How to Fix Google Home Devices Showing Stale Status in the App

A Google Home tile can show stale or offline status even when a device is online. Diagnose the tile, device, Wi-Fi, and service before considering a reset.

If a Google Home tile looks offline or shows an old state, first check whether the device itself still responds. If it does, the problem may be the app’s display; if it does not, check power, Wi-Fi and internet access. Work through the checks below before resetting anything.

First determine whether the device or its tile is the problem

Try the device directly—for example, use its physical control or test whether it responds to a command. Then check whether one device or several have stale status. A responsive device with a misleading tile points toward an app-display issue; an unresponsive device needs connection troubleshooting.

This distinction matters: Google’s 16 September 2026 Google Home release notes documented fixes for online sensors, cameras, and smoke and carbon monoxide detector tiles that could appear greyed out after leaving their controllers, as well as smart door locks incorrectly shown with offline icons. A stale tile does not, by itself, prove that the device has lost power or Wi-Fi.

Check what is affected

What you see Where to start
One device has stale status Check that device’s power and connection, then follow its model-specific support steps.
Several devices show offline Check shared causes such as home power, the router, internet service, and Google/Nest service status. Google recommends restarting the router when more than one Nest product is offline.

Google’s guidance for an extended offline state says a Nest product cannot reconnect to home Wi-Fi. Its separate device-unavailable guidance also identifies a phone connected to a different Wi-Fi network or a device that has lost power as possible causes.

Work through the checks in order

  1. Check power. Confirm the affected device is plugged in or otherwise powered. If it is safe and practical for that model, disconnect its power, reconnect it, and allow it time to start.
  2. Compare Wi-Fi networks. For a device-unavailable message, check the Wi-Fi network on the phone or tablet and the network used by the device. Google says they must match. Make sure the phone is using home Wi-Fi, not cellular data or a different network.
  3. Refresh the app. Close and reopen Google Home, then check the tile again. Make sure the app is up to date. Google’s troubleshooting guidance also includes restarting the app and phone when resolving setup or connection problems. Google does not specify a universal “refresh status” button.
  4. Test the home internet. Use another device connected to home Wi-Fi to open a website or service. If it cannot get online, investigate the router or internet provider. If internet access works but Nest products remain offline, check Google’s Nest service status and the support instructions for the affected product.
  5. Consider recent network changes. If the Wi-Fi name, password, or provider changed, the device may need to be connected to the new network in Google Home. For speakers and displays, follow Google’s instructions to forget the current Wi-Fi network and set it up again.
  6. Use the right product instructions. Cameras, thermostats, locks, speakers and displays, and third-party devices can have different recovery steps. Use the official steps for the exact model rather than applying a reset sequence intended for another product.

When to restart or reset

Restarting a device by disconnecting and reconnecting its power is a reasonable early step after checking power and Wi-Fi. A factory reset is different: it can remove device settings and require setup again. For speakers and displays, Google lists a factory reset as a fallback if reconnecting to Wi-Fi does not work. Follow the reset instructions for the exact model, and do not start with a factory reset when the device responds but only its tile looks wrong.

What an offline message means

Nest products periodically try to reconnect to the network, according to Google’s Wi-Fi and connection troubleshooting guide. An offline label therefore does not identify the cause on its own. Use the device’s response, how many products are affected, and whether the network recently changed to choose the next check.
