If File Explorer keeps crashing or freezing in Windows 11, start with Windows Update and a restart, then check Windows system files with DISM and System File Checker. Microsoft’s File Explorer-specific guidance covers Explorer that will not open or start; it does not validate ten separate fixes for every crash or freeze. The ten actions below therefore distinguish direct fixes from diagnostic checks and recovery options, and put disruptive choices last.
Start with the lowest-impact checks
1. Check for Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install available updates. Restart if Windows asks you to. Microsoft includes checking for updates in its guidance for File Explorer that will not open or start: Fix File Explorer if it won’t open or start.

2. Restart the PC
Save your work, then choose Start > Power > Restart. Microsoft notes that restarting can complete pending updates even when Windows has not clearly prompted you to restart. This is a basic check, not a guarantee that a recurring crash will be resolved.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →3. Check whether the problem is limited to File Explorer
When the freeze happens, note whether other apps and the taskbar respond. If the whole PC is unresponsive, the issue may extend beyond Explorer; if other apps keep working, record what you were doing in Explorer immediately before it failed. This observation helps you describe the symptom and decide whether it is a startup failure or a crash during use; it is not a repair by itself.

Repair Windows system files
4. Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the prompt.
- Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. - Wait for the operation to complete before moving on.
DISM checks and repairs the Windows image that supplies files for repair. Microsoft says it normally obtains those files through Windows Update. If Windows Update itself is not working, Microsoft documents using a running Windows installation or a Windows side-by-side repair source; choosing a valid source is an advanced case, so do not substitute an arbitrary folder or installation image. See Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.
5. Run System File Checker after DISM
In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter sfc /scannow and press Enter. Let the scan finish and report its result; do not close the window while verification is running. Microsoft explicitly says, “You should run DISM prior to running the System File Checker.” These tools repair Windows system files, but Microsoft does not promise they will resolve every Explorer crash or freeze.
Use the timing of the problem to choose a recovery route
6. If Explorer trouble began after an update, consider uninstalling that update
If the crashes started directly after a Windows update, Microsoft says uninstalling the update might help. This is a scenario-specific recovery action, not a routine step for every Explorer problem. Review Microsoft’s Recovery options in Windows guidance before proceeding; available choices depend on Windows version and circumstances.
7. Troubleshoot Windows Update if updates fail
If Windows cannot check for or install updates, address that issue rather than repeatedly retrying the same update. Microsoft’s Troubleshoot problems updating Windows page covers Windows 11 and Windows 10 update problems and includes system-file repair guidance. Follow the instructions applicable to the update error you see.

Consider recovery only after simpler options
Microsoft advises starting with the least disruptive recovery option that fits the problem and backing up important files before actions that may cause data loss. The choices below are not interchangeable: select based on whether the issue followed an update and how much disruption you can accept.
| Option | When it may fit | Impact and availability |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall a recent update | Explorer problems began after a Windows update. | Targets the recent update; availability depends on the scenario and Windows version. See Microsoft’s Recovery options page. |
| Reinstall the current Windows version using Windows Update | You need to repair the current installation and the option is available on your PC. | Microsoft lists this for Windows 11 version 22H2 or later and says it reinstalls the current version without affecting files, apps, or settings. |
| Reset the PC | Explorer still will not start after less disruptive steps. | Microsoft says a reset might help. Recovery choices can affect data; back up important files first and check the reset option’s stated consequences. |
8. Back up important files before a recovery action
Copy important files to a suitable backup location before proceeding with recovery options that may affect them. An external USB drive is one possible destination, but buying one is unnecessary if you already have an appropriate backup method. Microsoft’s recovery guidance warns that some options can cause data loss.
9. Reinstall the current Windows version, if the option is offered
For Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, Microsoft lists reinstalling the current version through Windows Update as an option that does not affect files, apps, or settings. Its availability is not universal; check the recovery guidance and the options shown on your device. This is a repair route, not a promise that Explorer symptoms will disappear.
10. Reset the PC only as a later option
Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance says resetting the PC might help if Explorer still will not start after checking for updates and restarting. A reset is more disruptive than those first checks. Read the choices presented by Windows, understand what they keep or remove, and make a backup before continuing. Microsoft’s Explorer page is specific to failure to open or start, so it should not be read as proof that a reset is the right fix for every freeze or crash.
Quick Recap
When the problem remains
- Record whether Explorer fails at startup or only during a particular task, and note any update or error message that preceded it.
- Confirm that DISM completed before running SFC, and that SFC reached its final result.
- Do not repeat recovery actions blindly; use Microsoft’s recovery guidance to choose the least disruptive option appropriate to your Windows version and situation.
