How to Fix Games That Don’t Support Ultrawide Resolutions

Start with native display settings, then check current, game-specific ultrawide guidance before editing files or applying a community fix.

If a PC game shows black bars or won’t offer your ultrawide monitor’s resolution, first check the game’s own display settings and current support notes. If those don’t help, look for a fix made for that exact game and version. There is no universal Windows tool that safely makes every title render correctly at ultrawide aspect ratios.

Identify what is not fitting the screen

Before changing settings or files, note the game’s exact title and version, where you bought it, your monitor’s native resolution and aspect ratio, and where the problem appears. Gameplay, menus, and pre-rendered cutscenes can behave differently in the same game.

  • Black bars at the sides: The game may be pillarboxing—preserving a narrower frame rather than filling the wider display.
  • The game fills the screen but looks cropped: It may be using a fixed field of view or another aspect-ratio behavior rather than expanding the horizontal view.
  • Only menus or videos have bars: The limitation may apply to those elements, not gameplay.
  • The ultrawide resolution is missing: Check whether Windows detects the monitor at its native resolution and whether the game offers that resolution in its display settings.

Some games use Hor+ rendering: as the screen gets wider, the game shows more of the scene horizontally. Others preserve a fixed aspect ratio and leave bars instead. Simply stretching a narrower image to fill the monitor is not the same as proper ultrawide support; it can distort the image, while removing bars through a crop or FOV change can alter framing.

Try the game’s built-in display options

  1. In Windows display settings, confirm that the ultrawide monitor is detected and set to its native resolution.
  2. Open the game’s display or graphics settings. Choose the monitor’s native resolution and an ultrawide aspect ratio if those options are available.
  3. Try the game’s fullscreen and borderless display modes. Their behavior varies by title, so check whether either changes the resolution or bars.
  4. Apply the change and restart the game if needed. Check gameplay, menus, and cutscenes separately.

These are general checks, not a guaranteed sequence: games handle display modes differently. If the correct resolution is unavailable or the bars remain, consult the game’s current support information before editing files.

Check the exact game’s current ultrawide support

Search for the game on PCGamingWiki and read its widescreen or ultrawide notes. Check when the entry was updated, which release or storefront it covers, and whether the reported limitation affects gameplay, menus, or video. Instructions for one version or storefront may not apply to another.

Prefer a built-in option or an official update when one is available. For example, PCGamingWiki reports that Control gained an ultrawide option in update 1.30 in March 2025; the same entry describes a community patcher for versions before that update. Check your installed build and the current entry before following older guidance.

Use a game-specific community fix only when it matches your build

When native settings and official support do not resolve the problem, look for a configuration edit or community fix documented for your exact game and release. These approaches are title-specific, not interchangeable general-purpose fixes.

  • The Outer Worlds has documented ultrawide and superwide tools and configuration approaches; the available details differ by version and storefront. See the current PCGamingWiki entry.
  • The Evil Within has documented widescreen community tools and configuration guidance. The existence of those methods is not a reason to install an unrelated or unverified executable; consult the current game entry and match its instructions to your release.
  • The Medium has a community fix listing compatibility for specified Microsoft Store/Game Pass, Steam, and GOG versions, and potentially other versions. The listing describes aspect-ratio and FOV changes, so check its current compatibility details and expected visual result before using it: The Medium ultrawide fix.

Before applying a community patch or configuration edit, confirm that its instructions match your game version and storefront. Back up any file you plan to change, and use the file locations and steps provided by the fix’s current documentation. A fix may change framing or field of view, and the cited methods do not establish a universal safety guarantee.

When keeping the black bars is the better choice

If no compatible game-specific fix is documented, the game may be technically limited or intentionally designed around a narrower aspect ratio. Keeping the bars preserves the image’s proportions. Stretching can make objects look wider, while cropping or changing FOV can remove or reveal parts of the scene in ways the game was not designed to show. If a compromise is acceptable, choose it knowingly rather than treating every method of filling the screen as equivalent ultrawide rendering.
