How to Fix Font Rendering Differences in Happo Screenshots

A practical guide to diagnosing fonts that render differently in Happo screenshots, from worker access and font readiness to browser and glyph differences.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Happo screenshots show the wrong font, first check whether the intended web font loaded before capture and whether the Happo worker could reach the font host. Then compare the same page state across browser targets. Adjust diff tolerance only after you have ruled out fallback fonts, missing assets, and layout changes.

1. Find the affected capture in Happo’s report logs

Open the report’s logs and locate the specific snap request and component that shows the typography mismatch. Happo says these logs can help identify a font that took too long, a 404 asset, or asynchronous work that finished after capture. Start with the failing or visibly incorrect request rather than changing comparison settings across the suite. See Happo’s logs documentation.

2. Check that the font request succeeded from the worker

A page may work in your local browser while a Happo worker cannot retrieve its font file. If the request is blocked or unreachable, the browser can render a fallback font instead, changing letter shapes, line breaks, and element dimensions.

Inspect the font host and access rules

  • Identify the actual hostname serving the font in the page’s network requests; it may differ from the hostname serving the page.
  • Check the Happo worker logs for allowed and blocked hostnames, then confirm the font host is permitted and reachable.
  • If the font is served by a third-party provider or asset domain, verify that its request is not blocked by worker restrictions or your own environment.

Happo’s September 23, 2026 post describes an allowedHostnames mechanism for restricting requests. At the time of that post, the option was off by default; the post described a more restrictive default in a future major npm package version. Check the package version and configuration actually in use rather than assuming a default. See Happo’s post on controlling network requests.

3. Verify font readiness at screenshot time

Happo’s integration documentation says captures wait for fonts and other asynchronous assets. That does not establish that a particular font file loaded successfully in your run: a failed request can still leave the page using a fallback. Check the affected integration’s capture behavior and the snap request logs together. Use the documentation for your integration at Happo’s documentation.

When the capture may begin before an application-specific font-loading step completes, make that readiness part of the state Happo captures. Avoid adding an arbitrary delay as the first fix: it can make a flaky test slower without resolving a blocked or failed font request.

4. Compare browser targets and font-loading states

Happo documents captures in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and iOS Safari. Compare the same component and page state in each configured target, and determine whether each screenshot was taken after the intended font loaded.

Browsers can behave differently while a web font is loading. Google Fonts explains that Chrome and Safari may show blank space where web-font text will appear until loading completes, while Firefox may initially show the default font and redraw with the web font later. A difference that disappears after loading points to capture timing; a persistent difference after successful loading is more likely a browser or glyph-rendering difference. See Google Fonts’ technical considerations.

5. Check glyph coverage when only certain characters differ

If ordinary text matches but emoji, symbols, or particular characters do not, check whether the intended font contains those glyphs and which fallback font supplies missing ones. A Happo-authored cross-browser example notes that emoji appeared differently across browser targets. Inspect the specific characters rather than treating every character-level variation as a font-loading failure. See Happo’s cross-browser rendering example.

6. Use diff tolerance only for minor, understood noise

Happo’s color-delta tolerance can disregard small pixel differences such as anti-aliasing and image-compression noise. Consider it only after confirming the intended font loaded and the remaining difference is visually acceptable. Do not use tolerance to hide a fallback font, missing font asset, changed line wrapping, or other material layout change. See Happo’s documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a successful Happo run prove that the intended font loaded?

No. Check the font request and worker logs for the affected snap; a capture can complete while a failed font request leaves the browser using a fallback.

Should I increase Happo’s wait time to fix every font mismatch?

Not automatically. First establish whether the request succeeded and whether the font was ready at capture time; an extra delay will not fix an inaccessible font host.
