Set a browser locale for each Playwright test, start from a clean consent state, assert the banner’s localized content, then compare a screenshot with a reviewed reference. Locale emulation controls browser language signals; it does not translate your site or reset consent data for you.
Set the locale for each test
Playwright locale is configured on a browser context, through a test’s use options, or in a project. It affects navigator.language, the Accept-Language request header, and locale-sensitive date and number formatting. It does not set the test runner’s timezone. Configure a project per locale
For a growing locale matrix, projects make each run identifiable and allow locale-specific screenshot references:

});Project names such as chromium-de-DE clarify which configuration produced a result. Playwright supports snapshot path templates that can include project-name tokens; use one if your test configuration needs explicit locale-specific reference paths. See the test configuration reference.
Configure one test or describe block
For a focused case, set the locale at the file or describe scope with test.use. Keep tests grouped by locale when that makes the setup clearer:

The example assumes the banner is exposed as a dialog; consent components do not share a universal role, accessible name, or wording. Prefer a user-facing accessible locator where the implementation provides one, and otherwise use a stable locator for the visible component. Playwright recommends testing user-visible behavior; see its testing best practices.
Make the first-visit state reproducible
Consent interfaces commonly remember a user’s choice, so a later test may correctly encounter no first-visit banner. Playwright Test runs tests in isolated browser contexts, separating browser-managed state such as cookies and local storage. Do not load a storage state that already contains consent for a test intended to cover a first visit. See browser contexts.

Use Playwright Test’s normal per-test context rather than sharing a logged-in or consented state.
- Reset non-browser state if needed. If consent is stored server-side or through another application-specific mechanism, clear it through a test fixture or documented test endpoint. The reset method depends on the application and its consent platform.
- Check the expected state before the screenshot. Assert visibility, a localized text fragment, and any important controls. This helps distinguish a correct visual change from a missing banner or language fallback.
Web assertions retry until the expectation passes or times out; screenshot assertions separately wait for capture stability. That makes an explicit state assertion useful even when the screenshot itself appears plausible. See the assertions guide.
Choose the right screenshot scope
Use a locator screenshot when the question is whether the banner’s own layout, text wrapping, and controls are correct. Use a full-page screenshot when its overlay, backdrop, placement, or relationship to page content matters:

Stabilize the rendering conditions
Visual output can vary by operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Create and compare baselines in the same environment where practical, and keep viewport, color scheme, fonts, and dynamic test data controlled. Playwright disables animations for screenshot assertions by default. Its screenshot options also support a stylePath stylesheet for narrowly hiding volatile content, including content in shadow DOM and frames. Do not hide the banner or any element whose changes the test is meant to detect.

Create and update references deliberately
On an initial run, Playwright creates reference screenshots. Review and commit them as test artifacts. When a translation or design change is intentional, regenerate snapshots with:
npx playwright test --update-snapshotsInspect the resulting image diff before accepting it. Avoid broad pixel tolerances as a substitute for stabilizing the test; a loose threshold can conceal real layout or text changes.

Plan locale and browser coverage
Locale, browser, viewport, and consent state are separate dimensions. Cover supported combinations intentionally instead of multiplying every possible choice by default.
- Locales: include supported language-region tags and verify fallback behavior where relevant.
- Browsers: use projects for the engines your product targets, such as Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit.
- Viewports: include desktop and mobile layouts if both are supported.
- Consent states: cover first visit, saved choice, or settings/reopen behavior when those states are in scope.
Playwright projects configure browser and other test combinations, while locale and device emulation are configurable per context. The appropriate matrix depends on your product’s supported locales and browser targets, not on a requirement to test every possible combination. See projects and emulation.

Troubleshoot common failures

Should I snapshot the whole page or just the banner?
Snapshot the banner for component layout and text wrapping; snapshot the page when overlay placement or its effect on surrounding content is part of the check.
