. |
| Share ends at 24 hours | Whether it was sent as a link and whether age restrictions apply. | Verify age; if needed, make a new direct share set to Until you turn this off and find the person through More. |
| Android location is unavailable or inaccurate | Device location control and Maps location permission. | Review Android Location Accuracy if precision remains an issue. |
| iPhone or iPad cannot provide location | Maps location permission in iOS Settings and the active Google Account. | Check the share in Maps; use the current iOS settings labels on the device. |
| Notification is missing | Sender’s connection, Maps version, age eligibility, and whether a link viewer is signed in. | Correct the relevant notification condition and test the existing share again. |
| “GPS Signal Lost” during navigation | Sky visibility, permissions, battery saver, and possible vehicle window-film obstruction. | Test GPS outdoors under a clear sky; consider repair only if acquisition still fails while fully charged. |
Common mistakes that make troubleshooting harder
- Checking the wrong device: a second phone signed into the same account may have different location and connectivity settings. Test the device actually sending the share.
- Confusing a link with direct sharing: a link is designed for someone without a Google Account and lasts up to 24 hours. It is not an “Until you turn this off” share.
- Refreshing before confirming the sender is online: recipient refresh cannot produce a new position from an offline device.
- Assuming Location Accuracy fixes everything: it can improve Android positioning, but cannot repair a missing permission, expired share, unsupported account, or wrong recipient.
- Treating navigation GPS loss as an account failure: indoor or underground reception, battery saver, permissions, or car-window film can affect navigation independently.
- Ignoring eligibility: age, supervision, Workspace policy, and regional availability may prevent sharing despite correct phone settings.
When to stop changing settings
Once the account, device location, internet connection, recipient, duration, and permissions have been checked, stop repeating the same toggles. If the problem is limited to a share lasting more than 24 hours, follow the age-verification and new-share procedure. If the problem is limited to navigation and GPS still cannot be acquired outdoors while the phone is fully charged, a device fault may need professional attention. Keeping these paths separate prevents a navigation repair from being treated as a solution for an account restriction, or an account change from being treated as a GPS-reception fix.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t Google Maps let me share my location?
Confirm the intended Google Account is signed in on the sending device, turn on the device’s location control, verify an active internet connection, and open Profile picture or initial > Location sharing > New share. If those checks pass, account age, supervision, Workspace restrictions, country or region availability, or an ineligible recipient may be blocking the share.
Why does Google Maps location sharing stop after 24 hours?
A link share lasts up to 24 hours, and users under 18 may not be able to share longer. Verify your age if prompted. If that does not help, create a new share set to Until you turn this off, tap More in the recipient suggestions, search by name, phone number, or email, and share again.
How do I make a stale Google Maps location update?
First have the sender confirm the phone is online and the share is still active. On the recipient’s device, open the person’s profile in Maps and tap More > Refresh. Refreshing cannot update an offline phone or restore an expired share.

Can I share with someone who does not have a Google Account?
Yes. Use a shareable link instead of direct sharing. Google says link sharing is an alternative for someone without a Google Account, but it lasts up to 24 hours.
Best Value
Does Android Location Accuracy fix location sharing?
Location Accuracy can improve how an Android phone determines its position. It does not fix a wrong account, disabled device location, denied Maps permission, missing internet connection, expired share, or account eligibility restriction.
What does “GPS Signal Lost” mean in Google Maps?
It is usually a navigation reception or device-location issue, separate from Location Sharing. GPS can be unavailable indoors or underground. Restricted permissions, low battery or battery saver, and metallic-base car-window film can also interfere. Test the phone outdoors under a clear sky.
Why am I not receiving a location-sharing notification?
Google lists an offline sharer, an old app version, age restrictions, and viewing a share link without signing in as possible causes. Check those conditions separately from whether the shared location can be opened in Maps.
What if Google Maps location sharing is unavailable on a supervised or work account?
A parent or guardian may manage a supervised account through Family Link, and some Google Workspace accounts have restrictions. Country or region availability and age rules can also apply. Correct phone settings alone may not remove those limits.
The Bottom Line
Start with the sending device: confirm the Google Account, “Use location,” internet connection, Maps permission, recipient, and share duration. Use age verification and a new “Until you turn this off” direct share for problems lasting more than 24 hours. For an old recipient view, confirm the sender is online and tap More > Refresh. Treat “GPS Signal Lost” during navigation as a separate reception or device issue, and test GPS outdoors before considering repair.
