If your Fire TV Cube remote is unresponsive, the Cube can’t connect to Wi-Fi, or videos buffer or fail to play, start with the symptom-specific checks below. Replace remote batteries and retry pairing before resetting the remote; for network problems, run Network Diagnostics and restart the Cube and network equipment; if only one app is affected, clear that app’s data. Save a factory reset for last because it erases the device setup.
If the Fire TV Cube remote is unresponsive
Check the batteries and remote indicator
Replace the remote’s batteries with fresh AAA alkaline batteries, which Amazon recommends for best performance. If your remote supports troubleshooting mode, hold Rewind and Right together for three seconds, then press Menu to activate it. Press a remote button and check the LED:

- Slow red: the batteries are low.
- Fast red: the remote has a problem.
- Orange: the remote is not paired.
- White: check that the Fire TV device is on.
- Blue: the remote reports no issue; restart the Fire TV device.
Not every Fire TV remote has an LED or supports this mode. See Amazon’s remote troubleshooting instructions.
Retry pairing before resetting
- Place the remote within 10 feet (3 m) of the Cube.
- Hold Home until the on-screen pairing prompt appears; this takes about 10 seconds.
- If it does not pair, remove the batteries for 30 seconds, reinstall them, and try again. Use fresh alkaline batteries if needed.
- If seven controllers are already paired, remove one before adding another. The Fire TV app can also provide an alternative way to control the device or help with pairing.
Follow Amazon’s remote pairing instructions for the steps available on your setup.

Reset the remote only if pairing still fails
For most Fire TV remotes, Amazon’s reset sequence is:
- Unplug the Fire TV device from both power and HDMI for 60 seconds.
- Hold Left, Menu, and Back on the remote for 12 seconds, then release and wait five seconds.
- Remove the remote’s batteries.
- Reconnect the Fire TV device and wait for its remote-detection message.
- Reinstall the batteries and press Home. If pairing does not start, hold Home for 10 seconds.
Amazon documents different reset sequences for the Basic Edition remote and first-generation Alexa Voice Remote. Do not use the general sequence for those models; check the reset instructions for your exact remote.

If the Cube can’t connect to Wi-Fi
Run Network Diagnostics
If the screen says “Unable to Connect,” select Network Diagnostics and follow the recommendations. Where available, open Settings > Network and press Play/Pause to launch the status tool. Some devices also show Run Speed Test or Advanced. Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance describes these options.

Reconnect the Cube and restart the network
- Unplug the Cube’s power for 10 seconds, then reconnect it.
- If it still will not connect, open Settings > Network and toggle Wi-Fi off and on.
- To replace a saved connection, select the network, press Menu to forget it, then reconnect and enter the password.
- If the problem continues, unplug both modem and router for one minute. Reconnect the modem first and wait about a minute for its internet connection. Then reconnect the router and wait about a minute.
- If practical, move the Cube and router closer together.
If several devices have lost connectivity, the issue may be a wider network outage rather than a Cube fault.

Try Ethernet if Wi-Fi remains unreliable
Amazon lists Ethernet as an option for Cube streaming. Its setup information identifies an Ethernet port and says Ethernet can be used instead of Wi-Fi; the streaming instructions refer to the included Ethernet adapter. Package contents vary, so check your Cube generation and what was included before buying an adapter or cable. A wired connection is an alternative to improving Wi-Fi coverage, not a guaranteed fix.
If videos buffer, fail to play, or behave intermittently
Restart the Cube
Restarting is a reversible first step for playback trouble. Briefly unplug the Cube’s power adapter and reconnect it. Alternatively, hold the Cube’s Action button for 10 seconds to switch it off, then press Action again to restart. See Amazon’s Fire TV restart instructions.

Check whether the problem is limited to one app
If other apps play normally, clear data for the affected app:
- Open Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications.
- Choose the affected app, select Force Stop, then select Clear Data and follow the prompts.
- Restart the Cube by briefly unplugging its power adapter.
Clearing app data means you will need to sign in to that app again. Amazon’s app data instructions cover the process.

If multiple apps are affected
When content buffers or does not play across apps, restart the Cube and home networking equipment using the steps above. If possible, test an Ethernet connection after verifying whether the required adapter is included. Amazon’s Fire TV Cube streaming guidance also recommends Ethernet where possible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If a 4K Ultra HD title has picture trouble
For trouble specifically with 4K Ultra HD titles, Amazon recommends a high-speed HDMI cable. Check that the cable and the connected display are suitable for the 4K setup, and consult Amazon’s Fire TV Cube setup information. Keep this separate from general buffering: changing HDMI cabling addresses the video connection path, not a Wi-Fi signal problem.
Before buying a replacement remote or adapter
Accessories differ by Cube generation and package. Identify the exact Cube and remote model, check compatibility, and confirm whether an adapter is already included before ordering. Amazon’s setup and pairing pages do not provide a complete compatibility matrix, so a product title alone is not enough to establish fit.

Use factory reset only if remote, network, and app troubleshooting has not resolved the problem. A reset returns the device to setup and can require configuring it again. Amazon places reset after diagnostic, restart, reconnect, and router steps in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance; follow the instructions for your Cube before proceeding.
