Yes. A Mac mini can sleep if its power settings allow it, and sleep may interrupt the streaming app or other running processes. On a desktop Mac, go to Apple menu > System Settings > Energy and turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. You can let the display turn off separately while keeping the Mac awake. This setting helps prevent sleep; it does not guarantee a YouTube stream will recover from an app, network or power failure.
Stop your Mac mini from sleeping while streaming
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Energy in the sidebar.
- Turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off.
- In System Settings > Lock Screen, set when the display turns off to suit your setup. The display timeout is separate from the computer’s sleep behavior, so the display can go dark while the Mac remains awake.
These labels and options can vary by macOS version and Mac model. If you do not see the setting, check Apple’s instructions for desktop Mac Energy settings and your version of macOS: Change Energy settings on a Mac desktop computer.

Plan for restarts and power interruptions
Preventing automatic sleep does not protect a stream from a power outage or make the streaming app launch again after a restart. Apple’s Mac mini server guidance recommends configuring the Mac to start automatically after a power failure. Review System Settings > Energy for Start up automatically after a power failure, where available. Apple also documents UPS Options in desktop Mac Energy settings.
A compatible uninterruptible power supply (UPS) may help with some local power interruptions, depending on its compatibility and runtime. It does not by itself protect the internet connection or ensure a YouTube livestream resumes. Apple also cautions that after a restart, including one following a power outage or macOS update, some server apps may need to be relaunched manually unless set to open automatically. Its guidance does not establish YouTube-specific reconnection behavior.

Separate the failure into sleep, app, power and network possibilities rather than assuming the sleep setting caused every interruption.

- Check the streaming app: after a restart, confirm the app is open and its stream is running. If needed, configure it to launch automatically; the exact steps depend on the app.
- Check power: review automatic startup after power failure and any available UPS options if interruptions are occurring. A UPS does not ensure network continuity.
- Check network and background activity: if sleep or wake behavior is unexpected, Apple advises checking sleep settings, background activity, connected devices, Spotlight indexing and other possible causes. Use Apple’s guide: If your Mac sleeps or wakes unexpectedly.
Apple’s published guidance explains macOS sleep and server setup, not the frequency with which Mac minis sleep during YouTube streams or a guaranteed livestream recovery rate.
