How to Fix FFmpeg YouTube Stream Lag Caused by Timestamp Errors

FFmpeg timestamp warnings do not always cause YouTube lag. Find where the problem begins, understand timestamp flags, and troubleshoot local output, ingest, and network conditions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FFmpeg timestamp warnings can point to a timing problem, but they do not prove that timestamps are causing your YouTube stream’s lag. First establish where the delay or poor playback begins: in the source or local output, at YouTube ingest, or only during viewer playback. Then match any timestamp change to the input, codec, stream-copy or re-encode mode, and muxer involved. There is no universal flag that fixes every case.

First locate where the lag begins

Compare three views of the stream: FFmpeg’s log, a local output or recording, and the stream’s status in YouTube Live Control Room. The first place the symptom appears helps separate a local encoding or source problem from an ingest or network problem. YouTube’s live streaming error messages guidance describes the health status and timestamped messages shown in Live Control Room; those messages are useful evidence about ingest, but a playback delay alone does not establish a timestamp fault.

  • Local output is already lagging or damaged: inspect the input/source path, FFmpeg errors, and CPU load. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output, its errors and CPU usage, and the quality of a local archive when troubleshooting. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
  • Local output looks right, but YouTube reports a problem: compare the Live Control Room health information and error messages with your encoder log, then check ingest configuration and outbound network stability.
  • Both local output and YouTube health look normal, but viewers report delay: do not assume a timestamp error. Check what viewers are seeing and whether the delay is consistent across playback conditions before changing timestamp options.

Lag can also arise from encoding load, source quality, ingest settings, or outbound connectivity. YouTube advises checking connection strength when the local stream is healthy but the live result is not.

Collect the details needed to diagnose a timestamp warning

Before editing the command, preserve enough information to see what FFmpeg is actually doing. A warning such as “Non-monotonic DTS” needs context: decode timestamps, presentation order, codec behavior, and stream-copy versus re-encoding all matter.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  • Save the exact FFmpeg command and the complete relevant log section, including lines before and after the warning.
  • Record the FFmpeg version and build, input container and codecs, and whether the output uses -c copy or re-encodes one or more streams.
  • Inspect input stream and timestamp information, then compare packet timestamps at input and output. Determine which stream is affected and whether the issue concerns presentation timestamps (PTS), decode timestamps (DTS), or both.
  • Note whether the input has variable frame rate, B-frames, a nonzero start time, or any timestamp-related options. These details can change which remedies are applicable.

Use the documentation for the installed FFmpeg build to confirm an option’s meaning, placement, and applicability. The FFmpeg documentation explains the timestamp options below, but it cannot identify the right setting without the command and media details.

Understand the timestamp options before changing them

These options do different jobs. Adding several at once can obscure the cause; change one relevant setting at a time and compare a short test against the original log and local output.

Option What it does What it does not establish
-copyts Keeps input timestamp values instead of FFmpeg’s usual timestamp sanitizing. It also preserves the initial start-time offset. It is not a general repair switch. Frame synchronization and muxer processing can still make output timestamps differ from input timestamps.
-start_at_zero When used with -copyts, shifts input timestamps so they begin at zero. It is not a stand-alone substitute for diagnosing irregular timestamps, and it does not guarantee that later timestamps are monotonic.
-copytb Sets the time base used when copying streams. FFmpeg documents that the demuxer time base may be needed in some variable-frame-rate stream-copy cases to avoid non-monotonically increasing timestamps. It is not a universal fix; whether it applies depends on the input and stream-copy path.
avoid_negative_ts An output muxer option that shifts timestamps according to its configured or default behavior. Shifting leading timestamps does not repair arbitrary non-monotonic sequences. Check the relevant muxer documentation before using it.
-fflags +igndts Ignores DTS in applicable situations. Ignoring DTS can produce incorrect reconstructed decode timestamps when B-frames reorder presentation. A FFmpeg-user mailing-list reply recommends removing this flag in one reported case; that example is not a universal diagnosis. See the case-specific discussion.

Work through the diagnosis in a controlled order

  1. Check whether the warning and lag coincide. Capture a short representative stream and note when the warning occurs relative to the visible or recorded problem. A warning that does not coincide with the symptom may not be its cause.
  2. Compare input and output timing. Inspect stream and packet timing at both ends. Establish whether timestamps start at an unexpected offset, move irregularly, or change during output, and identify the affected audio or video stream.
  3. Review timestamp-altering options. Check for -copyts, -start_at_zero, -copytb, -fflags +igndts, synchronization options, and muxer settings. Confirm each option’s position and scope for the installed build and output format.
  4. For non-monotonic DTS, consider decode order. Check whether DTS is being ignored or reconstructed and whether the video uses B-frames. B-frames can make presentation order differ from decode order; that alone is not proof that decode timestamps may be arbitrarily non-monotonic. Do not suppress the warning without understanding the source of the DTS values.
  5. Check YouTube’s ingest configuration separately. Match the encoder to the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance. Requirements and recommendations vary by ingest mode and resolution; consult the live table rather than treating one codec or bitrate as universal. YouTube’s guidance includes RTMP/RTMPS, supported video codecs, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not above four seconds.
  6. Separate local quality from transmission quality. If FFmpeg’s local output is already poor, investigate the source route and CPU load. If it is healthy but the YouTube stream is not, review Live Control Room health and outbound connection stability, following YouTube’s troubleshooting steps.
  7. Test one change at a time. Repeat a short test with representative movement and audio after each relevant adjustment. Keep the original command and logs so you can revert and compare rather than stacking unrelated flags.

Check keyframes, bitrate, and other YouTube ingest settings

Timestamp debugging and ingest compliance are separate checks. A stream can have well-formed timestamps and still suffer from a poor encoder configuration or unstable connection. YouTube’s current encoder settings page is the source for supported protocols, codecs, and resolution-specific bitrate guidance; follow its applicable row rather than copying a setting meant for a different ingest mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use a supported protocol and video codec for the selected YouTube ingest configuration.
  • Set frame rate within YouTube’s guidance (up to 60 fps) and use the recommended two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds.
  • Use CBR encoding and supported AAC or MP3 audio settings as specified for the chosen mode.
  • Test a representative stream before relying on it, and monitor stream health during transmission.

Because bitrate recommendations depend on resolution and ingest mode, a single bitrate value would be misleading here. Check YouTube’s live settings table for the exact combination you are sending.

Common symptoms and what to check

Symptom What to investigate Next action
FFmpeg reports non-monotonic DTS Whether DTS is ignored or reconstructed, whether B-frames are present, and whether timestamps change between input and output. Inspect the timestamp path before suppressing or shifting values. The -fflags +igndts mailing-list example is case-specific, not a general solution.
Lag or poor quality appears in the local output Input/source quality, FFmpeg errors, CPU load, and local recording quality. Follow YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting checks; investigate the local path before changing YouTube ingest settings.
Local output is healthy but YouTube reports stream-health errors Encoder configuration, ingest messages, and outbound network strength. Match settings to YouTube’s current encoder guidance and review Live Control Room’s timestamped messages.
Viewers report delay without a matching encoder warning Whether the delay is present in the local output or reflected in Live Control Room health. Do not attribute the delay to timestamps without evidence; check source, encoding, ingest, and network paths in order.
