How to Fix FFmpeg Reconnect Errors During a Church’s Continuous YouTube Stream

FFmpeg reconnect flags mainly cover HTTP inputs—not every YouTube output failure or a crashed process. Use logs and YouTube stream health to find the cause and test recovery.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First identify whether FFmpeg lost its source input, failed to send to YouTube, or exited altogether. FFmpeg’s reconnect options are HTTP protocol controls for inputs; they do not guarantee that YouTube ingest will reconnect or restart a terminated FFmpeg process. Match the fix to the failure, compare FFmpeg’s timestamped log with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health message, then test recovery before a service.

Identify which connection failed

FFmpeg can read media from one endpoint and send the resulting stream to another. A church setup might read a file, camera, network feed, or HTTP stream, then publish to YouTube using the event’s Stream URL and stream key. A failure on one side is not fixed by retry settings intended for the other.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Input failure: FFmpeg cannot open or continue reading its source. HTTP reconnect options may help if the input is HTTP and the failure matches the option’s documented trigger.
  • Output failure: FFmpeg cannot connect to or write to YouTube ingest. Check the destination URL, key, RTMP/RTMPS connection, network and YouTube’s stream-health message.
  • Process or host failure: FFmpeg exits, or the computer/server loses power or connectivity. Reopening an HTTP input does not restart a dead process or repair the host; a separately tested process supervisor or backup encoder may be needed.

Start by saving the full command with credentials removed, the complete log around the failure, ffmpeg -version, the input and output URL schemes (redact credentials and the stream key), and the corresponding Live Control Room error. Do not publish or share a stream key.

What FFmpeg’s reconnect options do—and do not do

FFmpeg documents these reconnect* settings as HTTP protocol options. reconnect retries after a disconnect before end-of-file (EOF); reconnect_at_eof treats EOF as an error and triggers reconnection, which is intended for live or endless sources; and reconnect_streamed applies to streamed, non-seekable inputs. reconnect_on_network_error applies to TCP/TLS errors during connection, while reconnect_on_http_error accepts a comma-separated list of HTTP codes or classes. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation and FFmpeg’s current HTTP protocol source.

These settings do not automatically supervise every output protocol and do not restart FFmpeg after it exits. In particular, HTTP input retries are not a general repair for an RTMP/RTMPS output error. The current upstream source has version-sensitive defaults: reconnect and reconnect_streamed are disabled, and reconnect_delay_max is 120 seconds. Packaged builds can differ, so check the installed build’s help rather than assuming those defaults or option availability.

How to set HTTP reconnect options on an input

For an HTTP source, the options must appear before the -i they configure. This illustrative pattern is not a universal command; replace the placeholder and retain only settings appropriate to the source and observed error.

ffmpeg -reconnect 1
  -reconnect_streamed 1
  -reconnect_at_eof 1
  -reconnect_delay_max 30
  -i 'https://SOURCE.example/live'
  ...output options...
  'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST.example/STREAM_PATH/STREAM_KEY'
  1. Check support in the installed binary with ffmpeg -h protocol=http. Confirm the options exist before adding them.
  2. Use reconnect for a disconnect before EOF. Consider reconnect_streamed when the HTTP source is streamed and non-seekable.
  3. Enable reconnect_at_eof only if EOF means the live or endless source dropped unexpectedly. On a finite file, EOF is normal; treating it as an error can cause unwanted retries or looping.
  4. Choose a bounded delay and retry policy for the source and operating conditions. FFmpeg documents retry controls including maximum retries and total reconnect delay; do not blindly retry permanent authentication, invalid URL, or unsupported-media errors.

Reconnect behavior depends on the actual failure and installed version. A larger delay cap is not a guarantee that FFmpeg will recover.

Fix YouTube output and ingest errors separately

If the log points to opening or writing the output, verify that the destination is the Stream URL and key for the correct scheduled or live event. YouTube’s live streaming encoder setup guidance explains how to obtain the stream details. Re-copy them if needed, check that the protocol and server are correct, and inspect firewall, network and TLS errors. Rotate the key only if it is compromised or otherwise needs rotation, then update the encoder.

For an RTMPS SSL error, YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance says to verify that the URL uses rtmps and the correct server. If the URL is correct but the error persists, try specifying port 443. Compare the exact error and timestamp with the Live Control Room status rather than changing input retry flags at random.

Check YouTube stream health and encoder settings

In Live Control Room, inspect the preview, stream health and any error-specific instructions. YouTube advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” Its encoder settings guidance treats encoding compatibility separately from network retry behavior.

  • Use RTMP or RTMPS as supported by the event setup.
  • Use constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • YouTube’s current guidance, accessed October 4, 2026, recommends H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for those formats, not universal requirements; select a bitrate appropriate to the production and stable connection.
  • YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio in its current encoder recommendations.

Change encoding only when the evidence points to ingest or compatibility. A codec or bitrate change is not a substitute for diagnosing an HTTP source disconnect.

Test a recovery plan before worship or an event

  1. Run a preflight with representative speech, music and motion. Confirm YouTube receives the stream and the preview and stream health look right.
  2. Prepare the encoder early enough to catch configuration or network problems before the service begins.
  3. If relying on a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, as YouTube’s setup guidance recommends. Confirm the backup actually reaches the event.
  4. Watch the public stream during the test and verify any local recording the church keeps.
  5. Record what happened, including FFmpeg’s log, YouTube’s health message and timestamps, then adjust the recovery plan based on the failure layer observed.

A retry flag alone cannot promise uninterrupted uptime. If FFmpeg exits or the host fails, arrange and test process-level recovery or backup-encoder failover; the HTTP input options cover neither.

Common reconnect problems and fixes

  • FFmpeg keeps retrying but the source never returns: Check for a permanent HTTP error such as bad credentials, an invalid URL or unsupported media. Correct the underlying source issue rather than extending retries indefinitely.
  • The source reaches EOF and the stream stops: If the source is meant to be endless, consider whether reconnect_at_eof is appropriate. If it is a finite file, EOF is expected; do not enable EOF reconnection as a generic fix.
  • FFmpeg reports an RTMP/RTMPS connect or write error: Validate the event’s Stream URL and key, server and protocol, then check the network and Live Control Room health. HTTP input retry options do not fix this output path.
  • An RTMPS SSL error remains with the expected URL: Recheck the server and rtmps scheme; if they are correct, try port 443 as YouTube advises.
  • The FFmpeg process has exited: Input reconnect options cannot revive it. Determine why it exited and use a separately tested process restart or backup encoder if continuous operation requires it.
  • The stream connects but YouTube reports a format or health problem: Follow the specific Live Control Room message and verify the encoder settings. Do not treat a bitrate or keyframe adjustment as the answer to an unrelated source-network failure.
