First, copy the current stream key for the intended broadcast from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and update the value FFmpeg uses. If the key is current, check that it belongs to the selected stream and that the ingest server URL, application path, and protocol match the settings shown for that stream. YouTube’s first recommended fix for a third-party encoder startup problem is to get a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder (YouTube Help).
Fix the key and stream destination first
- Select the right broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live → Stream (labels may vary), then select the intended current or scheduled stream. Do not assume a key copied from another stream is interchangeable. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s credential for sending a feed to the selected stream (Manage live stream settings).
- Copy or reset the current key. Copy the key shown in that stream’s Live Control Room and replace the value saved in FFmpeg or in the wrapper, script, or configuration file that supplies FFmpeg’s destination. If validity is uncertain, reset or create a key there and update the encoder. YouTube says channel owners and managers can reset keys; editors and viewers cannot (YouTube Help).
- Compare every destination component. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key. FFmpeg represents RTMP destinations using a server, application, and playpath; some encoder configurations take the URL and key separately, while others combine them. Match the current Live Control Room values to the fields your setup expects instead of moving the key blindly between URL parts (YouTube’s encoder setup; FFmpeg protocol documentation; YouTube Live Streaming API).
In Linux shells, quote a destination that contains special characters. The example below is a template, not a verified universal command: the exact URL/key arrangement depends on the values and fields for your stream and encoder configuration.

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'RTMP_OR_RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'
Replace the placeholders locally with your input and the destination components in the format your setup requires. Do not publish a real key in a command example, screenshot, public support post, or unredacted log. Avoid putting the secret directly in a command that may persist in shell history; use a protected configuration file or another appropriate local secret-handling method. Environment variables should not be assumed to prevent process-list or log exposure.
Check RTMP versus RTMPS
Use the protocol and endpoint shown for the selected stream. RTMP and RTMPS are not interchangeable URL prefixes: changing the scheme while retaining the other protocol’s endpoint or path can create a connection problem that resembles a failed stream-key setup.

| Check | RTMP | RTMPS |
|---|---|---|
| Scheme and destination | Use the RTMP server and application/path provided for the stream. | Use an rtmps URL and the valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint and application name. |
| Transport | Cleartext RTMP; use the endpoint and port specified for the stream. | TLS; Google’s RTMPS guide specifies port 443 and notes that the correct server name is needed for SNI authentication. |
| Clues when it fails | A timeout can occur if cleartext RTMP is sent to an endpoint expecting RTMPS. | An SSL certificate error can indicate that an RTMP endpoint was used for an SSL attempt. |
Google recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content and documents its endpoint, path, TLS requirements, and troubleshooting (Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS). Diagnose TLS or connection failures separately from a credential rejection; do not switch protocols experimentally without changing the destination to the matching values.
Retest and use the actual error to narrow the cause
- Start FFmpeg and check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for an incoming preview and stream-health status.
- If YouTube receives no healthy feed, inspect the complete FFmpeg stderr output and confirm that the installed build supports the protocol and options your command uses.
- Check the FFmpeg version/build and outbound network path. YouTube recommends using an up-to-date encoder and checking encoder, connection, and stream health when a feed is problematic (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).
- Keep the distinction clear: a rejected or mismatched key is not the same diagnosis as a TLS handshake failure, timeout, unhealthy feed, or unrelated server issue. “Invalid key” may be an informal description rather than the exact status YouTube or FFmpeg reports.
The error guidance here is platform-neutral; Linux mainly affects how you quote and store the destination and which FFmpeg build is installed. UI labels and ingest values can change, so use the settings displayed for the current stream. No frequency or success-rate figure is established for this particular error.

When the key still appears invalid
- Verify that the selected Live Control Room stream is the one you intend to broadcast to and that the key was copied from that stream.
- Confirm that the key was updated in the actual source used by FFmpeg, including any wrapper, service unit, or script that may retain an older value.
- Compare the server, application/path, stream name or key, scheme, and port against the current stream settings. Check whether your configuration expects a separate key field or a combined destination.
- If using RTMPS, confirm the hostname, TLS connection, SNI name, and port 443; if using RTMP, use its matching endpoint rather than an RTMPS URL.
- If asking for help, share the redacted FFmpeg command, complete error output, FFmpeg version and configuration, chosen protocol, and whether Live Control Room receives a preview. Redact the key itself everywhere.
For quality or encoder settings after the feed connects, consult YouTube’s current recommendations rather than treating bitrate or resolution as a stream-key fix (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a pre-recorded YouTube channel that stays live 24/7, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. It streams the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
