A navigation-complete signal alone does not confirm that a web font has rendered. If the font request fails, waiting longer will not fix it.
Why fonts are missing from screenshots
A web font usually involves at least two requests: the page loads a font stylesheet, then the browser downloads a suitable font file. If either request is delayed or fails, the screenshot may capture fallback text or, depending on the loading behavior, blank space. Google Fonts tailors its stylesheet to the requesting browser and can provide script-specific subsets, so the capture browser’s requests and character coverage matter. Google Fonts’ getting-started documentation describes this stylesheet-and-font loading process.

Also distinguish the page’s content readiness from its font readiness. The application might render or change the target text after navigation, and the browser’s navigation milestone does not guarantee that the preferred typeface has been applied.

Diagnose the font before changing capture timing
- Inspect the affected text in the final image. Determine whether it is blank, rendered in a fallback face, or using the right family but the wrong weight or style.
- Check computed styles. In the page’s developer tools, inspect the affected element’s computed
font-family,font-weight, andfont-style. Confirm the requested face is declared and that the intended weight and style exist. - Inspect network requests. Check that both the font stylesheet and the font file request succeed. Look for blocked external domains, invalid URLs, authentication requirements, and requests that the capture environment cannot reach. These are diagnostic checks; access rules depend on the site and screenshot service.
- Check character coverage. Confirm the font includes the script and characters in the captured text. Google Fonts documents script subsets and browser-specific stylesheet generation in its getting-started guidance and CSS API documentation.
- Compare environments. Keep the capture browser engine and operating system consistent while debugging. Font availability and rendering can differ across environments.
Wait for the content and its fonts
Once the target content exists, use the browser’s Font Loading API to wait for fonts used by the document. document.fonts.ready resolves after loading and layout operations for used fonts have completed. It does not guarantee that every face declared in CSS loaded: an unused face may never be requested. MDN summarizes the promise as fulfilled once the document has completed loading fonts, layout operations are complete, and no further font loads are needed. See MDN’s Document.fonts reference.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
In browser automation, the essential sequence is: wait for the application’s target state, then await font readiness in the page, then take the screenshot. For example, with Playwright:
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.locator('#report').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.locator('#report').screenshot({ path: 'report.png' });
Replace the URL and selector with your page and target element. If your application changes the route, text, or styles after this wait, wait for that application-specific change and check document.fonts.ready again before capture. The readiness promise concerns fonts used by the document, so a change in content or styling can change which faces are needed.

For debugging, inspect the font set and individual face states in the page context:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsconst fontState = await page.evaluate(() => ({
status: document.fonts.status,
faces: [...document.fonts].map(face => ({
family: face.family,
weight: face.weight,
style: face.style,
status: face.status
}))
}));
console.log(fontState);
Use this alongside the network panel or request logs: a readiness signal tells you about used fonts and layout, while the requests help reveal why a face is unavailable.

Google Fonts display settings do not replace a capture wait
Google Fonts supports a display parameter such as display=swap. A display strategy affects what users see while a web font is loading; it does not ensure a screenshot is taken after the preferred font becomes available. Check the actual font request and wait for readiness rather than treating a display setting as a screenshot synchronization mechanism. See Google Fonts CSS API documentation.
When font readiness stalls
Treat a stalled document.fonts.ready as specific to the browser and environment until you can reproduce it. A Playwright issue opened September 29, 2026 and updated September 30 reports a hang during screenshot capture while waiting on font readiness in a particular Linux WebKit configuration; it does not establish a problem with all screenshot APIs or all browsers. See the specific Playwright issue report.

- Compare another engine or environment to determine whether the failure is environment-specific.
- Confirm the font URL is reachable from the capture environment and inspect the response, not just the page’s navigation status.
- Check whether the target content or styles are changing while the capture runs.
Playwright notes that screenshots can differ across browsers and platforms because of rendering, fonts, and other factors. For visual comparisons, keep the browser and operating system fixed where possible; see Playwright’s visual comparisons guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does document.fonts.ready mean every CSS-declared font has loaded?
No. It resolves after loading and layout work for fonts used by the document; unused declared faces may not load.
Recommended Free Tools
Can display=swap fix a screenshot that captures before the web font loads?
No. It affects how text is displayed during loading, but the capture still needs to wait for the intended face.
