FFmpeg exit code 1 is a generic failure, not a diagnosis. The fix depends on the final FFmpeg error lines and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health message. First capture the full error, then determine whether FFmpeg failed to read the source, initialize the output, connect to YouTube, or deliver a stream YouTube can use. Without your command and logs, no single root cause can be identified.
Start with the actual error, not the exit code
A wrapper or service may report “FFmpeg exited with code 1,” but that status alone does not say what failed. FFmpeg’s command line contains inputs, options and outputs, and option placement matters: many options apply only to the next input or output. Use the final stderr lines and the full command to locate the failure stage. See FFmpeg’s command-line documentation.

- Record the exact environment. Note the Linode instance’s operating system and version, the FFmpeg version, the full command, when the process exits, and the complete stderr output around the failure.
- Keep diagnostic output visible. Avoid suppressing FFmpeg messages with a quiet log level while troubleshooting.
- Redact secrets before sharing logs. Remove the YouTube stream key and any other credentials from the command and output.
- Check option order. Inspect which options precede each
-iand output URL; input and output options can apply to different parts of the command.
Do not assume the key is wrong just because the output is YouTube. Establish from stderr whether FFmpeg can read the source, find the expected audio and video streams, initialize the codecs and output container, and connect to or write to the destination.

Check the selected YouTube event and stream key
If FFmpeg fails to start a third-party encoder stream, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends copying a new stream key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Confirm that the key and stream URL belong to the currently selected live event; an old key or a key associated with a different event can send you down the wrong diagnostic path. YouTube also advises confirming that the stream is receiving data and has valid CDN settings. Follow its live-stream troubleshooting steps.
YouTube’s Live API distinguishes stream states such as created, ready, active, inactive and error, as well as health states including good, ok, bad and noData. Those labels can help distinguish a stream that has not started from one that is active but unhealthy; they do not, by themselves, identify what in your FFmpeg command needs changing. Use YouTube’s health message to guide encoding changes
Read the Live Control Room message before changing codecs or bitrates at random. YouTube’s live encoder error guidance covers issues involving format and codecs, bitrate, audio and video settings, and keyframe frequency. It specifies H.264 video and AAC audio, and identifies possible problems such as unsupported container or codec settings, incorrect bitrate, unsuitable audio sample rate or channel count, missing or multiple audio/video streams, interlaced video, excessive frame rate, and keyframe frequency.

- Format or codec warning: Check the output container and codec settings against YouTube’s guidance; do not infer a codec failure from exit code 1 alone.
- Bitrate warning: Review the configured bitrate and change it only when the health message indicates a bitrate issue.
- Audio warning: Check whether the expected audio stream is present and review its sample rate and channel count.
- Video warning: Check for missing or multiple video streams, interlacing, or a frame rate YouTube flags.
- Keyframe warning: YouTube says to send keyframes every two seconds and relates frame rate to keyframe frequency. Check this setting when the health feedback points to it.
After a targeted change, check the health feedback again. YouTube’s error catalog describes possible ingest problems; it does not establish that any of them caused an unspecified FFmpeg exit.
Resolve RTMPS and connection errors
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Live Control Room may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default, so copy the RTMPS URL from the live-stream setup when using RTMPS, and confirm that your encoder supports that protocol. Check the URL against the active event and use its current stream key.
- SSL certificate or TLS error: Verify that both the protocol and server use
rtmps. YouTube suggests specifying port443if needed for SSL troubleshooting. - Connection timeout: Verify the URL and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS before changing encoding settings.
- Encoder looks healthy but YouTube does not: Check YouTube’s stream-health status and test outbound internet connectivity, as YouTube recommends.
Use YouTube’s current RTMPS streaming guidance for endpoint and protocol checks, and its troubleshooting guide for connection and encoder checks. Endpoint details can change, so rely on the URL shown in Live Control Room rather than a copied address from an old command.

Check the Linode instance without assuming it is the cause
The host may be involved, but the title and exit code alone do not establish a Linode network, resource or package problem. Check whether the source is reachable from the instance, whether the installed FFmpeg build is the one you expect, whether stderr points to resource pressure, and whether outbound connection attempts succeed. YouTube specifically recommends checking encoder CPU load and testing outbound connectivity when appropriate.
Linode’s guide shows Ubuntu installation with apt install ffmpeg and version verification with ffmpeg -version. Its displayed example, ffmpeg version 4.2.4-1ubuntu0.1, is an Ubuntu package built in 2020—not a current version recommendation. Available package versions vary by distribution and release. Troubleshooting by symptom

Until the command, stderr, operating system, FFmpeg build and YouTube health report are available, the specific cause and a command-level correction remain undetermined.
