Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFree streaming channels that buffer or fail to load are not automatically a sign of poor Wi-Fi—or a problem with the streaming service. First check whether the fault affects one title, one app, or several apps. Then test the connection at the TV or streaming player and work through simple network and app fixes before buying an extender or other hardware.
First, find out what is failing
Try these checks in order. The pattern helps narrow down the cause; it does not prove it on its own.

- Try another title in the same app. If only one movie or show fails while others play, the issue may be with that title or the service. If it continues, check the service’s official help or outage information and report the affected title.
- Try a different streaming app. If other apps play normally, focus on the first app or its service. If several apps fail, investigate the TV or streaming player’s connection and software.
- Check another device on the same Wi-Fi. Try opening a website or streaming app on a phone or computer. If that device also cannot connect, restart the modem/router; if the problem remains, contact your internet provider. TCL recommends this check before treating the TV as the cause.
Roku Support says, “An unstable internet connection can cause issues with loading videos and apps on your Roku device.” That is one possible cause, not a diagnosis for every buffering problem.

On a Roku device
Open Settings > Network > Check connection. Roku’s tool checks whether the device can see the network and reach the internet. Roku describes a “Fair” signal as weak and associates it with pauses or reduced quality; “Poor” makes frequent buffering or disconnections more likely.

Roku’s typical download-speed guidance is 3 Mbps for SD, 5 Mbps for HD, and 25 Mbps or more for 4K. These are Roku’s figures, not guarantees for every app or network. A service may need more bandwidth, other devices may be using it, and a speed reading alone does not reveal every wireless problem.
On another TV or streaming player
Use the device’s network or connection test if one is available, and follow its on-screen directions. Menu names and restart procedures vary by model. If you can, compare the TV’s connection with a phone or computer on the same network.

Try network fixes before buying anything
Restart the player and router
Restart the TV or streaming player and the router. Roku’s playback guidance says to unplug the router for 10 seconds; its connection guidance describes unplugging both the Roku and router for 30 seconds when addressing internet access. Since procedures differ, follow the instructions for your model rather than mixing steps. Allow the router to reconnect before testing playback again.
Improve Wi-Fi at the TV
- Move the router or player closer together where practical, and raise equipment rather than leaving it on the floor.
- Reduce obstructions such as walls and enclosed cabinets. A TV can block the signal to a streaming stick plugged in behind it.
- Keep the router away from possible sources of interference, including microwaves and cordless phones.
- Pause large downloads and other streams while testing.
- If both the router and player support it, try the other Wi-Fi band. Some Roku models cannot use certain 5 GHz DFS channels; do not change router channels unless you can follow the documentation for both devices.
Test Ethernet if your device supports it
If the TV or player has an Ethernet port—or supports a compatible Ethernet adapter—connect it to the router and test the same app. Roku describes Ethernet as more stable than Wi-Fi. TCL notes that if Ethernet works while Wi-Fi does not, signal strength, router settings, or wireless interference may be involved. A cable is only an option for a device with compatible wired-network support.

Fix a problem isolated to one app or title
If other apps work but one app does not, check that service’s official support or outage information. Then update the app and the TV or streaming device’s system software. Menu paths depend on the platform, so use the device’s current instructions.
On Roku, if the app still fails, remove and reinstall it. Reinstalling may require you to sign in again; TCL notes this for TCL Roku TVs. If only one title fails, try another title and contact the streaming provider about the one that will not play. For a specific service, use its current local help instructions rather than assuming that troubleshooting steps are identical across services and regions.

Should you buy a Wi-Fi extender?
Not as the first step. An extender is most relevant when testing points to persistently weak Wi-Fi coverage where the TV is located—not when only one title or app fails. Before spending money, try repositioning the router or player, reducing interference and competing traffic, and checking whether a wired connection works.

If multiple rooms have weak coverage or the connection remains poor after those checks, a dual-band or mesh router may be worth considering. Roku says newer dual-band or mesh systems often fix persistent Wi-Fi problems, but that is not a reason to replace a working router for an issue isolated to one service or title.
Best Value
- Streaming made easy: Roku Express lets you stream free, live and premium TV over the Internet—right to your TV. It’s perfect for new users, secondary TVs and easy gifting—but powerful enough for seasoned pros
- Quick and easy setup: Just plug it into your TV with the included High Speed HDMI Cable and connect to the internet to get started
- Tons of power, tons of fun: Compact and power-packed, you’ll stream your favorites with ease; from movies and series on Apple TV, Prime Video, Netflix, The Roku Channel, HBO, Showtime and Google Play to cable alternatives like Hulu with Live TV and PlayStation Vue, enjoy the most talked about TV across free and paid channels
- Low cost, no extra fees: For under $30, Roku Express streaming device includes a High Speed HDMI Cable—and there’s no monthly equipment fee; with access to free TV on hundreds of channels, there’s plenty to stream without spending extra
- Simple remote: Incredibly easy to use, this remote features shortcut buttons to popular streaming channels
If a Roku stick’s position behind the TV appears to obstruct its signal, Roku links a free HDMI extender as a way to move the stick. That may address placement; it is not a general fix for app outages, slow internet service, or every buffering problem.
Leave factory reset until last
Roku and TCL position a factory reset as a late troubleshooting step, not the starting point. A reset erases apps, sign-ins, settings, and preferences or requires you to set the device up again. Consider it only after the connection and app-specific checks have failed, and make sure you can sign in again before proceeding.
