How to Fix Fortnite Creative Maps That Won’t Load or Let You Join

Troubleshoot Fortnite Creative launch errors, matchmaking codes, connection problems, and islands that load without visible players.

If a Fortnite Creative map will not load or matchmaking will not let you join, check Epic Games Status first. A matchmaking outage or maintenance can cause the launch error “We were unable to begin the match due to an error,” and changing your device or network settings will not fix an active service problem. If services are available, use the error message to choose the next step: try another matchmaking region for a Creative launch failure, then work through the connection checks that apply to your platform. If the island loads but looks empty, troubleshoot the instance and player population rather than treating it as a failed load.

1. Check whether Fortnite matchmaking is available

Open Epic Games Status and look for a matchmaking incident or maintenance notice. Epic says the Creative message “We were unable to begin the match due to an error” can appear when matchmaking is under maintenance or communication with Epic’s servers fails. Its guidance for matchmaking errors #1–#3 also advises checking service status and waiting when a relevant system is down.

If matchmaking is reporting an outage, wait for service to recover before changing DNS, router, or device settings. Those local changes cannot resolve a problem on Epic’s side.

2. Use the exact error to narrow down the cause

Fortnite matchmaking errors do not all mean the island itself is broken. Read the complete message or code before trying a fix:

  • Error #1: can indicate that Fortnite could not connect you to a match.
  • Error #2: can refer to the content beacon service; in a tournament context, it may instead relate to eligibility.
  • Error #3: can indicate that a queue is full. Check service status and retry after the queue or service condition changes.
  • Error #5: means Fortnite could not connect you to a match and is usually associated with a server or network issue. Restart Fortnite after checking service status, then use the connection checks below.

These codes point to possible fault areas; they do not establish that a particular Creative island is damaged.

3. Fix the Creative launch error

For the specific message “We were unable to begin the match due to an error,” Epic’s Creative troubleshooting guidance recommends trying another matchmaking region and then changing DNS settings if matchmaking is available.

  1. Change matchmaking region: In Fortnite, open the game settings and find the matchmaking region option. Select another available region, apply the change, and try the island again. Region labels and menu layout may vary by game version.
  2. Try Epic’s DNS guidance: If changing region does not help, follow Epic’s DNS instructions for your device and platform. DNS settings differ across Windows, consoles, and routers; do not apply Windows-only instructions to a console.

If neither step resolves the Creative launch error, Epic directs players to submit an in-game bug report.

4. Work through connection checks that fit your device

When matchmaking is operating and the problem persists, Epic’s general connection guidance includes the following checks. Use only the steps that match your platform and setup; some are specific to Windows or a managed network.

  • Restart the modem or router: Power-cycle your network equipment, allow it to reconnect, then reopen Fortnite and try joining again.
  • Check DNS and clear DNS data: Epic includes public DNS and flushing DNS among its connection troubleshooting options. Follow the instructions for your operating system rather than guessing at addresses or applying PC commands to a console.
  • Sync the device clock: Make sure your computer or console is set to the correct date, time, and time zone, preferably through automatic time synchronization.
  • Check network whitelisting and proxy settings: If you use a school, workplace, family-managed, or otherwise restricted network, a firewall, allowlist, or proxy may prevent Fortnite from connecting. Ask the network administrator to check the relevant settings.
  • Clear the device cache: Use the cache-clearing method supported by your device. The procedure is platform-specific.
  • On Windows, check for updates and reset network configuration only as directed: Epic’s list includes updating Windows and resetting the Windows Hosts file. Follow its Windows-specific instructions; do not edit the Hosts file without understanding the procedure.
  • On Windows, close background applications: Temporarily close apps that may interfere with the connection, then test Fortnite again.

Make one change at a time and retry the same island after each one. This helps identify which change, if any, affects the problem.

5. If the island loads but nobody is visible

An island that appears empty may have loaded successfully. Epic identifies island player capacity, low population at the time, and matchmaking region as reasons you might be alone or placed in a separate instance.

6. Report a Creative launch problem that remains

If matchmaking is available and Epic’s Creative-specific steps do not resolve the launch error, submit an in-game bug report. Include the island or code you were trying to enter, the exact error text or number, your platform, and the troubleshooting steps already attempted. These details help distinguish a matchmaking problem from an issue limited to one island or device.
