First find out which connection is failing: FFmpeg may be reconnecting while reading its input, or YouTube may be dropping the outgoing stream. The fix depends on that distinction. FFmpeg’s documented reconnect* options are for HTTP inputs; they are not a general fix for an RTMP or RTMPS publishing failure.
Identify the connection that is reconnecting
FFmpeg’s stream has two separate legs: it reads a source and writes the encoded stream to YouTube. A reconnect message alone does not tell you which leg failed. Before changing flags, locate the affected URL and protocol in the log, then compare its timing with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.

| What the evidence points to | Where to troubleshoot |
|---|---|
| Read or input error associated with the source URL | The input protocol and source availability. Use HTTP reconnect options only if that input is actually HTTP. |
| Write or output error associated with the YouTube destination | The destination URL, stream key, ingest protocol, upload reliability, encoder configuration, and YouTube stream-health messages. |
Capture useful evidence before changing the command
- Record the FFmpeg version and build, using
ffmpeg -version. - Save the exact command, but redact the YouTube stream key and any credentials before sharing it.
- Keep several log lines before and after a reconnect. Identify whether the error concerns reading the input or writing the output, and note the URL’s protocol (for example, HTTP or RTMPS).
- Check YouTube Live Control Room at the same time for stream-health messages. A mismatch between the FFmpeg log and YouTube status can help distinguish a source failure from an ingest or network problem.
The exact cause cannot be identified from the title alone. A reliable diagnosis needs the version, redacted command, relevant log excerpt, both connection protocols, network conditions, and any YouTube stream-health message.

If FFmpeg is reconnecting to an HTTP input
The FFmpeg HTTP protocol documents several distinct retry options. Confirm that the failing input uses HTTP, and check ffmpeg -h protocol=http on the installed build before using them; available behavior and defaults can depend on the version.

| Option | What it addresses |
|---|---|
reconnect |
Reconnect after a disconnection before the input reaches EOF. |
reconnect_at_eof |
Treat EOF as an error and reconnect; intended for live or endless streams. |
reconnect_on_network_error |
Retry on TCP or TLS errors during connection establishment. |
reconnect_on_http_error |
Retry for selected HTTP status codes, including categories such as 4xx or 5xx. |
reconnect_streamed |
Allow reconnects for streamed or non-seekable inputs. |
reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries, reconnect_delay_total_max |
Limit retry delay, number of attempts, or total retry time. |
Choose an option that matches the logged failure and the intended end-of-input behavior; do not add every retry flag indiscriminately. For example, treating EOF as an error changes what happens when a source ends normally. Retries cannot make an unavailable source available or correct a bad URL or authentication details.
For reference only, the FFmpeg 8.1 HTTP source documentation shows a maximum reconnect-delay default of 120 seconds and an unlimited retry default represented as -1. These are version-specific defaults, not guaranteed values for other builds. Check the installed build’s help output and set limits that fit the workflow. Persistent retries can hide an underlying fault while the stream remains broken.

If YouTube is dropping the outgoing stream
Verify the destination and stream key
In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the current stream URL and stream key, then check that the encoder uses both correctly. Treat the key as a secret: do not publish it in a command, screenshot, or log excerpt. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder configuration.

YouTube recommends streaming with RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Confirm the actual RTMPS endpoint shown in Live Control Room rather than substituting an example host. If the log reports a timeout or SSL error, verify the configured URL and protocol. For the documented invalid-certificate SSL error, YouTube also suggests checking the server URL/protocol and trying port 443 where appropriate; that is a targeted check, not a universal port change.

Check upload reliability and stream health
Run an upload-speed test and test with representative audio and motion before an important stream. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages while broadcasting. Adequate upload capacity and a stable path matter; a reconnect loop by itself does not show whether the source, local network, or ingest service is responsible.
Compare encoder settings with YouTube guidance
- Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval if possible; YouTube recommends no more than four seconds.
- Verify that the protocol and codec combination is supported for the intended stream.
These settings can expose a configuration mismatch, but YouTube’s guidance does not say that CBR or a particular keyframe interval cures a transport disconnection. Continue to use the logs and stream-health messages to diagnose a failing connection.

Avoid treating retries as the repair
Retry behavior is useful when a temporary interruption is expected, but an indefinitely retrying process can mask a persistent fault. Where the protocol supports it, use retry bounds suitable for the job, then resolve the underlying source, URL, key, network, or service-side problem indicated by the evidence. Do not apply FFmpeg’s HTTP input reconnect flags to an RTMP/RTMPS output and call that a YouTube publishing fix.
