If Gboard is floating in the middle of your screen, squeezed to one side, or showing an unfamiliar letter arrangement, first check its mode and active layout. On Android, turn off Floating to dock the keyboard, check One-handed mode and Resize if it is too narrow, and verify the selected language if the letters have changed. On iPhone and iPad, manage layouts in Settings. Try these targeted fixes before resetting or reinstalling the app.
Start by matching the symptom to its likely cause

Fix a floating or detached keyboard on Android
Open an app’s text field so Gboard appears, then open its feature menu and switch off Floating. Gboard should return to its usual docked position. The menu control may look like a four-square or menu icon, and its location can vary across devices and releases. The toggle is described in a Google Gboard Community Manager’s guidance, rather than a universal device-specific official procedure.

If the keyboard still looks displaced
Open the feature menu and look for Resize. Some versions expose a reset control in that view; a Google Pixel Community Product Expert describes resetting the size and tapping Done. Treat this as a version-dependent community workaround: the control and exact sequence may not appear on every device.
Fix a keyboard that is too small or pushed to one side
Check One-handed mode
If the keyboard is narrow and aligned to one side, open Gboard’s feature menu and check whether One-handed mode is active. Turn it off if you want the full-width keyboard. Menu labels and placement can vary by Gboard version and device. A Google Community Product Expert recommends this check for an abnormally small keyboard and also points to Resize.

Adjust size only if the controls are available
Look for Resize in the feature menu if the keyboard became small or shifted after a size change. Depending on the release, you may be able to restore its default size or adjust the keyboard’s bounds. A Google community guide also describes changing Keyboard height in Gboard Preferences; that setting and its path are version-dependent, so use it only if it appears in your app.
Correct the letters or layout
If the key arrangement differs across apps, check which language or layout is active. In Gboard, tap the Globe key to switch languages, or touch and hold it to choose the language you want. Google’s Android troubleshooting steps describe this language-switching method.

When only one app or field looks different
Try typing in a standard text field in another app. Registration, phone-number, or other specialized fields can request numeric input, which may hide letters or symbols by design. If a symbol is unavailable only in that field, the Google community guidance suggests entering it elsewhere and pasting it, if the app allows pasting.
Manage Gboard layouts on iPhone and iPad
To add or enable a keyboard layout, open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and select the layout you need. To switch among enabled languages while typing, use the Globe key. Google notes that changing Gboard’s language does not change the device’s language; see its iPhone and iPad Gboard guidance.

Use app recovery steps only if the problem persists
If the layout controls do not help and Gboard is also freezing, crashing, or failing to respond, follow Google’s staged Android troubleshooting rather than starting with a data reset. The listed steps are general app recovery actions; use the device’s own app settings where menu names differ.

- Restart the device and update Gboard. Google recommends these first. See Gboard troubleshooting.
- Force stop Gboard and clear its cache if it remains unresponsive. On Android, app-management labels and paths can differ by manufacturer.
- Clear Gboard storage/data only if needed. This resets Gboard to its default state, so expect to lose app settings and customizations.
- Consider uninstalling updates if the issue began just after an update, or reinstall Gboard if trouble continues.
- Before uninstalling, install another keyboard if Gboard is your only one. That gives you another way to enter text while Gboard is unavailable.
