If you can still access the email address on your PlayStation account, use Account Management’s Trouble Signing In? > Recover Your Account flow and follow the secure link sent to that email. If someone changed your sign-in email or you have lost access to the email, passkey, phone, or verification method, contact PlayStation Support through its Online Assistant. If your email account may also be compromised, secure it first.

Recover the account if you can access its email
- Open PlayStation Account Management and select Trouble Signing In? > Recover Your Account.
- Enter the sign-in ID—the email address used for the account—and submit the request.
- Open the secure recovery link PlayStation sends, complete the requested information, and choose a new password.
The message can take a few minutes to arrive. Check your spam or junk folder if it does not appear. Use the link in PlayStation’s recovery guide if the page labels or flow differ from these directions.

PlayStation says a message about a change that was not initiated by PlayStation may mean someone else is trying to access your account. Change the password for the email account linked to PlayStation before changing the PlayStation sign-in method. If you cannot change the email password, contact that email provider. If you cannot change the PlayStation sign-in method, contact PlayStation Support.

Follow PlayStation’s guidance for phished accounts and unauthorized charges, then use its account recovery guide. If the email account itself is inaccessible, PlayStation Support is the appropriate escalation path.
When you cannot use your email, passkey, or verification method
Lost phone, but a passkey is registered elsewhere
Try signing in on another device where the same passkey is registered. If successful, register a replacement passkey there. If no registered device is available, contact the Online Assistant.

2-step verification still works with a backup code
PlayStation provides 10 backup codes, each usable once. At the verification prompt, select Trouble Receiving Code? > Sign In Using a Backup Code and enter an unused code. PlayStation says a sign-in verification code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt.

Contact PlayStation Support through its Online Assistant if you cannot access or remember the linked email, have no device for passkey sign-in, cannot use 2-step verification, or see unexpected verification prompts and cannot change the sign-in method. PlayStation’s instructions do not establish a universal response time or a single proof-of-ownership checklist, so follow the steps Support gives for your account.

After recovery, review devices, settings, and payment exposure
Once you can sign in, assess which access and payment protections need attention. PlayStation’s instructions to sign out of all devices, deactivate consoles, and consider removing payment methods are given in its stolen-console guidance; after a suspected takeover, they are prudent options to review rather than a mandatory sequence for every account.

- Review account details and sign-in methods. Check registered passkeys and 2-step verification, and confirm the account details are yours. Changing the sign-in ID signs the account out of all devices, according to PlayStation; do not change it until you have verified that you can access the destination email.
- Review device access. Sign out of all devices and deactivate consoles if the access list or your circumstances warrant it. Use PlayStation’s Account & Security pages for the current settings.
- Review payment methods and purchases. Consider removing stored payment methods if you are concerned about unwanted purchases, and report unauthorized charges through PlayStation’s compromised-account guidance.
- Consider checkout protection. PlayStation offers Require Password at Checkout for Store purchases, but says this setting is not compatible with passkeys. Choose the setup that fits the sign-in method you prefer.
Choose passkeys or 2-step verification for future sign-ins

These are PlayStation’s stated compatibility and setup details, not independent device tests. Its passkey troubleshooting guidance says to select Can’t Sign In with Passkey and sign in through email or QR code; it also calls out possible problems with Remote Play on Mac, outdated browsers, and some Android/Windows combinations. Consult the current passkey instructions and Account & Security pages before changing your setup.
Reduce the chance of another account takeover
- Use a strong, unique password for your email account and PlayStation sign-in. A password manager or passkey can help with unique credentials; neither replaces PlayStation’s recovery process.
- Do not share account details or enter them on sites promising free virtual currency. PlayStation warns that direct messages about account reports or beta access can be used to solicit credentials or direct people to malicious sign-in pages.
- Do not scan QR codes sent by someone claiming they will restore your access. Navigate to PlayStation’s official support pages yourself.
- Avoid signing in on shared devices when possible, and sign out if you do.
PlayStation’s security guidance puts it plainly: “Sharing your account details compromises the security of your account.” Read its security best practices and passkey setup instructions for current settings and cautions.
