Start by identifying what is actually failing: the game may be losing FPS, Streamlabs Desktop may be crashing, the stream may be dropping frames because of encoding or network trouble, or the game may simply not be appearing in the capture source. Disable third-party overlays first, then test game frame limits and graphics settings before moving on to the matching troubleshooting branch below. These reversible checks are more useful than assuming a hardware upgrade is needed.
Identify the symptom before changing settings
“Dropped frames” can describe different problems. Check whether the game itself slows down, Streamlabs Desktop closes, the stream stutters while the game remains smooth, or the game image is black or missing in Streamlabs. Each points to a different part of the setup.

| What you see | Likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| The game runs at a lower or unstable frame rate while Streamlabs is open | Game workload, GPU headroom, or overlay conflicts |
| The broadcast stutters, but the game remains smooth | Encoding performance or network stability; distinguish skipped frames from network-related dropped frames in Streamlabs |
| Streamlabs Desktop closes or reports a crash | Application, driver, Windows update, or diagnostic information |
| The game is running but its capture is black or absent | Game Capture source configuration or game compatibility |
Streamlabs’ performance guide separates lagged frames, skipped frames, and network-related dropped frames. Treat the label shown in the app as a clue, not proof that the game’s GPU is at fault. See Streamlabs’ guide to dropped frames and CPU/GPU issues.

Overlays from GeForce Experience, Discord, Steam, Ubisoft Connect, and Origin can contribute to FPS drops or instability, particularly when several run together. Turn off one overlay at a time where practical, then reproduce the problem in the same game and scene. Changing a single setting per test makes it easier to identify a culprit and reverse the change if it has no effect.

- Close or disable one third-party overlay, such as the Steam or Discord overlay.
- Restart the game and Streamlabs Desktop if the overlay change requires it.
- Test the same gameplay situation and note whether FPS or stability changes.
- Repeat with other overlays only if the problem remains.
Streamlabs’ troubleshooting article also discusses Windows 10 Game DVR and Game Bar. Its interface guidance is explicitly for Windows 10; do not assume those exact steps or labels apply to other Windows versions. Consult Streamlabs’ game-crash and FPS-drop guidance for its current platform-specific notes.
Reduce the game’s GPU workload
If the game loses FPS only while streaming, test whether it is consuming the headroom Streamlabs needs to compose and render the broadcast. These adjustments reduce or limit the game’s workload; they are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed fixes.
- Set an in-game frame-rate cap, or enable V-Sync, G-Sync, or FreeSync where supported by the game and display.
- Lower demanding in-game graphics settings and test again.
- Change one setting at a time and compare performance in the same scene.
Streamlabs recommends limiting frame output or reducing game quality when investigating lagged frames, so the system has room to compose frames. If reducing the game load improves the issue, that points toward available GPU headroom rather than proving a particular component is defective. The performance and stream-quality guide explains the distinction between lagged, skipped, and network-dropped frames.

If the stream stutters while the game stays smooth
Skipped frames: check CPU and encoding load
Skipped frames can indicate that the system cannot keep up with encoding. Check CPU usage while streaming. If you use x264 software encoding, try a faster preset to reduce CPU work. If your system and Streamlabs configuration support hardware encoding, testing it may also reduce CPU load. Change one encoder setting at a time and watch whether the skipped-frame symptom changes.
Network-related dropped frames or disconnections
If Streamlabs reports network-related dropped frames or the broadcast disconnects while local gameplay remains smooth, investigate the network path rather than treating the GPU as the default cause. Streamlabs categorizes network-related dropped frames separately from rendering lag and encoder skips. The cited guidance does not establish a universal network setting or single fix for every connection, so use the app’s specific status and connection symptoms to narrow the cause.
If Streamlabs Desktop itself crashes
Use the crash-reporting and software-maintenance steps from Streamlabs’ crash guide. That guide was last updated April 25, 2025; interface labels may change, so verify them in your installed version.

If Game Capture is black or missing
A black or absent capture is not the same as a game crash or low in-game FPS. Some games may not support Game Capture, and the source can fail even while the game runs normally. Try these source-specific checks:
- Delete the affected Game Capture source and create it again.
- Launch Streamlabs Desktop as administrator.
- In the source settings, try Capture Specific Window or foreground-window capture.
- Toggle the anti-cheat hook setting and retest.
- Disable external overlays and update graphics drivers.
- Try borderless fullscreen, or use window capture if Game Capture remains unavailable.
Use Streamlabs’ Black Screen Game Capture Problems guide for source troubleshooting. If you use a capture card and that card’s source is stuttering or unavailable, treat it as a separate device issue: check whether another application is using the device and review the source settings for that card. The capture-card troubleshooting guide applies to that setup, not to ordinary game crashes or FPS loss.

A practical retest sequence
- Record the symptom: game FPS loss, app crash, skipped frames, network drops, or missing capture.
- Disable third-party overlays one at a time and test again.
- If game FPS is the issue, cap the game’s frames or lower its graphics settings.
- If the game stays smooth but the stream does not, distinguish CPU/encoder skips from network drops and follow that branch.
- If Streamlabs closes, enable crash reporting and work through its software and driver checks.
- If only the captured image fails, rebuild and adjust the capture source rather than changing game-performance settings.
A hardware purchase is not a general first-line fix in the available Streamlabs guidance. Consider hardware only after the symptom and a specific bottleneck have been established.
