Fix FFmpeg subtitle problems by identifying the failing layer: track selection, subtitle type, text encoding, font discovery, ASS styling, script shaping, or path parsing. The right option depends on the subtitle file and the FFmpeg build running on your system; changing charenc, for example, can correct text decoding but cannot install a missing font.
Start by identifying the subtitle and FFmpeg build
Before changing options, record the exact command, complete error message, operating system, subtitle format, and output of ffmpeg -version. Check that your installed build includes the subtitles filter and its relevant options; available capabilities can differ between builds. The filter renders subtitles using libass. See the FFmpeg subtitles filter documentation and the FFmpeg 9.0 filter implementation.
Also establish whether the subtitles are a separate file, such as an SRT or ASS/SSA file, or a stream embedded in a video container. An embedded stream may be text-based or image-based, and that distinction determines whether the subtitles filter can render it.
Check the track and subtitle type
If a container holds more than one subtitle stream, inspect its streams with ffprobe and identify the intended track before rendering. The subtitles filter accepts stream_index and its alias si to select an embedded stream. FFmpeg’s automatic subtitle selection also depends on the output format and subtitle stream type, so do not assume it will choose the track you want. See the FFmpeg documentation.

The filter supports text subtitles and rejects a selected non-text subtitle stream. If the track is bitmap/image-based, select a text track if one is available, or use a workflow designed for image subtitles rather than trying to fix it with a text encoding option. The implementation’s text-stream check is documented in the FFmpeg 9.0 source.
Fix garbled characters by confirming the encoding
First determine the subtitle file’s actual character encoding. If it is UTF-8, do not add a guessed legacy encoding. For a file confirmed to use another encoding, set charenc on the subtitles filter to that encoding. FFmpeg passes this option to the subtitle decoder as sub_charenc; it affects text decoding, not fonts or visual styling.

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "subtitles=filename=subtitles.srt:charenc=CP1250" -c:a copy output.mp4CP1250 is only an example from a historical FFmpeg user report, not a general recommendation. Replace it only with the encoding verified for your file. The filter option is described in the current filter implementation.
Fix a missing or substituted font
For ASS/SSA subtitles, check the font family specified by the subtitle style and make sure that font is installed and visible to the environment running FFmpeg. A font available on your desktop may not be available to FFmpeg inside a container, server, or other runtime. Where supported, fontsdir adds a directory in which the filter can look for fonts.

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -vf "subtitles=filename=subtitles.ass:fontsdir=/path/to/fonts" -c:a copy output.mp4Matroska files can contain font attachments, but FFmpeg’s implementation checks attachment metadata and ignores an attachment without filename metadata. If the intended font is attached but still substituted, confirm that the attachment is usable and that the style’s family name matches the font. See the filter source.
Adjust ASS size or style only after decoding and fonts are right
If characters decode correctly and the intended font is available but the result still looks wrong, check the ASS script’s styles and intended video resolution. The filter’s original_size option supplies the original video dimensions used to scale fonts; force_style can override style parameters. These options address layout or appearance, not garbled text or an unavailable font. Refer to the filter documentation for the options supported by your build.

Check complex-script shaping
If decoded characters are correct but Indic or other complex-script text is assembled incorrectly, investigate shaping support rather than changing the character encoding. A 2021 FFmpeg developer discussion describes auto, simple, and complex shaping modes and says auto uses the best available libass shaper in that discussion. This is version-sensitive: check your installed build’s filter help before using a shaping option. See the FFmpeg developer discussion.
Resolve subtitle paths that FFmpeg cannot open
A filter input can be parsed twice: first by the shell and then by FFmpeg’s filtergraph syntax. Shell quotes alone may not protect punctuation such as commas, colons, brackets, quotes, or backslashes inside a filter expression. If FFmpeg says it cannot open a subtitle file, try a simple filename in a simple directory first, then add punctuation and escaping deliberately. A 2017 report describes square brackets in a subtitle filename causing a failure, but the exact escaping behavior can vary by shell and build. See the historical FFmpeg user report.

Match the symptom to the likely cause
