A good fit leaves room for your longest toe, holds your heel and midfoot securely, and does not squeeze or let your forefoot slide. There is no single size-up rule that works for every runner or shoe.
Start with both feet and the brand’s size chart
Measure the length and width of both feet, then use the chart for the brand and regional sizing system of the shoe you want. If one foot is longer, use that measurement as your starting point and check that the shoe fits that foot comfortably. Size conversions and measurement methods differ, so a chart is a guide to which size to try—not proof that a particular model will fit.

ASICS Singapore illustrates a method that adds 1.5 cm to a foot measurement. That is guidance for its illustrated method and region, not a universal instruction to add 1.5 cm when choosing any running shoe. Check the applicable chart and fitting advice for the brand and country you are shopping in.
Check the fit on your foot
Try the shoe with the socks you normally run in. Brooks recommends trying shoes later in the day, when feet may be larger than earlier in the day. Stand in the shoes and assess the fit rather than relying on the size printed on the box.

Toe room
Check the space between your longest toe and the front of the shoe. Brooks recommends approximately 1/2 to 1 inch, or about a thumbnail’s width; Nike Canada describes roughly a thumb’s width. These are brand recommendations, not a standardized measurement or a guarantee of fit. Your toes should have room without the shoe feeling excessively long.
Heel and midfoot
The heel and midfoot should feel held in place without painful pressure. ASICS describes a snugger heel with a roomier forefoot. A shoe that slips at the heel or lets the foot move excessively through the middle may not be the right fit, even if there is enough room at the toes.

Forefoot width
The front of the shoe should not bind or squeeze your foot. Width is a separate fit choice from length: if the forefoot feels tight, try another width or a different shoe shape before simply adding length. A longer shoe may create unwanted movement elsewhere without fixing the width problem.
Width labels and options vary by brand and model. Brooks describes narrow, medium, wide and extra-wide options in its range, but those labels are not available or identical across all brands.

Compare candidate shoes consistently
When choosing between two models, check each one against the same points while wearing your usual running socks:
- Room in front of the longest toe
- Secure heel hold
- Comfortable midfoot hold
- Forefoot width without pinching or excessive movement
- Comfort while standing and moving in the shoe
- The brand’s size-chart guidance for that model and country
If a model feels narrow across the forefoot and the brand offers width options, compare the suitable width rather than using extra length to compensate. Brand-authored fit advice can help you assess the shoe, but it does not establish that any one brand or model is best for every foot.
Rank #4
- Lightweight mesh upper with 3-color digital print delivers complete breathability
- Durable leather overlays for stability & that locks in your midfoot
- EVA sockliner provides soft, step-in comfort
- Charged Cushioning midsole uses compression molded foam for ultimate responsiveness & durability
- Solid rubber outsole covers high impact zones for greater durability with less weight
Why a half-size increase is not a universal fix
Some runners may need a different size from their usual casual shoes, but the cited guidance does not establish that every runner should go up a half size. Brands and models differ in shape and sizing. Use the chart to choose a starting size, then let toe room, heel security, midfoot hold and forefoot comfort determine whether that specific shoe fits.
