To turn portrait video into a landscape YouTube stream, either crop the image and accept that some of it will be cut off, or preserve the full picture inside a 16:9 frame and fill the empty sides. For most portrait clips, a centered portrait video over a blurred, enlarged copy of itself is a practical compromise: it keeps the full original visible while filling the landscape frame. Do not stretch the portrait image to fill the screen; it distorts the subject.
Choose how the portrait video should fit
A 9:16 portrait image and a 16:9 landscape frame have different shapes. There is no lossless way to make the portrait image cover the entire landscape frame without changing its proportions. Choose the layout according to what viewers need to see.

| Layout | What viewers see | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Crop to fill | An enlarged image covering the landscape frame | Some of the original image is cut off. Reposition it to keep the subject visible. |
| Fit with side fill | The complete portrait image, with designed elements or another background filling the sides | The side treatment becomes part of the composition; the portrait image itself does not fill the width. |
| Portrait over blurred duplicate | The complete portrait image in front of a blurred, enlarged copy filling the landscape background | The background is intentionally soft and secondary; check that it does not compete with the foreground. |
| Stretch | The portrait image widened or otherwise distorted to fill the frame | People and objects lose their natural proportions. OBS says stretching is rarely advisable. |
For 24/7 playback of existing portrait clips, the blurred-duplicate layout is often a useful starting point. StreamNeo documents it as one possible portrait-in-landscape treatment in its guide to looping vertical video; that is vendor guidance, not independent testing.
Make a landscape composition in OBS
OBS’s Aspect Ratio Guide, published November 27, 2021, gives 1920×1080 and 1280×720 as examples of 16:9 output. Choose the canvas size that matches your intended stream output and the footage you have. OBS recommends producing content at a 16:9 resolution such as those examples; they are technical resolution examples, not audience statistics.

- Extensive Connectivity & USB Hub: Seamlessly connect your laptop, desktop, and storage devices with DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI-D, and Mini DP ports plus integrated USB hub for a clutter-free desk setup
- Set the landscape canvas. In OBS, open Settings > Video. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to your chosen 16:9 frame, such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to the resolution you intend to stream, if different.
- Add the portrait clip. In the scene’s Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source, then choose the video file. Keep the source proportions intact when resizing it; do not drag it wider to cover the canvas.
- For a crop-to-fill frame, enlarge and reposition. Select the source and scale it past the canvas edges until the image covers the full 16:9 area. Move it to keep the important subject in view. OBS supports precise cropping through Edit Transform (Ctrl+E) and cropping by holding Alt while dragging the red transform handles. Cropping removes image content; inspect the top, bottom, and sides, not just the center.
- For a blurred-side hybrid, duplicate the source. Put one copy behind the other. Enlarge the lower copy until it covers the canvas, then apply a blur effect and keep it behind the foreground copy. Keep the foreground copy at a size that preserves the entire portrait frame. If you prefer a designed fill, use a background image, graphics, or other content instead of the enlarged duplicate.
- Preview the whole clip. Watch the complete clip or representative sections with movement and captions. Check faces, hands, text, and any product details at the edges before settling on a crop or foreground size.
- Check the scene at stream size. Confirm the subject and any text remain legible in the landscape preview. If you plan to offer a vertical version too, test that composition separately rather than assuming the landscape layout will work when cropped.
OBS’s guidance is explicit: “Stretching is probably the least preferable way to make content fit, and is rarely advisable.” Its separate instruction for best results recommends producing content at a 16:9 resolution such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720. See the OBS Project Aspect Ratio Guide for its explanation of scaling and cropping.
Choose the YouTube viewing format before going live
YouTube’s Live Control Room can support simultaneous horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16) formats. YouTube says the vertical feed is a center crop by default and provides the layout options Center crop, Fit to phone width, and Stacked; zoom and position can also be adjusted. These are YouTube’s layout choices, not substitutes for checking how your own footage is framed.

- CARE FOR YOUR EYES DAY and NIGHT: An ambient light sensor on the monitor detects lighting in your workstation and automatically adjusts brightness; Eye Saver Mode minimizes excessive blue light, and Flicker Free relieves eye strain
- SEE CONTENT SMOOTHER, EVEN GAMING: A faster than average refresh rate updates the image on screen more often every second; 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur when playing games, watching videos, or working on design projects
- STAY IN SYNC WITH THE ACTION: AMD Radeon FreeSync keeps the refresh rate of your monitor and graphics card in sync to reduce image tearing for a superfluid entertainment experience; Watch movies and play games without interruptions
- Horizontal only: Build and review the 16:9 composition for desktop, television, and landscape viewing.
- Vertical and horizontal: Decide on the dual-format setup before starting. For a third-party encoder, YouTube describes selecting Encoder in the vertical preview, using RTMP(S), and selecting a second stream key for the vertical stream. Send each format to its matching stream key.
- Do not add the vertical format after starting: YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added once the stream has started, so make that choice in advance.
When both formats are active, YouTube says vertical streams can appear in the mobile Shorts browsing experience, while other viewers see the horizontal version; the stream uses one URL and live chat. This is an available discovery surface, not a promise of traffic. Check YouTube’s current live streaming guidance and the Live Control Room, since interface wording and availability can change.
Test the stream before leaving it running
- Make a short unlisted test stream and inspect the public playback on a phone and a desktop.
- Check that the crop keeps essential content visible and that the chosen side fill looks intentional on both screens.
- Watch the transition from the end of the clip back to its beginning. Look for a black frame, abrupt audio cut, or distracting jump.
- Confirm the stream is healthy before relying on it for unattended 24/7 playback.
For a stream that plays uploaded video rather than a live camera feed, YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules still matter. Use footage and audio you have rights to use, and review YouTube’s policies for reused content before building a long-running channel around repeated clips.

Troubleshoot common framing problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Faces, captions, or details are missing | The source is enlarged beyond the canvas, so the crop cuts off content. | Reposition the source, reduce the crop, or switch to a fit or blurred-duplicate layout. |
| People or objects look unnaturally wide | The portrait source has been stretched. | Restore its proportions and fill the unused sides with a background or a blurred duplicate. |
| The sides are empty or black | The portrait image fits inside the 16:9 canvas without a background layer. | Add designed side content or an enlarged, blurred copy behind the portrait source. |
| The image is soft or details are hard to read | The source is being enlarged substantially, or the foreground is too small in the hybrid layout. | Use the original-resolution clip where possible, adjust the crop or foreground size, and review the result at the intended stream size. |
| The vertical version frames the subject poorly | The vertical feed’s center crop or selected layout does not match the subject’s position. | Choose the appropriate YouTube vertical layout and adjust its zoom and position before going live. |
| The loop starts with a visible jump or blank frame | The end and beginning of the clip do not join cleanly. | Review the loop transition in an unlisted test and revise the edit or playlist order before leaving it unattended. |
