For an interactive image-to-PDF download in Nuxt, run the conversion in the browser—not during server rendering. A safe workflow is to get the image bytes, render the image into a PDF with a PDF-generation library, then download the result. Keep browser-dependent imports behind a client-side boundary, and check image origin and size before relying on Canvas.
Choose where conversion should run
Nuxt uses universal rendering: code can run on the server before the page hydrates in the browser. The server does not provide browser APIs such as window, the DOM, or Canvas. Nuxt advises that a component importing a library that depends on browser APIs and has side effects should only be called client-side: Nuxt rendering guidance.

For a user clicking a button to download a PDF, keep the interactive conversion path client-side. If the application must generate documents on the server, design that as a separate server-route workflow and validate the chosen library against the deployment runtime, memory limits, input validation, and file handling requirements.

Choose the image source first
- User-selected file: Read the file in the browser, then pass its image data to the PDF library.
- Remote URL: The remote host must allow cross-origin access if you load the image into Canvas and read its contents. Otherwise, use an allowed server-side retrieval design or choose an image served from your own origin.
- App asset: Nuxt 4 serves files in
public/from stable public URLs; files in the assets directory are processed by the build tool. For a path known only at runtime, follow Nuxt’s public-asset guidance rather than assuming a build-time asset import will resolve dynamically: Nuxt assets documentation.
Build the client-side conversion flow
The general flow is independent of a particular PDF package: obtain the image data, place it on a PDF page, and trigger a download. The exact library API, version, page sizing, and import pattern must be checked in that library’s own current documentation. A current authoritative jsPDF API reference was not established here, so the example below deliberately specifies the Nuxt and browser boundary without inventing package-specific calls.

- Install and select a PDF-generation library. Check its official documentation for the version you install, its browser support, image input format, page sizing, and download API.
- Make the conversion component client-only. For example, put the interactive UI in
components/ImageToPdf.client.vue. The.client.vuesuffix makes the component client-only in Nuxt. - Read the image in the browser. For an uploaded file, use a browser file-reading approach supported by your chosen library. For remote images, verify CORS before attempting to read Canvas output.
- Lay out the image on the PDF page. Decide whether to preserve aspect ratio, fit or fill the page, add margins, rotate the page, or split content across multiple pages. These choices depend on the product requirement; there is no universal default.
- Download the generated document. Use the PDF library’s documented browser download mechanism and handle errors in the UI.
Keep browser-only imports out of server rendering
Do not access window, the DOM, or Canvas from setup code that can run during SSR. If a dependency performs browser work as soon as it is imported, import it only from the client-only component or after the browser interaction begins. A client-only boundary prevents server rendering from evaluating that browser-dependent workflow.
Handle remote images and Canvas security
Canvas content is readable only when it remains origin-clean. If a remote image is served without suitable CORS permission, drawing it to Canvas can taint the canvas and block attempts to read the result. See MDN’s CORS-enabled images guide. Setting an image element’s cross-origin mode in your code does not grant permission by itself; the remote server must send the appropriate response headers.

Manage memory for large images
HTMLCanvasElement.toDataURL() produces an encoded string containing the image. That can consume substantial memory for large images. MDN recommends considering toBlob() with URL.createObjectURL() as an alternative where appropriate: MDN Canvas toDataURL documentation. Confirm that your chosen PDF library can accept the resulting representation before changing the data path.
Choose a Nuxt-specific option only after checking its documentation
Nuxt’s module directory lists options that may be relevant, but a directory listing is a discovery aid rather than proof of current maintenance, compatibility, or suitability.

- @i2d/nuxt-pdf-frame is listed as Nuxt 3-compatible and supporting PDF and Canvas output, including multi-page support.
- @jasy/nuxt is listed as supporting PDF rendering in the browser or through a server route.
Before adopting either, verify its current package version, API, maintenance status, browser support, and whether its execution model fits your application. The module listings do not establish that one is categorically better.
Nuxt Image formats are not PDF conversion
Nuxt Image’s NuxtPicture configuration can select among webp, avif, jpeg, jpg, png, and gif; the first format supported by the browser in the configured order is used. That controls image delivery, not PDF generation. See Nuxt Picture documentation.

Troubleshoot common failures
- “window is not defined” or similar SSR errors: A browser-only API or dependency ran during server rendering. Move the conversion UI into a client-only component and defer browser-dependent work until the client.
- Canvas export is blocked or throws a security error: The image is cross-origin and the remote server has not permitted access. Serve the image from an allowed origin, configure CORS on the image server, or avoid reading it through Canvas.
- The PDF is blank or the image is missing: Check that the image has finished loading and decoded before passing its data to the PDF library. Verify that the input format is supported by that library and that the code path runs in the browser.
- Large images make the tab slow or run out of memory: Avoid unnecessarily duplicating large encoded strings. Consider a Blob-based path where the PDF library supports it, and test realistic image sizes on target devices.
- Images are cropped, stretched, or split unexpectedly: Explicitly calculate page dimensions, orientation, margins, and scaling behavior. Test portrait and landscape images and the required multi-page cases.
- An asset path works in development but not after deployment: Check whether the file belongs in Nuxt’s stable-URL
public/directory or the build-processed assets directory; do not assume runtime paths resolve like static imports.
