How to Fix FFmpeg Concat Errors When Combining Videos for YouTube Live

Learn how to diagnose FFmpeg concat errors, choose between stream copy and re-encoding, repair timestamp issues, and check YouTube Live ingest health.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First determine whether FFmpeg failed to join the files or whether it created a local output that YouTube later rejects. For compatible clips, use the concat demuxer with stream copy. If streams, time bases, or required output settings differ, normalize and re-encode with the concat filter. Then validate YouTube’s ingest settings and stream-health diagnostics separately.

Identify which part of the workflow failed

A concat error, a bad transition in the resulting file, and a YouTube ingest warning are different problems. Save the first meaningful FFmpeg error line, then check whether an output file was created and whether it plays through the join. If the local file is sound but the live stream has an ingest warning or buffering, investigate the YouTube encoder configuration and stream health rather than changing the concat command blindly.

Inspect every input before choosing a concat method

Use ffprobe to inspect each clip. This is a practical diagnostic step; it does not assume any particular cause or that these commands have been tested against your files.

ffprobe -hide_banner -i clip1.mp4
ffprobe -hide_banner -i clip2.mp4

Compare the stream count and order, codecs and profiles, time bases, resolution, frame rate, pixel format, audio codec, sample rate, channel layout, and reported duration. The concat demuxer expects the same streams, codecs, and time bases; if those differ, or if you need to change resolution, frame rate, or audio layout, use a filter-and-encode workflow instead. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Choose the concat method that matches the files

Method Best fit Important limitation
Concat demuxer Compatible inputs when you want packet-level joining and stream copy without re-encoding. Inputs must have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Bad duration metadata or unequal stream lengths can cause gaps or artifacts.
Concat filter Inputs that need normalization or re-encoding, such as differing resolutions or other incompatible parameters. Segments must start at timestamp zero; corresponding streams need compatible parameters. Different frame rates can result in variable-frame-rate output unless normalized.
Concat protocol Limited cases where the container supports raw file-level concatenation. It is not a general-purpose way to join MP4 files.

FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the filter approach “if you need to re-encode.” Read the FFmpeg concatenation FAQ before relying on file-level concatenation for a particular container.

Join compatible clips with the concat demuxer

1. Create a concat list

Make a plain UTF-8 text file such as list.ffconcat. For automatic format detection, the header must be the exact first line, with no byte-order mark or leading whitespace.

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'part1.mp4'
file 'part2.mp4'

Use relative paths where possible. Paths containing spaces or special characters must be quoted or escaped according to FFmpeg’s concat script syntax.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Run stream copy

ffmpeg -f concat -i list.ffconcat -c copy output.mp4

This avoids re-encoding, but it cannot repair incompatible streams. The demuxer uses safe relative paths by default. The -safe 0 option permits arbitrary names and protocols; use it only when you trust the list and every referenced path. Prefer the default safe mode when it works.

3. Check the result at each join

Play the output across every transition and check for a pause, repeated or missing frames, an audio gap, or audio-video drift. If the join is wrong despite a successful command, investigate durations and timestamps before assuming the codec is the cause.

Normalize mismatched clips with the concat filter

The filter route is appropriate when inputs need re-encoding or when you must normalize properties such as resolution. Each segment must start at timestamp zero. The filter can select common pixel and sample formats, but settings such as resolution still need explicit conversion. Different input frame rates can yield variable-frame-rate output, so choose and apply a frame rate suitable for your delivery workflow.

The following is an illustrative video-only skeleton for two inputs, not a universal command. Adapt dimensions, frame rate, codecs, and stream mapping to the actual files:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ffmpeg -i part1.mp4 -i part2.mp4
  -filter_complex "[0:v]scale=1920:1080,fps=30,setpts=PTS-STARTPTS[v0];[1:v]scale=1920:1080,fps=30,setpts=PTS-STARTPTS[v1];[v0][v1]concat=n=2:v=1:a=0[v]"
  -map "[v]" -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p output.mp4

This example discards audio. If your clips contain audio, inspect its format and duration, then include corresponding audio streams in a synchronized concat operation or normalize or mix audio separately based on an explicit editing decision. A video-only graph is not a general audio-video solution. FFmpeg notes that audio and video durations that do not exactly match can cause desynchronization at a stitch. See the concat filter reference.

Fix timestamp, duration, and transition artifacts

Demuxer joins: check duration metadata and stream lengths

The concat demuxer resets the first input to timestamp zero and schedules later files from the preceding file’s end. It adjusts timestamps globally; if audio and video streams have different lengths, that can leave gaps. Incorrect duration metadata or a truncated file can place the next segment at the wrong time. The concat list supports duration directives to override inaccurate or unavailable duration information. Confirm the actual duration before overriding it rather than guessing.

Filter joins: reset timestamps and keep streams aligned

The filter expects each segment to begin at timestamp zero. setpts=PTS-STARTPTS is commonly used to reset video timestamps in a graph; audio may need its own timestamp handling. Ensure related audio and video streams are joined in a synchronized operation when that is the intended result, and inspect the output around every cut.

Validate the local file, then check YouTube Live

A clean local output does not prove that YouTube will accept the live encoder’s settings. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate, so use the current row for your intended output in YouTube’s live encoder settings rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protocol matters: YouTube’s comparison says RTMP/RTMPS suits normal, low, or ultra-low latency, while HLS and DASH allow additional codec choices and generally have more latency. Do not assume an FFmpeg FLV/RTMP setup is interchangeable with an HLS or DASH workflow. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the protocol you use.

Once the stream is running, use YouTube’s Live stream health diagnostics to distinguish ingest faults from file assembly problems. Its issue labels include unsupported video codec, unsupported audio codec, missing audio or video, open GOP, and video starvation, which may cause buffering. For an open-GOP warning, YouTube’s documentation directs creators to configure a closed group of pictures. See the YouTube Live Streaming API configuration issue documentation.

Common symptoms and fixes

Symptom Likely area to inspect Next step
FFmpeg reports incompatible streams, codecs, or time bases Concat demuxer compatibility Compare the ffprobe output. If parameters differ, normalize and re-encode with the concat filter.
Output has a gap, repeated material, or a broken transition Duration metadata, truncated input, or timestamp alignment Check reported and actual durations, inspect streams with unequal lengths, and review timestamps around the join.
Audio and video drift after a join Different stream durations or missing timestamp normalization Use a synchronized audio-video filter operation or handle audio timestamps explicitly, then inspect the join.
YouTube reports unsupported codec or missing audio/video Live encoder output, not necessarily concat Check stream mapping and the chosen protocol’s current YouTube encoder settings.
YouTube reports open GOP Encoder GOP configuration Configure a closed GOP and check the live stream-health status again.
YouTube reports video starvation or viewers see buffering Live video delivery or ingest Check stream health and encoder delivery; a locally playable joined file alone does not establish a healthy live input.

If these steps do not resolve it, retain the exact FFmpeg command, the first meaningful error line, the FFmpeg version/build, and the relevant ffprobe stream details for every input. Those details are needed to distinguish a specific failure from a general compatibility issue.
