Short answer: Apple Watch blood oxygen readings are an occasional wellness estimate, not a substitute for a medical-purpose pulse oximeter or professional advice. A fingertip pulse oximeter typically gives a spot estimate of oxygen saturation (SpO₂) and pulse rate, but its intended use depends on the specific model. Neither device can diagnose a condition, and a number should be considered alongside how you feel.
What each device measures—and what it is for
Both devices estimate blood oxygen saturation, usually shown as SpO₂. A pulse oximeter also typically displays pulse rate. Neither takes a blood sample; the fingertip device clips onto a finger, while Apple Watch uses its sensors to estimate blood oxygen.

The key distinction is intended use. Apple says Blood Oxygen is designed for general fitness and wellness, not medical use, self-diagnosis, or consultation with a doctor. A standalone fingertip oximeter’s purpose varies by model: some over-the-counter devices intended for medical purposes have FDA clearance, while general-wellness devices are not evaluated for clinical decision-making. Check the specific device’s labeling rather than assuming that every fingertip oximeter is medically suitable.

How the readings are collected
Apple Watch
Blood Oxygen is available on Apple Watch Series 6 or later and all Apple Watch Ultra models, subject to country and region availability; Apple Watch SE is not supported. For an on-demand measurement, Apple instructs you to wear the watch snugly, keep your wrist flat, and hold your arm steady. The measurement takes 15 seconds. The watch may also take occasional background readings when you are not moving, but their frequency varies with activity. Saved results can be reviewed in the iPhone Health app.

Availability in the United States has an additional model and software qualification. Apple’s current support page says watches purchased on or after January 18, 2024, with part numbers ending LW/A or LS/A analyze readings on the paired iPhone, where results appear in Health. Apple’s August 14, 2025 announcement describes the redesigned feature for some U.S. Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 users after updating to iOS 18.6.1 and watchOS 11.6.1. Apple said this change did not affect previously purchased units with the original feature or units purchased outside the U.S. These descriptions do not establish eligibility for every watch in a named series: check the current Apple support page and the model or part number for your device.
Fingertip pulse oximeter
A fingertip unit is generally used for a spot check. Follow its instructions, keep your hand warm and relaxed, and stay still while it takes a reading. Wait for the displayed value to stabilize rather than treating the first number as definitive. FDA also advises removing nail polish from the measurement finger and recording the value and time if you are tracking changes.

- COMPLETE PACKAGE INCLUDED: Comes with 1x Pulse Oximeter, 2x AAA Batteries , 1x Lanyard for easy carrying, and 1x Instruction Manual. Ready to use right out of the box—no additional purchases needed.
How to compare the numbers
Neither a watch reading nor a fingertip reading is automatically the “correct” one in every situation. They are estimates made with different devices, in different positions and conditions; a difference between them does not by itself identify which reading is accurate. The available evidence does not support a universal accuracy ranking between Apple Watch and standalone fingertip devices.
The FDA says 95% to 100% is typical for oxygen saturation in most healthy individuals. It notes that readings can be lower for people with lung or heart problems and at higher altitudes. Apple likewise says most people have levels of 95–100%, while some may normally be below 95% and sleeping values may be slightly lower. These figures are general context, not a diagnosis or a universal personal cutoff. A health-care provider is the one who can diagnose conditions such as hypoxia.

Why a reading may be missing or misleading
Both methods can be affected by conditions around the measurement. Apple says motion, low skin perfusion (including from cold), some tattoos, fit, and certain arm or hand positions can interfere with readings. It also notes that a resting heart rate above 150 beats per minute can prevent a successful reading. A failed or unexpected watch measurement is not proof of low oxygen.
The FDA lists poor circulation, skin pigmentation, skin thickness, skin temperature, current tobacco use, and fingernail polish among factors that can affect pulse-oximeter accuracy. These limits are reasons to use care when interpreting either device—not a reason to assume that one technology is always more reliable for every person.

Which device makes sense for your situation?
- For occasional wellness tracking: Apple Watch can show intermittent estimates if Blood Oxygen is supported for your model and region. Its background readings are not continuous monitoring.
- For a spot check: A fingertip oximeter is designed for a direct, on-device reading of SpO₂ and pulse rate. Follow the particular model’s instructions and labeling.
- For a medical decision or a concerning symptom: Do not use either consumer reading as a diagnosis or as the sole basis for deciding what to do. Contact a health-care provider if you are concerned.
What to do with a low or unexpected result
- Check the conditions. For a watch reading, sit still and follow Apple’s fit and wrist-position guidance. For a fingertip device, warm and relax your hand, remove polish from the measurement finger, and wait for a stable value.
- Pay attention to symptoms as well as the number. The FDA advises: “Do not rely only on a pulse oximeter.” A device reading cannot tell you on its own whether you are well or unwell.
- Seek medical advice when appropriate. Contact a health-care provider if you are concerned or if symptoms are serious or worsening. Do not wait for a particular percentage to seek help for serious symptoms.
