If your YouTube stream becomes unstable while OBS is live and FFmpeg is sending data, pause FFmpeg’s network transfer briefly and watch OBS’s dropped-frame counter and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. If they improve, the concurrent upload is likely contributing to the problem. Then reduce or schedule that transfer, or lower the live stream’s bitrate so the combined outbound traffic fits your stable upload capacity with headroom.
First confirm that FFmpeg is using your upload connection
FFmpeg can process media locally, push a second live stream, or upload a file. Local processing alone does not compete for internet upload capacity; an active network send does. The key is whether OBS and FFmpeg are transmitting at the same time over the same constrained connection.

OBS describes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as signs of a network issue between the computer and the stream ingest server. YouTube likewise says total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. Applying that guidance to OBS plus an FFmpeg transfer is a practical diagnosis; the cited guidance does not document every possible OBS-and-FFmpeg setup. - Record the baseline. With OBS streaming and FFmpeg doing its usual task, note OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection indicator. Check YouTube Live Control Room for health messages and their timestamps; messages distinguish moderate from critical errors.
- Pause only FFmpeg’s outbound transfer. Keep OBS’s scene, encoder, and network settings unchanged for a short comparison. If dropped frames subside or stream health improves, shared upload load is likely a factor. This is a diagnostic inference, not a test prescribed by OBS or YouTube.
- Choose what should happen next. If the transfer can wait, schedule it for after the stream. If both jobs must overlap, measure stable upload capacity and reduce the live bitrate or resolution as needed. Resume FFmpeg only after accounting for the combined outbound load.
An improvement during the pause supports the bandwidth-competition hypothesis, but does not rule out other network problems. If nothing changes, continue through the wider checks below.

Budget upload bandwidth for every active sender
Measure outbound upload speed, not download speed, and consider other users and devices on the same connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom rather than using the full measured upload rate for streaming. Treat that as a margin, not a guarantee: available capacity can vary, and other traffic can consume it.
OBS’s 2024 connection troubleshooting guidance suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed for the video bitrate when diagnosing connection drops. That is OBS’s separate rule of thumb, not an additional amount to combine mechanically with YouTube’s 20% recommendation. If capacity is tight, stop or defer FFmpeg’s send first; if simultaneous operation is essential, reduce the live bitrate and reassess stability.

Set an achievable OBS stream bitrate
Use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate as a starting point—not as proof that your connection can sustain another upload at the same time. For example, YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists these video bitrates for 60 fps:

These are recommended video bitrates for a single stream, not universal internet-speed requirements. Leave headroom and include FFmpeg and other concurrent sends in the capacity calculation. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the selected codec and frame rate.

YouTube’s encoder guidance also specifies RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, supported video codecs, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Match settings to the guidance for your selected encoder and format; changing bitrate alone will not correct every kind of stream fault. Choose between pausing the transfer and lowering stream quality

If pausing FFmpeg does not help
Look beyond competing uploads. OBS lists Wi-Fi instability, VPN or security software interference, network-prioritization software, outdated network drivers, and router or ISP issues among possible causes of dropped frames. YouTube advises checking encoder output and CPU load when quality is poor in the encoder; if encoder output looks healthy, test the outbound internet connection. - Unstable Wi-Fi: Test over wired Ethernet if practical. A cable can improve the link between your computer and router, but it does not increase your ISP’s upload capacity.
- VPN or security software: Check whether it is affecting the connection, following the software vendor’s safe troubleshooting procedure.
- Network optimizer or prioritization tool: Check whether it is shaping or limiting OBS or FFmpeg traffic.
- Encoder or CPU problem: Review OBS’s encoder output and CPU load rather than treating every quality problem as an upload-capacity issue.
- Router, ISP, or broader connection problem: Test outbound stability and contact your ISP when the evidence points outside the computer.
Preflight the stream under realistic conditions
Before an important broadcast, test with audio and motion similar to the planned stream, and monitor stream health while it runs. If FFmpeg will be active during the event, include that workload in the preflight; a test without the competing transfer cannot show whether the combined load is sustainable. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing before the event and monitoring stream health.
