An FFmpeg “Invalid DTS” warning is about packet timestamps; it does not, by itself, prove that YouTube rejected your playlist or that the stream failed. The right fix depends on whether FFmpeg is reading a playlist or segments, generating HLS, or pushing HLS to YouTube—and whether you are copying or re-encoding the streams. First identify where the warning occurs and inspect timestamps across adjacent segments. Avoid adding timestamp flags or a playlist discontinuity marker as a blanket fix.
What the “Invalid DTS” warning means
DTS is the decoding timestamp; PTS is the presentation timestamp. A decoder uses DTS to determine packet decode order, while PTS indicates when the decoded content should be presented. FFmpeg 9.0 muxer source logs Invalid DTS: … PTS: …, replacing by guess when a packet’s DTS is greater than its PTS and substitutes a guessed timestamp. FFmpeg also handles non-monotonic DTS by adjusting timestamps in ordinary operation, with a warning that the resulting output timestamps may be incorrect. The warning can therefore affect timing or synchronization, but its presence alone does not establish that the output failed.

That mux-side warning is not the same thing as a YouTube HLS ingest rejection. Find out whether FFmpeg is reading media, writing a playlist, or sending HLS to YouTube before choosing a remedy.

- The complete FFmpeg command, including input and output options, and the output of
ffmpeg -version. - The exact input type: an HLS manifest, local MPEG-TS segments, or another container or protocol.
- The lines immediately before and after the warning, plus whether it appears while reading the input or writing the output.
- Whether the command uses stream copy, such as
-c copy, or decodes and re-encodes the media. - The workflow direction: receiving or processing a playlist, generating HLS, or pushing HLS to YouTube.
- The playlist and the segments on either side of the warning, if available, so timestamps can be compared at the boundary.
Diagnose timestamp order before changing options
1. Check the segment boundary
Look for a timestamp reset or discontinuity where one segment ends and the next begins. A playlist may combine segments from recordings or encodes whose timestamp timelines do not line up. That is a possibility to investigate, not a diagnosis: the warning alone does not reveal which segment or operation caused it.
Use FFprobe to inspect packet timestamps in the affected input or segments. For example, to list packet PTS, DTS, and duration from a local media file:
ffprobe -v error -show_packets -show_entries packet=pts_time,dts_time,duration_time -of csv=p=0 input.ts

- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
Replace input.ts with the affected file. For an HLS input, inspect the manifest and the relevant adjacent media segments; if your FFprobe build can open the manifest, you can also run the command on the manifest. Compare the end of one segment with the start of the next, and look for DTS that moves backward or resets. Keep the original files and test any change on a short copy of the affected sequence.
2. Establish whether streams are copied or re-encoded
With stream copy, FFmpeg passes encoded packets through rather than rebuilding them through a decode-and-encode process. If the source timestamps are inconsistent, copying does not inherently correct the underlying segment timeline. Re-encoding changes the processing path, but it is not a guaranteed repair for a discontinuous input and may introduce quality loss or require more processing capacity. Choose between these paths only after confirming where the timestamps become inconsistent.
3. Review timestamp-preservation options together
Do not add -copyts as a generic fix. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation says -dts_delta_threshold corrects timestamp discontinuities for formats that accept them, including MPEG-TS and HLS; its documented default is 10 seconds. The same documentation says this automatic correction is disabled by -copyts, except when timestamp wrapping is detected. If preserving original timestamps was not intentional, removing -copyts can be a useful controlled baseline test—but the result depends on the input and command.

Review -start_at_zero, -copytb, and any discontinuity-related settings in context rather than stacking options until the warning disappears. Record the original command, change one relevant setting at a time, and compare fresh logs and playback against the same short sample. The documentation behavior can vary by FFmpeg version; check the version actually running.

YouTube’s HLS ingest constraints are separate from timestamp correctness. Its live guidance requires MPEG-TS segments 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, no byte-range mode, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. Satisfying those requirements does not prove that timestamps within or between segments are valid.
- Confirm the output is MPEG-TS and the segment durations are within the stated 1–4 second range.
- Confirm the playlist rolls forward and has no more than five outstanding segments.
- Do not use byte-range mode for this ingest path.
- Use HTTPS POST/PUT as required by YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance.
- Check packet timestamps independently; playlist compliance does not repair bad DTS.
YouTube’s general live encoder guidance recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval that does not exceed 4 seconds. These are encoder recommendations, not a fix for invalid packet timestamps. Test the stream and monitor YouTube stream health after making changes.

If FFmpeg is generating the HLS playlist
FFmpeg’s HLS muxer can insert #EXT-X-DISCONTINUITY before the first segment’s information. Consider signaling a discontinuity when the segment sequence has a real timeline discontinuity and your playlist-generation flow supports it. The option’s existence does not establish that inserting the marker will repair invalid DTS values. Inspect the segment timestamps and test the resulting playlist rather than treating the marker as a substitute for diagnosis.
Verify a change and troubleshoot the result
- Run the altered command on the same short sample and save the full new log.
- Check whether the warning is gone, changed, or still appears at the same segment boundary.
- Inspect packet timestamps again and confirm the sequence behaves as intended across that boundary.
- Test playback for audio/video synchronization and continuity, then run a YouTube test stream and monitor stream health if the destination is YouTube.
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The warning appears while FFmpeg is writing output. | Check the mux-side timestamp handling and the input packet timestamps; do not assume YouTube caused the warning. |
| The warning begins at a segment boundary. | Compare timestamps in the adjacent segments and inspect for a reset or actual discontinuity. |
The command includes -copyts. |
Confirm that preserving source timestamps is intentional; test without it as a controlled baseline when it is not. |
| The playlist meets YouTube’s HLS rules but the warning remains. | Check packet timestamps separately; ingest-format compliance and timestamp correctness are independent. |
| The warning disappears but playback is out of sync. | Do not treat a quieter log as proof of correct output. Recheck packet timing and test a known-good short sample. |
If the cause remains unclear, the useful diagnostic bundle is the command, FFmpeg version, surrounding log lines, input type, playlist, and affected adjacent segments. A specific command recommendation requires those details.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings rather than to debug an FFmpeg-generated HLS feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not repair an FFmpeg playlist or broadcast from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
