For a local concat script, check its first line, every file path, stream compatibility, and duration-derived timestamps; then inspect the log around the missing entry. Looping and real-time pacing options cannot fix a malformed list or unreadable file.
First identify the playlist FFmpeg reads
A local concat script is a text file containing directives such as file '/media/one.mp4'. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads those files in sequence as though their packets had been joined. An HLS playlist, typically an .m3u8 file, is a different format. YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements apply when you send HLS to YouTube, not merely because your RTMP output is going to YouTube Live.

Confirm the input format and the relevant command option. If the command uses -f concat before -i playlist.txt, investigate the concat-script checks below. If you are sending HLS to YouTube, use the HLS branch later in this guide.
Check a local concat script entry by entry
Verify the header and syntax
A basic concat script can look like this:
ffconcat version 1.0
file '/media/one.mp4'
file '/media/two.mp4'For automatic format recognition, the optional header must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 on the first line, without extra whitespace or a byte-order mark. If the script has no header, FFmpeg may still read it when the concat demuxer is explicitly selected with -f concat.

Check that each file directive follows concat-script quoting and escaping rules, especially for paths containing spaces or special characters. Verify that every named file exists and that the account running FFmpeg can read it. Use -safe 0 only when necessary for paths rejected by the default safety policy; it relaxes path restrictions, but does not correct a typo or make an absent or unreadable file available.
Compare the media streams
The concat demuxer expects files to have matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. Inspect the entries before, at, and after the apparent skip with ffprobe. Compare the number and type of streams, video codec and dimensions, audio codec, sample rate, channel layout, and time base where applicable.
A mismatch can prevent seamless packet concatenation or lead to errors. Stream-copy concatenation cannot bridge arbitrary differences. If the inputs do not match, normalize or transcode them to compatible streams before concatenating, or choose an encoding workflow that handles each input appropriately.

Check duration and timestamps
FFmpeg adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and each following file starts where the previous one ends. It calculates those positions using file durations. If a duration is wrong—for example, because it was inferred inaccurately or the file is truncated—subsequent timestamps may be shifted, and differences in stream lengths can create gaps.
Compare the duration FFmpeg probes for each file with its actual playable duration. If a probe is wrong and you know the reliable duration, an explicit duration directive in the concat script can override the inferred value. Do not assume that a file absent from the visible sequence is necessarily missing: it may instead be present but silent, black, timestamp-shifted, incompatible, or rejected later in the pipeline.
Separate looping and pacing from playlist discovery
For a file input that should repeat, -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping. -re reads file input at real-time speed. These options affect repetition and pacing; they do not repair invalid script syntax, inaccessible paths, incompatible streams, or incorrect durations. Place input options before the input they apply to, and test a short run while watching the FFmpeg log before reconnecting the live output.

This illustrative command shows the shape of a concat-to-RTMP workflow, not a universal recipe:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/REPLACE_WITH_STREAM_KEY'Replace the path and ingest URL with your actual values. The example re-encodes video and audio; copy mode may work only if the sources and output constraints are compatible. Confirm the ingest protocol and output format you selected before using a final command. Never expose a real YouTube stream key in logs, screenshots, or a public support post.
If you are sending HLS to YouTube
This branch applies only when FFmpeg sends HLS to YouTube. Google’s YouTube HLS ingest guidance says YouTube supports Media Playlists and ignores Master Playlists. It also says media-segment filenames should remain unique across encoder reboots and stream restarts. Check that the playlist being submitted is a Media Playlist and that restarted encoders do not reuse segment names. These checks do not fix a local concat script because they concern a different playlist layer.

Use the log to isolate the actual failure
Without the command, playlist, FFmpeg version, media metadata, and relevant log lines, there is no reliable way to identify why one particular entry was skipped. To narrow it down:
- Record the installed version. Run
ffmpeg -version; current FFmpeg documentation may not match an older installed release. - Preserve the exact input order. Review the concat script or HLS playlist and confirm the suspect entry’s position.
- Inspect neighboring files. Use
ffprobeon the entry immediately before and after the apparent skip, and on the suspect file itself. - Read the log around the transition. Look for file-open errors, stream or codec mismatches, timestamp warnings, and muxer rejection. Distinguish an entry never opened from packets that are present but produce silence, black video, a gap, or a timestamp shift.
- Test locally before going live. Run a short diagnostic with the same input path and options, but keep the stream key private. Change one suspected issue at a time so the log shows whether it mattered.
For help diagnosing a particular skip, gather the complete command with credentials and private details redacted, the playlist text, ffmpeg -version, log lines around the first omitted item, and ffprobe output for the neighboring entries. Preserve the file order and error text when redacting paths.
