To make a USB drive available at the same path every time a Raspberry Pi starts, identify its partition by UUID, create a mount point, and add a matching entry to /etc/fstab. Then test the mount before rebooting. This makes the files accessible; it does not play them, encode video, or start a YouTube broadcast. Those require a separately configured playback or capture application and encoder.
Choose between desktop automount and a fixed path
Raspberry Pi OS desktop can automatically mount some common filesystems at a label-based path under /media/pi. That may be sufficient if your application can use the path assigned to the drive. Raspberry Pi OS Lite does not provide desktop automounting. If an application needs a predictable path, or you use Lite, configure an explicit mount point with /etc/fstab.

Raspberry Pi’s documentation explains: “You can modify the fstab file to define the location where the storage device will be automatically mounted when the Raspberry Pi starts up.” See Raspberry Pi’s external-storage documentation.
Automatically mount a USB drive at a fixed path
1. Identify the intended partition
Connect the drive and inspect its UUID, device name, filesystem, size, label, and current mount point:

sudo lsblk -o UUID,NAME,FSTYPE,SIZE,MOUNTPOINT,LABEL,MODEL
You can also use sudo blkid to find filesystem UUIDs. Match the UUID and filesystem type to the partition you intend to use. Do not assume the partition will always be called /dev/sda1, copy a sample UUID, or guess its filesystem. Device names can vary; the UUID is the identifier used by the documented fixed-path approach.
2. Create the mount point
Choose a descriptive path, such as /mnt/stream-media, and create it if needed:
sudo mkdir -p /mnt/stream-media
The mount-point directory should be empty before mounting. Use this same path when configuring any application that reads media from the drive.

3. Back up and edit /etc/fstab
Before editing, make a backup of /etc/fstab. Add one line containing the actual UUID, mount point, and filesystem type. Raspberry Pi’s documentation shows this illustrative format:
UUID=5C24-1453 /mnt/mydisk fstype defaults,auto,users,rw,nofail 0 0
Replace 5C24-1453, /mnt/mydisk, and fstype with the values for your partition and chosen path. The sample values are not instructions to use those values unchanged. Filesystem helpers, ownership and permissions, and exFAT package requirements can vary with the operating-system release and filesystem; make sure the type matches the actual partition rather than treating this example as a universal line.
Raspberry Pi’s documentation says FAT or NTFS entries should add ,umask=000 immediately after nofail when full read/write access for every user is wanted. That option is permissive, not a general default: use it only if all-user access is actually appropriate for your system.

4. Validate the entry before rebooting
Ask the system to process the entries in /etc/fstab:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →sudo mount -a
If it reports an error, correct the entry before rebooting; a malformed fstab entry can cause boot-time problems. Check the resulting mount and its contents:
findmnt /mnt/stream-media
ls -la /mnt/stream-media
Confirm that the account running your streaming application can read the intended files. Reboot and check that the same path is mounted again. If you need the Pi to start normally when the removable drive is absent, test that case too. Raspberry Pi’s UUID-based example includes nofail, and its documentation notes that this lets the system start whether or not the storage device is attached.

Use the mounted files in a YouTube Live workflow
Mounting only makes the storage available at a path. It does not select a video, capture a camera, play media, encode, or broadcast. Configure those functions separately in the playback, capture, and encoder software you actually use. If the workflow reads a file from the USB drive, point its media input to the file under /mnt/stream-media (or your chosen mount path).
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream.
- Configure your encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a tutorial, terminal output, or screenshot. YouTube describes connection and preview steps in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder, and stream URL and key settings in Manage live stream settings.
- Set the encoder’s media input to the relevant content on the mounted drive if your workflow uses files there.
- Choose encoding settings your encoder and network can sustain, then test the actual stream before an event.
Encoder settings are separate from mount settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant-bitrate encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; these platform recommendations do not establish what an unspecified Raspberry Pi can encode.
| YouTube H.264 example | Recommended bitrate | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | YouTube recommendation; year not stated in the retrieved guidance, not a Raspberry Pi performance result |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | YouTube recommendation; year not stated in the retrieved guidance, not a Raspberry Pi performance result |
Choose a setting the particular encoder and network can sustain; the guidance does not establish model-specific Raspberry Pi encoding performance. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Check the encoder preview and monitor YouTube stream health during the test. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

Troubleshoot mount and stream problems
The mount command reports an error
- Recheck that the UUID, filesystem type, mount point, and fstab field order match the actual partition and entry format.
- Confirm that the mount-point directory exists and is empty before mounting.
- Check that the filesystem is supported by the installed OS and that any required filesystem helper is available; requirements can depend on OS release and format.
- Run
sudo mount -aagain and resolve errors before rebooting.
The drive is not mounted at the expected path after reboot
- Use
lsblkorblkidto verify that the UUID in/etc/fstabstill identifies the intended partition. - Check the fstab entry for a typo in the UUID, filesystem type, or mount-point path.
- Confirm the drive was attached during the test, then separately check startup behavior with it disconnected if that matters to your setup.
- On Raspberry Pi OS desktop, an automatically mounted drive may instead appear under a label-based path in
/media/pi; use an explicit fstab entry when the application needs a fixed path.
The application cannot read files from the mounted drive
- Verify that the drive is mounted at the exact path configured in the application and that the files are present there.
- Check access as the account that runs the application. Do not use broad permissions as a shortcut unless unrestricted access is intended.
- Remember that a successful mount does not configure playback or encoding; set the media input separately.
YouTube does not receive a healthy stream
- Check the encoder’s stream URL and key in YouTube’s stream settings; reset or replace the key if it has been exposed.
- Confirm that the encoder’s chosen codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio format match a supported configuration and what the machine and network can sustain.
- Test representative audio and moving video, inspect the preview, and monitor stream health. A mounted drive alone cannot establish that the encoder is producing a valid broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
