You can run a camera-free 24/7 YouTube channel by sending prerecorded puppet episodes or rendered animation, with narration and cleared audio, to YouTube Live through an encoder such as OBS. Make the stories before streaming, connect the encoder to a YouTube Studio stream using its stream key, and plan for interruptions and replay archiving separately from the continuous broadcast.
What “without a camera” means
The camera does not need to be active while the channel is live. YouTube supports encoder streams separately from webcam streams, so the live feed can consist of puppet footage recorded earlier, stop-motion, still-frame sequences, animation, or composites, together with narration, music, and effects. The encoder sends that finished or assembled audio-and-video feed to YouTube Live. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

This is different from going live from a camera: the channel is broadcasting prepared story material, not a live view of puppets being performed. A continuous stream also does not mean YouTube will create one complete replay covering every hour.
Build a story library before going live
Write distinct episodes
Develop several original stories before launching the loop. You can keep recurring characters, a recognizable visual style, or a short series intro, but give each episode its own substance: a different premise, meaningful character choice, conflict, setting, or resolution. YouTube’s July 15, 2025 policy update renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” to clarify its treatment of repetitive or mass-produced work. Make and assemble the episodes
- Choose a visual approach. Film puppet scenes in advance, make stop-motion, create animation, or combine illustrations and other original visuals. None requires a camera to remain on during the broadcast.
- Record narration and prepare audio. Add music and sound effects only when you have the rights needed for their use. A microphone may help with voiceover, but YouTube’s encoder setup does not require a particular microphone.
- Export each episode as a complete audio-and-video program. Check that the visuals, narration, music, and effects are all present and synchronized. Keep source files and a local copy of finished episodes.
- Arrange episodes for continuous playback. Decide the order, how often stories repeat, and whether breaks or transitions belong between them. A single prepared feed or a playlist-based encoder workflow can provide the material for the live stream.
Set up YouTube Live and OBS
Check channel eligibility
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to go live. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance before building a launch schedule.
Create an encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose encoder streaming rather than webcam streaming.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a credential: anyone who obtains it could send a feed to your broadcast. Do not publish it or include it in episode files.
- Open OBS and use its Auto-Configuration Wizard to establish a starting configuration for your computer and connection. OBS provides x264 streaming guidance for more detailed encoder setup.
- In OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube or the appropriate YouTube service option, then enter the stream key or connect the account if that option is offered. Use OBS’s supported YouTube workflow rather than manually implementing a delivery protocol.
- Add the prepared episode feed or media source, confirm that both video and audio meters respond, and start the encoder. Check YouTube Studio’s preview and stream health before sharing the live link.
There is no single correct bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or computer requirement for every puppet channel. Those choices depend on the exported video, computer capacity, upload connection, and desired quality. Start with the encoder’s recommended configuration and test a private or unlisted stream before committing to a continuous public schedule.

Plan for a real 24/7 operation
Protect against interruptions
A continuous broadcast depends on the encoder, the computer or host running it, power, and a working internet connection. Monitor the stream and have a restart plan for failures. The available platform guidance does not establish that any particular computer, connection, cloud host, or encoder setup will stay live without interruption.

Handle replays separately
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends making a local archive. If a complete YouTube replay matters, end and restart sessions before they reach 12 hours rather than relying on one uninterrupted daily stream to archive. Keep your own local recording as a backup. Use the supported ingest path
Most creators should configure a supported encoder instead of implementing a protocol themselves. For context, YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance specifies one encoded stream with muxed audio and video over HTTPS and supported media segments; its DASH guidance has its own container, segment-timing, and initialization requirements. These are protocol requirements for those ingest methods, not settings every OBS creator needs to enter manually. See the YouTube Live Streaming API ingestion protocol guidance.
Keep the stream rights-safe and policy-aware
Clear every element
YouTube scans live streams for third-party material, including other broadcasts. A match can replace the feed with a placeholder and prompt a warning; unresolved material can lead to temporary interruption or termination. A license does not necessarily prevent a live interruption: the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm permissions for music, effects, artwork, fonts, puppet designs, and any sourced clips for the rights and territories involved. Make episodes meaningfully original
Recurring characters and a consistent series format are not the same as repeating the same episode with superficial changes. Build distinct story substance into each installment, and avoid a channel made from near-identical, mass-produced templates if you intend to apply for monetization. Eligibility is assessed under YouTube’s channel monetization policies; continuous streaming by itself does not guarantee views, watch hours, or revenue.
Disclose realistic synthetic material when required
YouTube’s altered or synthetic content guidance says clearly unrealistic animation does not need disclosure under its examples. Disclosure is required for AI-generated or meaningfully altered content that appears realistic, such as a realistic person made to say something they did not or a realistic scene that never happened. If your workflow includes realistic synthetic people, places, or events, review YouTube’s current altered or synthetic content disclosure guidance and use the applicable Studio disclosure setting.

Troubleshooting a camera-free puppet stream
